Trump’s Republican Party is dead.

Not only in its soul, but in the essential qualities that once defined it. While it may still win seats in the Midterms and retain the loyalty of millions, what truly matters has been lost.

The capacity for independent judgment, for institutional self-respect, for the basic reflex of saying ‘No, not this’, is gone.

Donald Trump’s Easter Sunday post, in which he threatened to bomb Iranian power plants, dropped the f-word into the public record, and signed off with ‘Praise be to Allah’, is not an opportunity to wake up Republican Party officials, members and voters.

It is simply more evidence that they may be breathing, but in reality they’re dead inside.

We have been here so many times before that Trump reaction commentary has become its own genre, with its own predictable arc. Something happens. Jaws drop. A Republican or two issue carefully worded statements expressing concern. The news cycle moves on. Nothing changes.

The ‘Grab ’em by the pussy’ Access Hollywood tape, which arguably kicked all this off, feels like a lifetime ago.

Then we had a wave of ‘very fine people on both sides’, of children torn from their parents and put in cages, Russian interference and his references to Haiti and African nations as shithole countries leading to his first impeachment.

Not to mention the second impeachment, attempts to overturn an election, and facing 34 felony counts.

There has always been a fresh wave asking whether this, finally, is the moment that takes him down. It never is.

Yesterday was no exception.

At some point, we need to stop asking where the accountability is and consider why there is none.

The answer is not flattering.

What we’re witnessing now is true compliant devotion and the collapse of any structure in which resistance might be possible.

Tim Scott, the only Black Republican in the Senate, called a racist video depicting the Obamas as apes ‘the most racist thing I’ve seen out of this White House’ and then carried on as normal.

When the line is crossed and then simply redrawn further back, eventually, there is nowhere left to go.

Trump’s Easter post is a useful illustration precisely because of its particular combination of ingredients.

Profanity from a sitting president, directed at a foreign government, on the holiest morning of the Christian calendar, ending with an invocation of Allah.

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to suggest that any one of those elements, if attributed to a Democrat, would have prompted weeks of hearings and a hymn of outrage from every evangelical pastor with a television slot.

But when it comes from Trump, it generates a shrug and, from his more devoted supporters, unapologetic delight.

The real, harder question is how a party can lose its soul and yet remain electorally successful, and what that means for America.

Trump’s Republicans will be on the ballot in November, and many of them will likely still win. In a damning insight into the soul of America, the moral decay and decomposition of Trump’s administration are not translating into disaster for the party.

American democracy does not yet have a mechanism for automatically disqualifying the morally bankrupt and broken.

So the issue that needs to be grappled with is not really whether the Republican Party is dead. It is whether America wants to revive it – and if so, how it would be done, and who would do the work.

It’s an issue that belongs, uncomfortably, to the Democrats, as much as anyone.

There is a version of the next few years in which the party simply runs out the clock, waits for the exhaustion to set in, and inherits whatever is left. That is a strategy of sorts, but it’s not a vision.

They need to be presented with something worth voting for, rather than simply something to vote against.

That is the reality of the situation for the Democrats – and it’s a reality that’s a lot harder and less satisfying for them than they would like.

So their task will not be to blame everything on the monstrosity of Trump, though monstrous he undoubtedly is. It is to prove that the Republic is recoverable, that institutions can be rebuilt, that the extraordinary can be made ordinary again – in the right direction this time.

Trump signed off his Easter message with ‘Praise be to Allah’.

The Republican Party was ineffectual, and thereby complicit, in its response. It’s what we’ve come to expect, and what we should expect going forward too.

We have established, beyond any remaining doubt, that there is nothing he could say or do that would change that.

For a long time now, America has been at risk of losing itself, facing a fundamental battle for the soul of its country.

We have now reached the natural conclusion of that battle.

The Republican Party – once the party of giants Abraham Lincoln, Ronald Reagan and John McCain – is not sleeping. It is not lost.

It is dead. And in the void where its soul used to be now stands something deeper and darker: an aggressive, erratic, vengeful movement that is isolationist in its instincts, authoritarian in its appetites, and answerable to no one but the man at the top.

Americans must now decide. They can either take the necessary steps to bury the Republican Party as it stands, or do nothing, and accept that what has replaced it is all they have left.

"A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again."

Not going to be a problem if we ever do get the war crimes trial that all of this deserves. A statement of motive and intent is completely clear.

I don’t need to say how vile it is. It is shocking, although at some level, if you didn’t see this as a real possibility, then you weren’t paying attention. Not much to say here except to talk about how those of us who are not Donald Trump should behave.

First of all, any military commander given orders to start destroying civilian infrastructure in Iran should disobey that order, should say it, should not even quietly resign. This is a time to stand up and make it clear that this is totally unacceptable. This is a violation of everything that the military stands for. It’s a violation of everything that America stands for.

Second, any member of the Trump administration: to continue in your position doing your job as Trump takes America on the course of becoming a criminal nation, a criminal terrorist nation, you cannot continue in good conscience.

Particularly, if you play any role in making this happen, then you are a war criminal too. Then you ought to be brought up someday before an international tribunal. But even if you’re in a peripheral role, even just putting your head down and saying, well, I’m an assistant secretary at the agriculture department or something like that, that’s not good enough. This is not a regime that you can serve in good conscience.

Republican politicians, any Republican, I mean, there are people already saying, “oh, you know, I don’t approve of destroying civilizations, but” — that “but” makes you an accessory to the crime, if you are failing to stand up against it.

And I really don’t like this notion that only Democrats have agency. This is a very common thing. All of this is made possible by the lockstep slavish obedience of Republicans. Nonetheless, Democrats have a role here, too. And this is not a time to attack Trump’s war because it costs too much money or to attack it because it’s bad for energy markets or raises the price of groceries. I mean, it does do all of that. All of that is true. But we’re way past that point now. We’re at the point where you need to unambiguously condemn the immorality and criminality of what’s going on. No mincing of words.

Damned if I know what’s going to happen. I mean, at some level, I think that the civilization that may be destroyed tonight is our own. I mean, are we civilized if we do this kind of thing? If America as a nation doesn’t stand up against this, what are we?

So, God help us. Normal life will continue. It’s going to be a really weird thing to be out there, you know, grocery shopping and taking the subway and all of those things. But this is, in a way, the defining moment. The fate of the whole American idea is on the line.

I have no idea how this ends.

What President Trump is describing as the destruction of ‘a whole civilization’ would be a war crime, plain and simple.

President Donald Trump threatened to commit genocide in Iran, ahead of warnings of a wave of attacks on civilian infrastructure on Tuesday night. “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again,” he wrote on Truth Social on Tuesday. This followed a drumbeat of similar threats of wanton and criminal destruction. “The entire country could be taken out in one night. And that night might be tomorrow night,” he said on Monday, having recently warned he would bomb Iran “back to the Stone Ages.”

“President Trump has repeatedly threatened war crimes in Iran and now he is expressing genocidal intent,” said Sarah Harrison, an associate general counsel at the Pentagon’s Office of General Counsel, International Affairs during Trump’s first term. “Every single lawmaker and national security leader needs to stand against this and make clear to the U.S. military that these are unlawful orders and if carried out they will someday face criminal prosecution.”

This interpretation was echoed by Rebecca Ingber, a former State Department lawyer and now a law professor at Cardozo Law School. “The U.S. understanding of the definition of genocide in the Genocide Convention requires a ‘specific intent’ to destroy a group — such as a national or ethnic group as relevant here,” she told The Intercept. “That is an intentionally high bar, and one that explicitly would not cover unintended consequences of armed conflict. If acted upon, the President’s statement would be evidence of that required specific intent.”

Trump has repeatedly threatened to obliterate Iran’s civilian infrastructure should the nation’s leaders not heed his demands. “We have a plan because of the power of our military where every bridge in Iran will be decimated by 12:00 tomorrow night,” he said on Monday. “Where every power plant in Iran will be out of business, burning, exploding, and never to be used again.” This echoed an Easter morning missive. “Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran. There will be nothing like it!!!” Trump ranted on Truth Social. “Open the Fuckin’ Strait [of Hormuz], you crazy bastards, or you’ll be living in Hell.”

Asked on Monday if he was concerned that his threat to bomb power plants or bridges amounts to war crimes, Trump replied “No, not at all,” and said in another interview, “I’m not worried about it.”

“There is no gray area on this under international law.”

“What President Trump is describing as the destruction of ‘a whole civilization’ would be a war crime, plain and simple,” said Sarah Yager, the Washington director at Human Rights Watch and a former senior adviser on human rights to the chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff. “There is no gray area on this under international law.”

Civilian infrastructure has been a frequent target since the U.S.–Israeli war on Iran began on February 28. “Strikes on critical infrastructure and industrial sites have disrupted basic services including electricity, water and telecommunications, also leading to increasing immediate and longer term environmental and health risks,” wrote the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, or OCHA, in a brief report issued last week. Airports, cultural heritage locations, hospitals, industrial sites markets, residential areas, and schools have also been struck, including the civilian international airport in Tehran, a power plant in Khorramshahr, and water reservoirs in Fars and Khuzestan. Last week, the U.S. attacked the newly constructed B1 highway bridge, which killed 8 people, who were, according to the deputy governor of Alborz province, not military targets but nearby villagers celebrating Nowruz, the Persian new year.

The International Atomic Energy Agency has confirmed strikes affected multiple nuclear sites, including Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant. Rafael Grossi, head of the nuclear watchdog, warned on Monday that “continued military activity near the BNPP — an operating plant with large amounts of nuclear fuel — could cause a severe radiological accident with harmful consequences for people and the environment in Iran and beyond.”

Trump claimed that the Iranian people actually want the United States to attack their civilian infrastructure, citing “numerous intercepts” of communications. “‘Please keep bombing,’” Trump said on Monday of these supposed pleas. “And these are people that are living where the bombs are exploding. And when we leave, and we’re not hitting those areas, they’re saying, ‘Please come back.’”

In actuality, Iranians have been fleeing from Tehran and other major urban areas under attack. Almost a month ago, UNHCR — the U.N. refugee agency — reported that as many as 3.2 million people were already displaced inside Iran due to the conflict. While casualty counts are fragmentary, more than 2,100 civilians had been killed in the war by the end of last month and around 28,000 injured, according to Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education. This included 216 children killed and 1,881 injured, as of April 3.

Yager noted that Iranians who have already suffered severe government repression, including the mass killings of protesters earlier this year, now face obliteration by America. “They’re being told their entire society could be destroyed by the president of United States, with the power of the U.S. military at his fingertips. His previous threats to bomb their power plants and bridges are threats to the systems that keep people alive, their electricity, water, and health care,” she told The Intercept. “Even before anything happens, that kind of rhetoric creates deep anxiety and fear for millions of civilians who have no control over these decisions but who will bear the consequences.”

In an eleventh-hour announcement on Tuesday night, Donald J. Trump gave himself a two-week deadline to come up with a new distraction from the Epstein files.

Hegseth Accidentally Reveals Big Hole in Trump Victory Claim

Now that Donald Trump has backed off his threat to obliterate a nation of 93 million people, his propagandists are already retconning it into proof of his Solomon-like foresight and wisdom. The new spin is that the war with Iran temporarily ended in a ceasefire precisely because he made this threat, forcing Iran to renegotiate on more favorable terms.

“Iran ultimately understood—their ability to produce, to generate power, to fuel their terrorist regime—was in our hands,” Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth told reporters Wednesday, in response to questions about Trump’s threat. Hegseth insisted Trump’s vow to eradicate “a whole civilization” persuaded Iran that he could crush their ability to “export energy” and thus end the entire basis for the regime’s existence.

“That type of threat is what brought them to the place where they effectively said, ‘We want to cut this deal,’” Hegseth continued. This talking point has gone out widely: GOP Representative Mike Lawler of New York, a top target of Democrats, suggested that due to Trump’s “extreme rhetoric,” the Iranians “understand for once that they need to actually negotiate.”

But there’s a small problem with this spin. It’s that the Iranians were already negotiating with Trump before the war started. Trump largely sabotaged those negotiations, because he was talked into believing the war would be easy and deliver a quick burst of glory. Trump’s approach to the talks made success impossible—deliberately.

As The New York Times’ magnum opus on this reveals, Trump had decided to take the plunge (all that remained uncertain was the timing) weeks before those talks with Iran hit their critical phase. This was partly because Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu talked Trump into believing the risks of war were manageable—that strikes could render the Iranian regime too debilitated to close the Strait of Hormuz (which proved disastrously wrong). U.S. intelligence officials disputed Israeli confidence about all this, the Times reports, but Trump brushed off these warnings—because he “appeared to think it would be a very quick war.”

The prewar talks with Iran were doomed because Trump shifted between objectives in a way that ensured that outcome. The core issue was supposed to be ending Iran’s capacity to develop a nuke. But the Times also reveals that Iran was prepared to make meaningful concessions on that front, yet Trump officials effectively decided only regime change was acceptable, ensuring war.

For Hegseth’s story to be true, Iran would have to be more willing to give Trump the concessions he wants than before, due to his mighty threats. But, while the war did badly degrade the Iranian military and kill many senior leaders, here’s what else we know: The regime is still there in more radicalized and brutal form. The strait is being reopened, but as Ben Rhodes notes, the regime’s control over it now appears tighter. The fate of Iran’s nuclear material remains as indeterminate as ever.

Will talks now get Trump a better deal than he might have gotten the first time? Maybe, but Iran seems emboldened by its survival to demand more this time. The points that Trump accepted as the basis for talks appear more friendly to Iran than before.

“Iran is at the table because Trump now appears willing to base negotiations on a wider range of Iranian demands,” Sina Toossi, senior fellow at the Center for International Policy, told me. He cites Trump’s apparent willingness to entertain total relief from U.S. sanctions, continued control over the strait, and some form of uranium enrichment: “The civilizational threat did not factor into the ceasefire.”

So what did Trump’s threat—which would have been a massive war crime—actually accomplish? It’s exclusively negative. As Bill Kristol writes:

Trump’s war has further shaken any confidence our allies might still have in us. It will be seen as confirmation that Trump’s United States of America has become just another rogue nation in the international arena, if a less disciplined and cunning one than Putin’s Russia or Xi’s China.

Kristol is referring to the overall war’s impact, but Trump’s threat of civilizational erasure is also a factor in ensuring these outcomes. That the American president eagerly vowed to obliterate a nation of 93 million is bad enough. On top of that, the U.S. political system appeared utterly powerless to stop it—largely because one of our major parties revealed that it will not step up even when its leader threatens unthinkably massive war crimes and even genocide.

Brian Beutler points out that Republicans who wouldn’t challenge Trump’s maniacal designs got lucky that he blinked. Next time, they might not be so lucky—and neither might we. Indeed, it’s also worth asking what sort of dispiriting toll this glimpse of our profound powerlessness in the face of Trump’s madness will take on the millions of Americans who find the idea of their country threatening such wanton, indiscriminate destruction extremely troubling, which surely includes a lot of ordinary Republicans.

One can hope that this galvanizes millions into voting against the GOP in the midterms—and it probably will help—but translating this into serious checks against a rerun of this insanity is a tall order. That, too, is a painful realization to endure.

In a sense, Hegseth’s spin is doing us a public service. By insisting Trump’s threat drove Iran to the table, it should force a reassessment of why the original talks fell apart, why we went to war in the first place, and what Trump’s vicious, sadistic bluster actually accomplished. This is a story of failure all around, and the threats, too, accomplished only bad things. Which reveals another layer to this catastrophe, blowing another hole in Trump’s claim of victory.

That’s because the core story that Trump and Hegseth have told about this war is that it’s showcasing that American strength and power are supreme, unquestioned, and can accomplish literally anything. That includes the mere threat to unleash that power: Because the specter of American military violence and terror can make literally anyone do anything that Trump wills, maximal threats of annihilation are inherently good. Hegseth constantly preens about America’s superlative killing power with unnerving relish and bloodlust in order to tell that story.

But it’s taken a big hit. Yes, the war showcased awesome technological prowess. But that cannot accomplish literally anything Trump wants it to. Nor can threatening to rain it down on millions of innocent people with unconstrained brutality and savagery. Trump and Hegseth set out to prove otherwise, and at this too they failed miserably.

The most important thing to understand about the “madman theory” of foreign policy is that it was designed by losers for losers.

The world first heard of the madman theory from a 1978 memoir by President Richard Nixon’s former chief of staff H. R. Haldeman. According to Haldeman, Nixon said: “I want the North Vietnamese to believe I’ve reached the point where I might do anything to stop the war.” Faced with an otherwise hopeless war in Vietnam, Nixon would pretend to be crazy to intimidate the North Vietnamese into allowing him some face-saving escape.

Nobody executes a madman strategy when he feels that he’s winning. Strong and successful powers emphasize consistency and predictability. So do powers that hope to be seen as strong and successful. When China’s foreign minister speaks to the world, he uses language such as “China will be a reliable force for stability” and China “is providing the greatest certainty in this uncertain world.” He understands that true power does not need to boast or yell.

Those who feel their power ebbing, however, may bluster and bellow. Over the seven weeks of his Iran war so far, Donald Trump has discovered that no amount of the force at his disposal will calm world energy markets or boost his sagging poll numbers. He has tried a double strategy of promising imminent breakthroughs in negotiations while posting ever more violent threats on social media to ostensibly accelerate those negotiations. But if this was a madman strategy, it signally failed to gain the advantage that he sought. Everyone could see that Trump wanted a deal more than his Iranian counterparts did. A good rule of thumb is that the side that wants a deal more is the side that is losing.

The madman strategy is for not-crazy leaders caught in adverse predicaments. It’s a strategy of deception. The madman strategist pretends to be willing to do things that he’s not really willing to do. This approach relies on credibility: Rivals must be able to take the threat of extreme action seriously.

Trump’s problems with this strategy are ironic. Foreign leaders are surely willing to believe that Trump is “crazy” in the sense that he is detached from reality. They have seen him miscalculate risk and bungle all kinds of projects, such as his trade wars with China and his attempted coup on January 6, 2021. But they also know that when push really comes to shove, Trump will flinch. TACO has become, like NATO, an acronym so familiar that it no longer needs spelling out.

The Iranians just executed the most dramatic TACO event in history. Trump threatened to annihilate their entire civilization if they didn’t agree to his demands to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Iran defied the threat—and now Trump has apparently conceded control over the strait and the right to impose tolls on the ships that navigate it. On the point in which Trump tried hardest to terrorize, the Iranians aptly guessed that he was bluffing.

Trump has taught the world that he has every quality of the madman except indifference to pain. He likes his wars unilateral, quick, and cheap. He won’t seek consent from Congress; he cannot appeal to public opinion. He just gambles that the war will end before his poll numbers sink too deep. When this latest war of his turned difficult, he panicked. Everyone could see the panic, including the Iranians. His blood-curdling Truth Social posts—shocking as they were—proclaimed desperation, not resolve. That’s the Trump version of the madman strategy: yelling at people in the street while begging those same people for a bailout. What’s the opposite of the expression crazy like a fox?

The Forever Spoiler: Netanyahu Has Been Blowing Up Diplomacy With Iran for Decades

Israel’s vicious attack on Lebanon emerged as the biggest threat to the Iran ceasefire. That might be intentional.

The ceasefire announced Tuesday night by President Donald Trump and confirmed by Iranian officials is on life support. If Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu gets his way, it may soon be dead.

Over the first 36 hours of the supposed ceasefire, hundreds have been killed and thousands injured in Israeli strikes on Lebanon. The attacks extended beyond Israeli’s traditional targets in southern Lebanon and Beirut’s outskirts into the central parts of the capital — and may mark the heaviest bombardment of the country since Israel’s 1982 invasion.

Trump suggested the ceasefire remains intact because Israel’s attacks are “a separate skirmish,” but the official announcement of the agreement described “an immediate ceasefire everywhere including Lebanon.” The language was put forward by Pakistan’s prime minister, who had brokered the deal and, according to the New York Times, the U.S. had seen the text before it was publicly released.

The words “including Lebanon,” however, lasted no longer than it took for Netanyahu to talk to Trump immediately before the ceasefire announcement. Trump confirmed Thursday that he told Netanyahu to “low-key it,” appearing to give Israel a green light to immediately violate the ceasefire and put it at risk of collapse.

In response, Iran says it will not open the Strait of Hormuz so long as Israel is violating the ceasefire. And planned talks in Islamabad for the U.S. and Iran to hammer out a longer-term agreement during the two-week ceasefire window have been thrown into doubt.

Netanyahu once said, “America is a thing you can move very easily.”

For his part, Netanyahu sought to dispel any notion that the Iran war was ending, emphasizing that the ceasefire is temporary and “a way station on the way to achieving all of our goals.”

When it comes exerting Israeli influence on the U.S., Netanyahu once infamously said, “America is a thing you can move very easily.” Indeed, according to reports, it was Netanyahu who convinced Trump to launch this war in the first place.

Now, potentially upending U.S. efforts to disentangle itself from conflict with Iran, the Israeli prime minister finds himself on familiar footing: playing the role of spoiler against any form of U.S.–Iran détente.

Decades of Détente-Busting

America’s supposed junior partner has worked ceaselessly to prevent any off-ramp from confrontation between the U.S. and Iran. In 1995, when Iran and the U.S. flirted with economic rapprochement by opening the Iran oil industry to American investment and development, Israel and AIPAC lobbied Congress and President Bill Clinton to block it.

In 2002, as Iran worked directly with the U.S. on Afghanistan in the aftermath of September 11, seeking a grand bargain, Israel interdicted a weapons shipment it said was bound for Palestinian forces, making questionable claims about the shipment’s Iranian provenance. The seizure helped tank the exploratory talks on Afghanistan and convinced President George W. Bush instead to infamously cast Iran as part of the “axis of evil.”

Over the course of President Barack Obama’s Iran nuclear talks from 2013 to 2015, Israel worked to block a deal — with Netanyahu engaging in unprecedented efforts to sabotage diplomacy. He even addressed a joint session of Congress against a nuclear deal over the White House’s objections. Ultimately, Netanyahu succeeded with Trump’s ascension: Under intense lobbying, Trump tore up the deal and nearly brought the countries to war before his first term ended.

Joe Biden campaigned on reentering the deal, but that aim was prematurely dispatched during Biden’s transition when Israel assassinated Iran’s top nuclear scientist in 2020, prompting Iranian hard-liners to pass legislation that blew up talks. When negotiations finally began in earnest in 2021, Israel launched an attack on Iran’s Natanz nuclear facility. Iran responded by announcing it would, for the first time, enrich uranium to nearly weapons-grade. The talks, predictably, failed.

Trump’s Second Term

Though Trump has proved to be a willing partner in Netanyahu’s push to increase tensions with Iran, Israel nonetheless now found ways to play the spoiler — much in the same manner it did with Clinton, Bush, Obama, and Biden.

These were not wars to defeat Iran, but rather wars to defeat U.S. diplomatic efforts.

The Israelis successfully turned two round of nuclear talks during Trump’s second term into cover for surprise attacks. Both the war on Iran in June 2025 and the current one were initiated not amid great diplomatic impasses, but when Iran put forward workable proposals. In both cases, U.S. officials said Israel was going to act regardless of the American position — and so the U.S. had to join the wars.

These were not wars to defeat Iran, but rather wars to defeat U.S. diplomatic efforts. They are the kinetic manifestation of Israel’s long efforts to keep the U.S. in a permanent state of war with Iran, sometimes cold, sometimes hot.

If U.S.–Iran talks do move forward and there actually is progress toward hammering out a sustainable cessation of hostilities, Israel will remain a wildcard. Any long-term ceasefire will require Israel’s acquiescence.

If Netanyahu tanks the ceasefire and the U.S. and global economy continues to suffer, Israel’s already plunging support among Americans is likely to falter even further. At this point, however, Netanyahu seems more concerned with his domestic political welfare than his credibility with American voters.

Netanyahu is widely thought to benefit from wars — from Gaza to Iran and now, most critically, in Lebanon — to shore up his political fortunes. He faces an election in October and losing could lead to the revival of corruption charges that might land him in prison.

The question now may unfortunately not be whether Iran and the U.S. can find a compromise. Instead, the fate of the global economy and, not least, Iranians themselves, could rest between Netanyahu and Trump, who faces his own political challenges in midterm elections this year.

It may once again be a question of whether it is America or Israel who blinks first.

When The Matrix was absorbed into MAGA’s political symbolism during Donald Trump’s rise, the movie’s famous pill metaphor was blunt and effective.

Voters were told they faced a profound choice: take the blue pill and remain trapped in a comforting but false reality constructed by elites, or swallow the red pill and confront the hard truths about America, power and decline, with Trump as their guide.

It helped define a movement that prided itself on skepticism of institutions and hostility to official narratives. Being “redpilled” added a certain cachet to conservatives who declared themselves as enlightened swallowers.

But MAGA’s most potent metaphor is returning in an unexpected form. This time, the dilemma is internal. And this time, Trump is the blue pill.

A Breaking Point Years in the Making

The Jeffrey Epstein files episode had already begun to erode Trump’s standing as the movement’s ultimate truth-teller, exposing limits to his ability—or willingness—to confront uncomfortable realities favored by his base.

Pressure has been building inside MAGA for weeks over the U.S. war in Iran and Trump’s close alignment with Israel.

Iran, and serious questions about its consequences for the U.S., has forced the issue for Trump.

Unlike previous flashpoints, this one implicated a core ideological promise of MAGA: that a Trump-led America would avoid foreign entanglements and reject the interventionism of the pre-2016 Republican Party.

Instead, the movement now faces a reality in which Trump is justifying a war that many of his most vocal allies believe no “America First” president should have initiated or sustained.

It’s a choice between ideological purity and personal loyalty. At one point, they were the same thing within MAGA. But the divergence has arrived.

The Rebellion of MAGA Media Heavyweights

Some of the loudest challenges to Trump on Iran have come from prominent figures who once echoed or amplified his worldview.

Tucker Carlson, long one of the most influential voices in the MAGA sphere, and a guru of America First, delivered a blistering monologue criticizing Trump, U.S. involvement in Iran, and trashing its strategic and moral logic.

His comments, shared widely online, positioned the war as a betrayal of the populist mandate Trump once embodied, and that Carlson himself had campaigned for. He also blasted Trump for the tone and content of an explicit threat issued against Iran on Easter.

Megyn Kelly followed with a sharply critical segment on her own show, similarly arguing that escalation in Iran cut against the promises that initially animated Trump’s political revolution, calling his threats of civilizational destruction “disgusting” and a sign of weakness.

"I am sick of this s**t," Kelly said. "I am sick of it. Can't he just behave like a normal human?"

They were not alone. Candace Owens, who has maintained a massive online audience by blending cultural grievance, anti-establishment politics, and outright conspiracy peddling, raised the idea of forcing Trump from office.

"The 25th amendment needs to be invoked. He is a genocidal lunatic. Our Congress and military need to intervene. We are beyond madness," Owens wrote on social media.

Alex Jones, a fringe but still influential figure at the edges of MAGA media, who built his fame on pushing outlandish conspiracies, offered even more strident denunciations, describing the Iran war as a catastrophic departure from populist nationalism.

“The new Trump is a rotting husk of the old Trump,” Jones said in a post on X.

What unites these reactions is not ideology—these figures span MAGA’s respectable and conspiratorial wings—but a shared conclusion: Trump is wrong, and worse, he is lying to shape a false narrative.

They, along with another former MAGA star, Marjorie Taylor Greene, are emerging as leaders in the movement’s civil war, where the U.S. relationship with Israel in particular—vital in the Iran war—is a major dividing line.

Trump’s Counterattack—and What It Reveals

Trump responded to these attacks in kind, and in classically Trumpian fashion.

In a Truth Social post, he explicitly singled out Carlson, Kelly, Owens, and Jones, launching tailored attacks that accused them of disloyalty, opportunism, and distortion, and mocked their own recent struggles.

They all “have one thing in common, Low IQs,” Trump wrote. “They’re stupid people, they know it, their families know it, and everyone else knows it, too! Look at their past, look at their record. They don’t have what it takes, and they never did!”

The substance of Trump’s rebuttal mattered less than its posture.

Rather than reconcile MAGA’s competing instincts—restraint abroad versus strength through force—Trump attempted to reassert himself as sole arbiter of the movement’s reality and discredit critical voices within the movement.

Iran, in his telling, represents a decisive demonstration of American power and strategic clarity, a clear and complete victory. Dissenters, by implication, are either naïve, compromised, or plain old dumb.

It does little to resolve the ideological crisis within MAGA. But it does help force things to a head.

Two Realities, One Movement

Beneath the public sparring lies MAGA’s most fundamental choice yet.

The movement can accept Trump’s claim that American power is being successfully wielded and strengthened in Iran, the costs are justified, and deluded critics misunderstand the stakes.

Or it can choose a rival interpretation, that the U.S. is sliding into another misguided and costly foreign war, contradicting the very principles MAGA claims to uphold.

Iran is uniquely suited to force this decision. It strips away ambiguity.

Either America is winning a war that makes the country stronger in the world, or it is becoming entangled in a conflict that weakens credibility, drains resources, and undermines “America First.”

There is no rhetorical middle ground.

MAGA’s Longstanding Claim to Hidden Truths

MAGA has always characterized itself as a truth-seeking movement.

Accusations of conspiracy thinking were brushed aside with the claim that the movement was often proved right.

Adherents routinely spoke of two realities: the official story and the hidden truth accessible only to those willing to question it.

That dynamic worked to Trump’s advantage when he controlled the narrative.

During January 6 and his subsequent legal battles over the 2020 election, for example, MAGA largely accepted Trump’s interpretation of events, even when it conflicted with established facts. Loyalty and truth became intertwined.

The Epstein files episode exposed cracks in that arrangement. Trump’s reluctance to confront or disclose what portions of his base expected him to revealed the limits of his authority as MAGA’s truth broker.

Iran has tightened those limits around him even closer.

The Post-Trump Question Arrives Early

The deeper significance of this moment lies in its timing.

Trump will leave office in January 2029. MAGA knows this. The movement’s most serious figures are already thinking in post-Trump terms, even as many continue to publicly defend him.

Iran accelerates that reckoning. If Trump is wrong here, then MAGA must decide whether loyalty to the man outweighs loyalty to the worldview he helped forge.

For a movement that once insisted the messenger mattered less than the message, this is an existential tension.

MAGA is fighting on these issues today to shape the movement’s tomorrow.

It knows it must evolve beyond him if it is to survive as the driving force of American conservative politics. And it must choose Trump’s successor sooner than he leaves.

It is laying the ground for the Republican presidential battle to come and setting the ideological expectations for Trump's heir.

Pope, Antipope—and Morpheus

In a week when the Avignon Papacy unexpectedly surfaced in White House conversations, drawing a parallel is too tempting to resist.

MAGA now resembles a movement with a pope and an antipope: Trump as institutional authority and Carlson as insurgent claimant to moral truth.

But MAGA’s cultural language is not medieval theology. It is pop-cultural rebellion. And in that vocabulary, The Matrix still reigns.

Trump is no longer Morpheus, the figure offering liberation through painful reality.

That’s Carlson now, and he’s offering to show MAGA how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Remember, all he’s offering is the truth—nothing more.
