... then again, what does the opinion of people in other countries matter, right?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/5077984.stm

THe first paragraph reads: "People in European and Muslim countries see US policy in Iraq as a bigger threat to world peace than Iran's nuclear programme, a survey has shown."

Here's the poll itself: http://pewglobal.org/

Hell, I would lay good odds that a substantial percentage of people in THIS country see US policy in Iraq as a bigger threat to world peace than Iran's nuclear programme.

The one sure thing about stupidity is that revulsion for it crosses all barriers of language and culture.

Well, speaking for myself, I have to say that the Nuclear Program in Iran worries me as far that it might end up the same as in Irak.

At the moment a diplomatic solution looks probable to me and I have no problem with Iran having nuclear powerplants (why use the oil if you can sell it for a lot of money, right?). If they agree to controls by the IAEA, of course.

The situation in Irak is, that it is bad and it doesn't seem to get better. (and as an european smart-ass I'd have to say: "TOLD YOU SO!"). If the US leave, were going to have a civil-war ending up in a new religeous islamic country. If not, nothing is going to change.

According to http://pewglobal.org/reports/display.php?ReportID=252 (scroll down a bit), 31% of Americans think US policy in Iraq is a great danger, so that's pretty substantial. 46% think that Iran's nuclear programme is a great danger (and 34% see North Korea as a great danger, 43% the Middle-East).

Hardan, have to agree with you on all points. The US has really dug a hole for themselves in Iraq and it's kind of a case of "damned if you leave, damned if you don't".

I agree totally, although I'll make an addendum saying that Bush being president is probably the biggest threat to world peace.

Absolutely Deepgirl... I feel like wearing an " I didn't vote for him so don't blame me" tee-shirt every time I travel. There's just nothing like having that embarrassing excuse for a president to make you embarrassed to admit to being American.

So people in the rest of the world agrees with the people in this country on that point.

Now if we could only get the government of this country to agree with the people of this country.

So, uh, out of curiosity what was supposed to piss us off about that?

Well, as I said, it's "only" about 31% of Americans that think the US poses a great threat, which is definitely substantial but less than the 46% that think Iran poses a great danger. Most other countries have more people that think the US is a big threat compared to people that think Iran is a big threat.

To become a US citizen you have to renounce other citizenship, provided you are not born that way, but the reverse does not hold true. I know that you can become French through marriage, my aunt did that, what are other ways to be part of a different country.

Is there a way I could stay American but have a Canadian passport as well? You know, for protection in other countries.

-

By the way,

The only thing that would annoy me, on this topic, is if someone tried to convince me it matters when people think, "All Americans are fat and stupid," or, "Every American is either a hate monger or an apathetic bastard." I'm more annoyed by the idea that I should care about what a bigot who judges people before he or she meets them thinks than I am at the bigot's actual thoughts.

In this case nothing of the sort came up so I'm totally non-pissed.

Not too sure, but I do know somebody who was born and raised in Canada but also had an American passport simply because his mother was American (his father was Canadian). But he was born a significant number of decades ago (a nice way of saying he's an old man), and it's likely that the laws have become stricter since then.

I've found that most people will get to know you before they do the "Evil American" generalization. But when I'm dealing with a potentially sketchy person, I have absolutely no problem saying I'm from Canada.

I know about that kind of thing, it's simple really, prove that at least one of your parents is American and you are one two, no matter who you are or where you're from.

But being born isn't the only way to become a citizen, though it helps if you've done that first.

Dual citizens aren't too rare, My Aunt is a dual citizen France and US as are her two kids. A quick look says that under Canadian law you don't need to renounce earlier citizenships to become a Canadian so in theory they could all become tri citizens if they were to become permanent residents of Canada and jump through the appropriate hoops, doesn't look there are that many hoops either.

I don't think I was all that far from being Canadian actually, if I'd been a bit premature I would have been.

-

I have a problem, I say something random about citizenship, and then I feel the need to do research on the topic for no real reason other than saying something randomly.

Canada isn't included because there are some of us coughMEcough who question whether or not it actually exist. Its a conspiracy...just like Iowa!

As for being too embarrased to travel. Poppycock! When I am over the pond, I simply point out the idiots in every other government in the world and say I will explain Bush when you explain (insert idiot here). Besides, I never had any problem because I am not loud and obnoxious. Those Americans that are loud, obnoxious, lacking in manners and etc, deserve to be embarrased. Because they are embarrasing.

Well said; i travel alot, especially to Europe, and i am always emabaressed by the way some Americans behave in foreign lands. it makes it hard for normal folk like myself. I've traveled to Amsterdam many times (hard to believe but true) and the only nationality the dutch seem to hate more than us are the Brits

The US allows concurrent citizenship with other countries that also allow it. Many Jewish folks are both citizens of the US and Israel, for example.

I know a guy who has 4 passports: American, Canadian, British, and Irish. He was born of Irish parents in Britain, immigrated to and grew up in Canada, and married an American.

Speaking of traveling, most people don't have a problem distinguishing between you and your government. They know their govts don't represent THEM, so it isn't a stretch to believe yours doesn't represent you. I traveled in Egypt just last year and had no problems with the mountains of Egyptians who hate Bush. We just Bush-bash together. :)

And yes, it helps if one is polite and not rude. I am much more embarrassed by fellow American travelers than I am our govt.
