does Rap even qualify as 'Music'

its 'Art' so subjective, not everyone will have the same answer, people will have different opinions, for example the Berklee Jazz-o-phile Neely seems to like Rap

I just found out about this game made for the old Nintendo that came out around 9 years ago. If you're a Tetris fan, worth a play.

Wouldn't be mentioning it if it weren't for one of the songs though...

(Starts at 38 seconds)

What a banger. Only a few true artists/coding whizzes back in the heyday were capable of making that old piece of gaming tech sound that good.

ETA:

I'm listening to it now, for the first time with decent headphones. I think a big part of this song's greatness is what you probably don't even consciously realize you're listening to while hearing all the high level stuff. The bass they got out of that chip is just great.

And it seems to be doing this thing where it's going much lower than I would expect it to. There doesn't seem to be a regular flow up and down to it like I would normally expect. Every time I hear it again I just keep thinking at any point in time that base could and even should go up next note, but it never does. It just keeps going down, down, down, down twice as far as you thought it would, and at one point of the loop even 4 times lower than you thought it would, only for the next part of the song to come up and it's all the way back at the top ready to fall down again like the next puzzle piece you need to place. (And I wonder if this wasn't co-incidence since this is a Tetris type game).

You hardly even notice it happening because unlike your usual pretty short music loops for songs of this age, this loop is at least 1 1/2 minutes long before it starts over, and the next time that bass magically starts back up at the very top it's in a completely different mode and beat than it was the last time it fell down.

This earworm has been in my head for about a week and I still don't mind.

I'm wrong.

There appears to be one single part in the entire loop where the bass actually goes up a note. It's brief (and I have no musical training at all so I'll just say it sounds like a quarter note and hope that gets the point across).

Not sure how long the loop is or when the next time or previous time it happens is, but it happens right at 6:19 for sure. I noticed it a few loops back but couldn't pinpoint it right away. So interesting. I wonder why they broke the pattern just that one time in the loop.

I wonder if that kind of stuff is as interesting to us on a subconscious level as we listen to music and not really ever give it any thought as my conscious mind finds this to be right now.

Who knows? Maybe if not for that single higher bass note at 6:19 in the loop, I wouldn't think the song is half as great as I do right now?

Math is so interesting. Wish I actually learned music growing up instead of playing so many videogames and the other mindless crap we got up to as kids.

The loop appears to only be 51 seconds. The song has so much going for it I thought it was nearly twice that length. I wasn't able to suss that out at all until I found that note and made it my anchor for the song.

ha! glad you enjoy that stuff, I don't really like old game music at times as sometimes I feel its too 8-bit or 16-bit but then somewhere in the 90s and 2000s the sampling got really good and it became difficult to tell the real instruments from fake electronic sounds, I also admire what composers did with such limited tech. Key changes or modulation is cool, sometimes there is a long chord progression or a final cadence but game stuff usual is supposed to catch you like a commerical advert jingle while at the same time putting you in the zone hypnotic. Sometimes they use tricks, different rhythm and melody, call and response, the canon, or one Low line plays something and the high voice plays something else and eventual it add ups. They can have unsual phrases like those ambient techno songs that almost follow Classical music with unconventional structure instead of your 8 bars, 12 bar blues or 16 bars its not 4 bars of music its something else

1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 5 and 6

a melody based on that can eventually meet with another line based on 8s

1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and five and six and seven and eight

you can repeat the 6s and 8s and eventual they line up

6 + 6 + 6 + 6 = 24
8 + 8 + 8 = 24

then throw in funk chord vamp and a poly rhythm and the listener really gets bamboozled

old style music is back now as people want the old-school 80s and early 90s sound trying to recreate a certain style

its amazing what they did with such limited tech

a 'quarter note' would be interesting, are you sure? I'm not sure but maybe that would be 'microtonal' something you do on synth but more tricky in the real world
a whole tone is A to B or C D E ...Do Re Mi are 'whole tones' the half tone is using the black keys,a mix of white and black on piano for 'simplification' they call it chromatic, it would be the single jump of frets on your guitar or bass that is a 'half tone'...a simplification on quarter tones would be bending a note on guitar, or the cracks between the keys on piano, which you can access on keyboard with one of those pitch bending wheels

I might have a listen later

Western Music used to be microtonal, the Pythagorean Greek, early Baroque the Harmomic series that some Choir or Barbershop quartet use as they tune by ear

but then Western music tried to fix the math of it all, the harmony became a mathematics thing to be solved so everything was put slightly out of tune but mathematically perfect so all instruments in the Orchestra would pit into this Western European 'Perfect Harmony'

what is tone and pitch and what is your 'A' note truly? its a massive rabbit hole if you ever go down it

'Sevish' is pretty out there with the pushing the envelope of 'Alien Sound' the Droplet 53-tone microtonal music

You take the Root and Octave and instead of diving it up to 12 notes or 5 Blues pentatonic or 7 Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti...and high Octave do' they divide it into 53 parts

the chords are very weird

Some Arab, Jew, religion Hindu Indian, Chinese cultures still do this microtone stuff
