Sometimes you own the libs. Sometimes, the libs own you.

My nepalese friend showed me this link:

http://sebsonline.org/forum/forum_view.aspx?F=1&T=73111

It's the transcript of a phone conversation between a mother (muwa) in nepal and her son (JC) who lives in the US.

It's funny, as well as insightful

I got my friend to translate some of the nepali terms that they say (although you can still get the gist of what they're saying if you just read):

JC: son
Muwa: Mother
Buwa: Father
Dijju: Elder sister
Hajurmuwa: grandmother

Banita: daughter in Law
Nishant: grand son
Darshan: greetings to someone senior to you
Gyanendra: The present King of Nepal
Girija: The present prime minister (for the 5th time) and the leader of Nepali Congress Party
Madhav, Gagan, Deuba: leaders of various parties and groups who formed the democratic alliance
Putali Sadak: One of the major alleys in Kathmandu
Aandolan: revolution
Padma Kanya Campus: Padma Girls College
Bikram Sambat (BS): Nepalese calender year, currently the year is 2063

Thanks so much for that link, it was something everyone here would be interested in reading. Not only a slice of life there, but very witty.

Different customs, same people. I feel for them.

SEVENPERCENT

Quote:

everyone here's a lunatic. Nobody gets it until they don't have it. When they have it, they don't know what to do with it. So they abuse it. And they are back to not having it… and they march and protest for not having it.

JC: You're talking about democracy or servants?

Muwa: You know what I'm talking about. For people here, democracy is about the freedom to be corrupt. And those who are not corrupt, like your buwa, they are gravely ineffective and incompetent.

Smart woman. And the sad part is she could just as well be talking about the US. Seems people aren't so different the world over, after all.

Nostalgia bump (the thread is over 3 years old).

A favourite quote:

"But what we have here are not leaders. These are protesters. Girija, Madhav, or Gagan, or who not, these are all protesters. Nothing more. A leader should be a protester, a diplomat, a philosopher, an intellect, an orator, and a listener."

Palin 2012!

DREAMTROVE

lol.

interesting. I suspect some of this is pastiche built on a real transcript, but I won't nitpick that part.

It's a mouse eye view of the China-West struggle for dominance, and people caught up in the cross-fire. Of course, everywhere already controlled by one or the other is in sorry shape.

As for intellectual rulers, it's a bad idea. We try it over and over again. Everyone does. You need someone who asks questions. I thought much more interesting was "someone who listens." The real problem is what we get is people who "know" and so they don't need to learn, or listen.

What someone knows going in isn't important, education isn't important. All that's important is that someone is capable of listening to the voice of reason.

Re: Palin 3023, oops, typo, 2012, this netbook kb sometimes gets the better of me, and yes, I get the joke, but:

The number one question for me in 2012 will be "who can better resist the influence peddlers" but I intend to make that choice much sooner, to help influence the outcome. As I said, everyone gets 18 months. So far, I will grant that Obama is a great intellect and capable of great things, but so far has shown very little ability to resist the influence peddlers. Bush had no ability whatsoever. McCain had some, but not much.

This is the issue for "third world" countries as well. I think a lot of people misunderstand me because I've never clarified this point:

this is my measuring stick. look, listen, learn, and resist the advice of your advisors, let common sense prevail, and hear the voice of reason, and try to do what's best for your country, don't be afraid to fail, but have the courage to try again, when you do, and know when to step down and get out of the way.

(And I didn't actually say this last part thinking about Palin: It's something the last two presidents and a good number of other politicians should have done.)

By my measure, the world has some strong leaders, I may not always agree with them, but they try, and some that tried, but failed, and knew when to get out of the way:

Vladimir Putin
Manmohan Singh
Mikhail Gobavhev
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
Richard Nixon
Margaret Thatcher
Pervez Musharraf

just to name a few.

Here are some pathetic pawns who were or are a liability to their country and the world:

Boris Yeltsin
George W Bush
Junichiro Koizumi
Saddam Hussein

and far too many more to mention: Pawns who were easily lead by the most manipulative influence peddlers towards a disastrous course, and never stopped to listen to the will of the people.

It's too early for me to weigh in on Barack Obama, and *way* to early for me to cast judgment on Sarah Palin. Look for that post in the summer of 2014. I expect her to win the midterm elections, that's not an endorsement, it's a prediction. My second most likely selection would be Mitt Romney, but I think he lacks the base appeal. We'll see.

Anyway, interesting commentary on Nepal. I've actually been following it for some time maybe because I follow everything, but also because this is what I see as one of the early warning shots of a potential WWIII, A China-India conflict.

I think I agree, kind of. I think what's best is an intellectual leader who has some *humility*. I'm not ideologically anti-government, but I think people in power have to be realistic and humble about the ability of the state to interfere effectively and not adversely in people's lives. But it can be done.
