It was going to happen eventually, just as it has pretty much everywhere else by now. Probably could have staved it off for another decade or so if the Joe Biden* shitshow never happened.

I wonder how that's going to change shopping now?

I know they'd all love to go cashless. I know the idiot kids growing up will love to go cashless and get implants in their hands so they don't have to even carry credit cards anymore, but they'd better not try making us old dogs do that.

I know they can't just straight up get rid of "cents" in their pricing. Almost universally now, at any chain businesses at least, there's a whole shit-ton of information in their databases that can be gleaned just by looking at the numbers after the decimal. Something that costs $19.99 is different than something that costs $19.98. This could be that the .98 is on clearance, or it was a seasonal item, or whatever other variables they have programmed in their database.

I can't see that ever going away just because of the logistics involved.

So let me guess...

If you're paying with cash, you're the one who gets fucked now because they're just going to round up every purchase to the nearest 5 cents (for now), and probably pretty quickly now we'll be ditching coins altogether and we'll just be stuck rounding up to the nearest dollar.

I bet they won't even do a 0-49/50-99 split like the IRS does on our taxes too. If we go a single penny over a dollar after taxes, we're going to pay that company an additional .99 cents tax for our purchase.

Fuckers.

Thinking more about it, the Government isn't going to allow the businesses to even get a cut of that additional tax revenue.

All the additional revenue made because change doesn't exist anymore will be figured in after taxes, and it will all go directly to the government.

There's really only one way to "fix" this issue. And I actually think the likelihood that they do it is actually fairly high as long as people make a big fuss when it starts becoming an issue.

You simply give a credit back to people every year for this. And it's better if they do this automatically rather than tying it to income taxes like most other stuff because seniors should not be expected to start filing a full tax form every year just to get this credit.

Make it a couple of hundred bucks or something. Get the "minds" together to come up with a number everyone can agree is a fair credit.

Oh... wait....

Ah... shit.

No... That's not going to work. You can't give that credit to everyone. All the people paying with credit cards and/or phone apps are already getting their exact change back when they buy something. And how the hell would you ever be able to disprove their claims that they also bought a lot of stuff with cash too? Impossible.

Your only option left is one that they'd be most happy to do then. Make people who buy stuff with cash save up all of their receipts and send them in at the end of the year for the credit.

Perfect! Get congress to pass that and make it law immediately! We'll put those 87,000 new IRS Agents to work after all!

And then laugh 20 years from now when you see that they've never actually had to return a single penny of that money because saving up your receipts for everything you bought all year and sending them to Uncle Sam to pour over kinda defeats the whole fucking purpose now, dunnit?

Losing the penny really doesn't change anything. Canada got ride of the penny almost 20 years ago and outside of a little rounding up. Nothing.

Besides it costs more to make a penny than to have one circulating.

That's what happens those Asian Latin American currency next is cents of 10 or next is dimes is worth 10 cents, a quarter is worth 25 cents....1 Dollar 90 is rounded up to about 2 Bucks then 1 Dollar 75 is rounded to 2 next 1 Dollar 50 cents becomes 2 Dollars
