My god, it's suddenly so clear, how could I have been so stupid (hey - it's an expression, I see a bunch of ya twitchin' to comment...)?
Don't look at what they said they wanted to accomplish in Iraq...look at what they have accomplished!
Their mission, after all, was simple.
To pluck Saddam from power, and establish a permanent U.S. military presence in the Middle East! And they've done it!!
Freedom and stability, you ask? Pleasent side-effects, if they come.
WMD's? Well, in the face of their mission accomplished, who cares? I mean it was like the carrot, right? Leading the donkey in the right direction?

I, for one, am relieved that none of our people over there died for nothing.

Any comments on my revelation?
Oh, and maybe, just maybe all of us here should climb off the administration's back concerning Iraq, eh?*

*Yeah, and maybe I'm a Chinese jet pilot Chrisisall

I just this minute got back from Logan Airport (a two hour drive, lots of time to think), and it suddenly dawned on me (with lights and glowey stuff an' all)- Bush may not be the brightest bulb on the Santa display, but many of his administration must have SOME brains!! They wouldn't waste money and lives on a goal that any fifth grader could tell them is nigh unreachable, so the Lords of Kobol made me see the truth.
The goal is not what they told us, but the true one is a success!
Steppin' out to Eden, yea brother!!!

All rejoice!!!

Ok, here I go again with the PNAC stuff. It's NOT a conspiracy. They've been open and above board with it for all who cared to listen. You're exactly on target Chrisisall. That was the goal from the beginning. The rest was all window dressing - aka bullshit.

You have learned well. (whoosh whoosh)

heh heh heh

If you want to find out what's REALLY going on, you need to do two things:

1) Give absolutely NO credit to what Republican administrations say they want to do. Just watch what they do. (You got that part fine)

2)Since about 90% news is gathered from government releases assume that the media is just a conduit for the WH and pay attention to the news flow and cadence- which issues seem to gain sudden prominance (drug running in Panama as a rationale for invasion, for example) and which issues seem to disappear. Learn to listen to the sound of silence....

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you.

The real Bush coup has been their collusion with the Clintons. First George Bush makes a deal to lose the 1992 election. Then Clinton serves two terms and uses the Democratic registars in Florida's minoriy counties to cost Gore the election in 2000. Clinton also helps orchestrate the rise of Al Queda so that their attacks helped keep Bush in office for two terms. But Cheney is too old to run, so the Republcians have no designated successor to Bush leaving the field to Hillary who is convienantly turning up supporting the war and hanging around with the likes of Old Newt and John McCain. Hillary will serve two terms only to be replaced by an aging Jeb. Meanwhile George P. Bush will marry Chelsea and we will have little William Jefferson Bush...

Mr. Chrisisall

Oh, you want more then one word? Well, beyond more then one word I can’t be held responsible for the validity of anything said, but okay.

I don’t believe that the establishment of a permanent military base in the Middle East was even a goal, much less the principle goal of this administration’s decision to enter Iraq. I think that if the issue of a permanent US presence in the Middle East was a major point in the internal pre-war debate, it was probably closer to the opposite. More then likely the elimination of a permanent presence was the argument, if it came up at all.

And it doesn’t make sense either. We’ve had a US military presence in nine Middle Eastern or regional nations well before 2001. So a military presence can’t possibly be the principle or even a principle reason for the war.

I’m no small fish, but I don’t brush shoulders with the Joint Chiefs or the cabinet either, so I really don’t know what they talked about. I doubt they would tell me anyway. And the point is probably a moot one, since whether a permanent US presence in the Iraq was a selling point or not, we were likely to be there a while either way.

All that aside though, the truth is I’m in favor of a permanent or semi-permanent US military presence in the Iraq. The US has created boundless good from permanent or semi-permanent military presence in the remains of former totalitarian state or feudal imperialisms. Germany, Italy, Japan, and South Korea have all benefited and continue to benefit from a huge US presence. Now you might not know that from the anti-American rhetoric, but all but the most ignorant must certainly admit that a US military presence is all that created these liberal democracies from the totalitarian states they had previously been, and all but the most ardent anti-American citizen of these countries will pause with concern when they discover that the US military bases their economy relies on are closing. There are actually countries out there begging for a permanent US military presence, because of the enormous benefit, both economic and political, it can bring. And the countries that have a permanent US military presence will often seek great concessions to keep it.

The Middle East is a hot bed of political strife, feudal warlords and economic chaos. It’s unstable and has been at the brink of implosion for years. A permanent or semi-permanent US military presence safeguarding a Middle Eastern liberal democracy in Iraq will undoubted piss off a lot terrorists and anti-American fruits, but that’s because it, more then anything else, has the potential to turn the Middle East into a stable democratic region, thereby robbing the despots, fanatics and terrorists of their opportunity to gain control.

So in short, I don’t know if a permanent US presence was ever a pre-war goal, but it may have become a post-war one, and I’m just all peachy with it . . . if we can keep from F’ing it up.

500+ words. Is that long enough?

Finn, as always I don't agree 100% with you, but you gave me (us) a different take on the question I raised, and a good deal to consider.
I totally agree on the positive effects of our bases in foreign lands, and actually, my meanest post-911 knee jerk reaction to the attack was not to nuke anyone, it was to pull out every man and ship of ours out of the middle east, period. Imagine what would happen there after that...
Like I said, it was a mean thought, I'm not sure I was taking a lot of things into account.

Anyway, thanks for the view from the inside, as it were.

On a more serious note, quite frankly France's reasons for being anti war were, I believe, far from a moral one, and more about the big Oil deals they had secured with Saddam, which are now, of course null and void.
Its more to do with discrediting anyone who dissagrees with him, or anything he wants to do, it just pains me that so many Americans are taken in by it.

The Trek refrence was that of being confued, ie: I, Mudd - the scenes where the androids are confused by what they don't understand, they say "Please explain", and then "Norman, co-odinate", the central brain that make sense of it all for them. I was being too general over the French, but you got my point I think. Although point one is that there wasn't really a US at the time

As for British food I aggree wholeheartedly, its the bloody French again shouting their mouths of when they can't get their own way .
Bit of useless trivia for ya, out of the 100 top resturants in the world in think 25 of them is in the UK...
Not to bad for such a small country with such bad food Mr Chirac.

Q: What do you have when you are holding two little green balls in your hand.
A: Kermit's undivided attention.

SX, I feel you are taking this very important thread far too lightly!

Of course we should invade Canada. We must free it's people from the facist health care system, and establish contols over the comic book retail buisnesses!
Warp 1 comics' time is limited...

I pay for all my major surgery out-of-pocket, they can too Chrisisall

For those interested in the concept of whom we should invade next, there are some nominations for invasion over on the "A Modest Proposal" thread on the RWED board. Some from me, some from others. More would be welcome.

Chris, you need to come down to the South. We’ll hook you up with what American food is all about. Fried chicken and gravy. White beans and cornbread. Fried Okra and catfish.

I got to go get something to eat.

Now you're talkin'. Get that at a place up here named Smokin' Lil's, and it's plumb.

Hmmm, guess I don't hate this country after all. And I don't really care about penguins; they have no delivery system for their particular brand of terror.

No, not the beak! Chrisisall

I don’t think a NPD would work. It would be impossible to discriminate, much less intercept such a high velocity beak.

We would need multiple KVs and what if there were countermeasures? Perhaps a cloud a radar absorbing Penguin spittle.

You seem to know a little too much concerning the probable pengiun peril, say, you got a little waterfowl in the cocktail there?

Tonights episode: Max battles Finn MacPenguin, a Manticore nomoly with a wicked spinning back beak!
Can she stand the heat? Er, COLD?

It IS late...Chrisisall
