1) b) Nixon

4) d) Karimov

Not too sure about the other two, although I do have my suspicions. I'd have to do some research to be sure though, and I think that's against the rules.

Don't feel like doing a lot of research, but I did do a bit of wiki-ing, so my best guesses (with some help) for the other two are:

Select to view spoiler:

2) a), 3) a)

(spoilered because I had some help (although I'm not saying my answers are right)).

Okay, here's an easy one.

This leader was so offended by a historic national statue that he ordered it covered.

a) Mullah Omar, Afghanistan Taliban
b) John Ashcroft, Attny General USA

Is it 4) c) then?

Lol yeah. But that one was sort of a dead give-away even if one didn't know about that incident. Mullah Omar is well-known for having statues of things he doesn't like simply blown up (such as centuries-old Buddha statues).

Let's see...Ashcroft had one covered up, Omar had many blown up, including the Bamiyan Buddhas.

So who wins the evilness prize in this matchup? Is it easier to pull a drape back, or recreate blasted giant 2,000 year old limestone carvings?

I started to look about to try and see why they would do this and found this article

http://www.usatoday.com/news/science/archaeology/2001-03-22-afghan-bud
dhas.htm

" In Afghanistan recently, supreme Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar issued an edict against un-Islamic graven images, which means all idolatrous images of humans and animals. As a result, the Taliban are destroying all ancient sculptures. "

While not having much familarity with the Koran, it reminded me of this

8. No Graven Images & Idols

Exodus 20:4 Thou shalt nor make unto thee any graven image, of any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; Thou
shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them; for I, the LORD thy God, am a jealous
God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation
of them that hate me (2nd Commandment).

Deut. 4:23 Take heed unto yourselves, lest ye forget the covenant of the LORD your God, which he
made with you, and make you a graven image, or the likeness of anything, which the LORD
thy God hath forbidden thee.

Psalms 78:58 For they provoked him to anger with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their
graven images.

Isaiah 42:17 They shall be greatly ashamed, that trust in graven images, that say to the molten images,Ye are our gods.

Jeremiah 8:19 Why have they provoked me to anger with their graven images, and with strange vanities?

Leviticus 26:1 Ye shall make you no idols nor graven image, neither rear you up a standing image, neither
shall ye set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down unto it: for I am the LORD your
God.

Isaiah 2:8 Their land also is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own
fingers have made.

2nd Cor 6:16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living
God.

I John 5:21 Little Children, keep yourselves from idols.

1 Thes 1:9 For they themselves show of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye
turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God.

This lead me to a new term : Iconoclasm

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iconoclasm

It seems Catholics, Prosedants, Jews, Moslems all have more in common than they would be willing to admit....

Thats easy. Ashcroft ordered the "cover up".

The Taliban preferred to blow up the statues they didn't approve of.

Isn't the US supposed to be all into freedom of speech and expression, expression like art, while the Taliban are all about "do as we say" though.

Point is you expect it from the Taliban, but not the US.

Far, far more than you'd even believe.

At one time they did have peace, in accord with an agreement called "Dastur al-Medina".
(The Constitution of Medina)".
http://theamericanmuslim.org/tam.php/features/articles/understanding_i
slam_challenges_to_democracy_and_diversity
/

That peace came in response to actual religious tolerance and sharing of 'common ground' between beliefs.

Care to guess who wrote it ?
Mohammed.

Not quite the warmonger he's been historically made out to be, is he?

All of the core beliefs involved, regardless of where they go from there, believe themselves to be the sons and daughters of Abraham/Ibrihim, and state that they should not kill other sons and daughters thereof.

There's a lot of common ground there, and like a family feud, that's probably why the hatreds are so very bitter.

If the US had blown up the Bhuddas, I'd surely be upset. Ashcroft putting up curtains was just stupid and sort of silly, gave the press a good opportunity for bad puns about the Atty Gen being "abreast" of the times, and has since been reversed with no harm done. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8360632/

Considering the two incidents comparable is just about as stupid and silly as Ashcroft's cover-up.

Then it's good it was reversed, but it was still government censorship based on the whims of one man in the first place. Not a good thing.

Wow, jailing and turning a blind eye to beatings thereof of women who have had sex out of wed-lock.

Your a hard-liner all right.

You know that homosexuallity was a stoneable offence to the Taliban, right.

Khyron,

The minute I take a discussion board so seriously that I can't have a little fun with it, that's when I need to step back and re-evaluate. Others may have differing opinions.

I've had some good discussions here, even with Rue and Citizen, but it seems that the insults-to-rational discourse ratio has gone South in a big way. That's why I don't play as much as I used to.
