I agree with the first post but theres no need 2 broadcast ur opinions in such an offensive way.

And rightstuff your worse than he is! A persons religous beliefs have no effect on what theyre like as a person. everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Get on at him for the random offensive broadcast but dont project your own negative beliefs onto him.

(and as Alisa said theyre are fairies)

You were busy trying to get yourself lit on fire. It happens.

Here's something I find very interesting about the concept of God (at least an omni-max god, such as the one believed by Christians):

Epicurus:

Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not impotent.

Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.

Is he both able and willing? Whence then is evil?

Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?

That presupposes that evil is not necessary to the script. God needs conflict to tell the story. A story about happy happy Earth, with no hatred or fighting wouldn't even recoup it's investment after the international take is added in.

Well, I don't know about you, but if I worshipped an all-loving, all-knowing, all-powerful, all-present being, I'd kind of want him to take it out of the script.

Besides, your beef is with Epicurus, not me.

I believe the whole evil thing has more to do with man's free will than God's indifference. We were give free will so we could chose our own path in life. Evil doesn't make God happy.

i think its interesting to note that almost all prior civilizations, to my knowledge, believed in one or more Gods..literally in contact with them at a point.

im not sure we can just discount and discredit everything our ancestors believed, simply because we believe ourselves to be intellictually superior in every way.

All civilisations had sex as well.

Doesn't prove anything other than Human beings tend to like having sex.

Scientific studies have suggested that the Brain is hard-wired for belief in God, or at least spirituality and mysticism. Maybe that's proof of God in and of itself (if one is so inclined to believe), but either way we can't take the fact that most (but not all) civilisations believed in God as proof of God.

It's proof than Humans tend to like to believe in a higher power, nothing more.

Because man was created for the opportunity to be in a free-willed relationship with God. Without free will, love is nothing. Without choice of good and evil, free will is nothing. God lets evil exist for free will's sake.

Evil doesn't exist because of God, it exists because of man. Man has the choice to not be/do evil, and yet it still exists.

Let me chime in with my two cents'...
For some reason, homo sapiens cannot accept the fact that there is not something out there greater than themselves. There must be an explanation for everything, and the easiest way to find the answers is to create a divine presence and attribute all the "unknowns" to this entity, be it benign or malevolent. Because we are technologically superior to our ancestors, as pointed out by AntiMason, does not mean the belief will just go away. Entire civilizations have been built and destroyed because of belief, and will continue to do so until the end of humanity. People generally need to believe in something greater than themselves, to attribute their existence to something other than the luck of the draw. I am not saying those without belief are wrong, nor are they better or worse than those who do believe in a divine being of any kind. I am one of those without belief, yet I am tolerant of those who have faith. It gets them through their lives, helps them when they need it, and generally sets down morales to live by.
It appears that I agree with Citizen; that humans "tend to like to believe in a higher power, nothing more". As long as that belief does not impinge upon my right to not believe, I get along famously with my fellow Man.

People feel alone without the existance of God because there are many things they cant explain.

As people can explain more they have less need for an ominpotent being in control of everything.

God is born out of the unknown
Evil is born out of Fear of the unknown

I won't tell you what to believe if you don't tell me that my faith is based on someone scaring me to follow their bidding. I'll also try not to be condescending about ANY bit...not just big bang/evolution.

I'm not so much believing in the Big Bang...seems to take as much faith to believe all the right elements came together at the perfect moment to cause a huge explosion that created life as it does to believe a higher power that could've created life. On evolution: Check out Creationary evolution.

You simply cannot take a template and try to make everyone of a particular faith fit into it. There are tenets that are set in stone, but others are open to interpretation. Parts of creation/evolution are some of those open to interpretation areas.

Okay, I'm gonna be blunt; I'm athiest, and I'll tell you that. It's a fact.
So much as most people can't bring themselves not to believe in a god of some sorts, I just can't find a reason to believe in one.
I get told I'm gonna burn in hell for being athiest. Well, I'm certain someone has heard of Billy Joel.

Let's all go here, listen to the song. You may have to turn it up. This has a twofold purpose: it's the perfect non-Firefly Firefly definition song, and it also illustrates this argument well for me.

You also might want to watch Stargate SG-1, and apply that theory. Noone said God was a good guy, did they? Did anyone say God was a good guy?
I mean, aside from those who believe in God? The people with the Go'uld (spast, my spelling sucks) as thier gods thought they were good guys, but mostly out of fear.

I actually enjoy these theological discussions lol

and Hero...lmao

I said this before in another "theological" thread

religion is the weapon of man, spirituality is the tool of God...let me add that how you define that god SHOULD be very personal (and once again I quote Dennis "My God happens to think I'm very f***ing funny....which is why I chose him as my god).

now I dont exactly believe there's pearly gates, a line and a bearded, benevolant being (Flash Gordan aside)...but I defintely believe in....something

I just don't want anyone else defining what that is...my best and most profound religous experience came alone, in the woods while gazing up the stars. or...at the Verse!!! ;)

Edit: Bigwolf! Alan is very godlike ;)

What you believe is what you believe, to start a thread like this is a sure sign that you're just trying to be inflammatory (although it has become an interesting discussion).
The whole "I don't believe in god and am therefore smarter than you" thing among some atheists has always struck me as quite pretentious, it's bit like saying i'm right and you can never prove me wrong.

why can't creationism and evolution meet? Quite honestly I believe in both - more in evolution (umm scientific fact people) but there is a good point in the fact that so many things had to be perfect for it to happen...is that not God? or what we call God? (see once again Man assigns a name to something he cannot grasp or understand and yet our ancestors KNEW something had happened - this is most likely verbal lore handed down over a hundred generations)

The Davinci pic of God reaching out to touch David is how I picture evolution...the quagmires were seething, all the appropriate ingredients were there...someone or something reached out and ZING!

Tada!

seem's to have been quite alot of discussion on the nature of atheism and how it intereacts with religion and spirituality over the last few days. interesting to see, wonder if there's something hit the media to get folks thinking along these lines?

haven't noticed much, but i did see a rather interesting story about the protestors who boarded the plane in rpestwick airport, ostensibly to search and make certain it was being used by the americans to transport weaponry to israel. (it's a turrible thing not trusting your government, turrible, wonder why ANYONE would not trust the government, i mean to say...) but yes, the story, 7 of them made it past security, 3 of them made it onto the plane, one was arrested witting in the pilot's seat flicking through the manual

I believe that was sarcasm, making fun by exaggerating what some people may do. You cant believe someone would write something so ignorantly, of course that person wasnt serious, using God and the finger in the same post.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one, so I joined starfleet and was stationed at the SGC to fight the covenant, whos gate happens to be down, and through which I must cast the ring from whence it came. It was our last best hope for peace but it failed so millions of voices cried out and were suddenly silent but there was no spoon and also no fate but what we make for ourselves.

TRAVELER

The universe is made of particles which we call mass and sometimes with enough effort we have energy. You know, light, gravity, heat, etc.

Now will someone tell me where all this mass, that is bouncing, around came from.

I've heard of the big bang. But what went bang?

Did someone put their car in reverse by mistake and hit the person behind them? BANG!

I am not a religious person. Jesus was a nice guy and I would have liked to meet him but I think people have the wrong idea of who he was and what he was trying to tell us. Were told Jesus is the son of God. Well no surprize since God created everything, we all are the sons and daughters of God. We all have a share in this pond we call the universe.

The bible is a difficult issue. It has been edited so much it isn't even close to the original. Depending on who was in power they pulled sections out and put new ones in to suit their needs. And it wasn't written in any language for years. It was past down verbally for centuries before anyone actually sat down to write it.

I go with this. God could either control us to prevent evil, which seems rather dictatorial to me. Or he could give us free will. Free will is not perfect, but has anyone come up with a better idea. We could take it upon ourselves to lockup anyone we feel is tending toward violence and throw away the key. But we don't. So does that make us bad because we allow evil to exist amoungst us. I suppose God could put his hand out and stop evil. But to interfer may prevent something else to occur that may actually be beneificial. If you prevent birth defects because you felt they were evil you may pass up what a child with that defect might accomplish. So where do you draw the line? Hitler. One evil dude. Lets draw the line there. But is that enough. Maybe we better get that guy who just spit on the ground. You have to decide. I'm not wise enough myself to pick who or what should be removed to prevent evil. Do you think God can do a better job. He probably isn't wise enough either. I don't expect God to the job any better than me. If we actually got to talk to God he just may say, "Hey you think this is easy do it yourself."

So if anybody has a better way of handling this universe please let me know.

Maybe he thought it would turn out better than it did. I'm in engineering and with all the formulas and tests and brain storming we usually find a lot wrong with our initial product. We go back and correct errors on ever project I have ever worked on.

I'm sure he did his best and I'm sure he meant for the best, but nothing is perfect. And if it was perfect what would we have? Would this big bang have occured in a perfect universe. Takes some type of spark or imbalance to get things in motion. As soon as you touch something you lose your perfection. An object in space take stands still will never move and nothing happens. An object that is moving is going to bump into something else and now you have a mess. So in order to have change you need imperfection. You need things moving.

You have to tip the scale.

God tipped the scale and got things moving and here we are today.

So you want God to prevent evil, give him a text book on how to do it. Write it all down. If you can do a better job take over.

As for his actual existance I go back to where I began this post. What started all of this? Where did mass come from? What caused this big bang?

My guess is God. A guy who wanted to make something that might actually have some benefits.
I really can tell you why He did it. I can guess.
I think he want company. Sounds silly but I really can not think of another reason. Being alone sucks and he wanted company so he decided to create some.

I actually do try to think of other concepts but this just keeps floating to the top.

Why do we come to this fansite. Because we want to share with somebody else. So why would he be any different. He wants to share his thoughts and ideas with somebody.

I'd say I just put my two cents in but I have looked back at my post and it looks more like a dollar eightyfive. Still cheaper than gas.

Now about Santa Claus.

Just kidding.

Big Bang! See even added illustrations.

SERGEANTX

I'm pretty much with the original poster. And I'm not sure why people would need to take offense. It's obviously an opinion.

Regardless, it begs the question, if it's so obvious that god isn't real, why do so many people believe? Is it hardwired into the human mind? Are they all just sheep?

Should those of us who think we see a deeper truth try to wake up the great mass of the deluded? Do we have any business, or any right to do that? Or should we leave them in their reverie, contented with their myths and happy bedtime stories?

Frankly, I'm not sure. People generally don't like to hear that their most cherished beliefs are hogwash. They certainly don't want to see themselves as suckers.

And here's the bigger question. Do the vast majority of human being need to believe to stay sane? It certainly seems like a possibility. So what if we do manage to convince everyone that god is just a myth, and they all go crazy? Hmmm... I

JOSSISAGOD

You probably won't respond to this so, my point here is really a moot one. I think the question is "What" made this world. Personally, I think it was cosmic particles that came together over uncountable eons, whether or not those cosmic particles were directed by an omnipontent being, I don't know or care. But could you stop spouting the same story about how God is with Bush, and everyone who dissagrees with you is forsaken! you've stated and restated the same thing OVER AND OVER! It's getting really annoying having to come onto this site that I've grown to love and see that you've posted more propaganda! Just because people are of a different religion, does not make all of them blasphemous bad guys!

Oh. on a different note, you need to hold the shift key down to use the emoticons. Kinda like this. :fdssdf: so, your emoticon should have looked like this,

To everyone else who might respond to this post, I know we agreed not to feed the trolls, but this post was irresistable for me!
