SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld on Tuesday accused critics of the Bush administration’s Iraq and counterterrorism policies of trying to appease “a new type of fascism.”

In unusually explicit terms, Rumsfeld portrayed the administration’s critics as suffering from “moral or intellectual confusion” about what threatens the nation’s security and accused them of lacking the courage to fight back.

Rumsfeld spoke to the American Legion as part of a coordinated White House strategy, in advance of the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, to take the offensive against administration critics at a time of doubt about the future of Iraq and growing calls to withdraw U.S. troops.

Rumsfeld recalled a string of recent terrorist attacks, from 9/11 to bombings in Bali, London and Madrid, and said it should be obvious to anyone that terrorists must be confronted, not appeased.





This is exactly the kind of thing I've come to expect from this administration. I guess if you're critical of the Iraq War, you're unpatriotic and in league with the Islamo-fascists as well. And even better than that, you're suffering from some sort of "moral and intellectual confusion."

Hmmm, I wonder if the intellectual confusion he's talking about would in any way encompass the attacking of a country that had nothing to do with Osama bin Laden or the terrorist attacks of 9/11? Oh well, probably not.

The Republicans are just doing what they do best, they're attacking the patriotism of those who dare to disagree with them. Their blatant politicization of the terrorist attacks is a pathetically desperate attempt to use fear to drive people to the polls in November.

This seems to be the latest strategy coming out of talking point central. It's being parroted by the neo-con apologists everywhere. It's the usual attempt to create a false dichotomy. I don’t know what Rumsfeld was talking about specifically, but morally and intellectually confused sounds about right to describe many of the anti-war arguments. I’ve been telling people on this board for a long time that the kind of stupid comments that the anti-war and the anti-Bush camp uses make themselves look stupid. From the pointless and childless ad hominem, like arguing that Bush is “evil” or a “terrorist,” to flat-out fantasies like arguing that a foiled terrorist attempt wasn’t a terrorist attempt all, but the evil work of Dr. Bush and his “neocon” minions. It’s not that there aren’t some good reasons to disagree with Bush or the war, but the anti-war and anti-Bush types often don’t use them, preferring instead for elaborate fallacies and fantasies. I can’t really disagree with Rumsfeld on that particular phrase.

Your right wing talking points are getting old. Not just because they are repetetive. If you were actually saying something of fact that you had to continually address because people weren't getting it, that would be one thing,

but you and Auraptor and HERO keep returning to the same tired and unsupported arguments that appeal to only those people who don't really care to examine the issue - who merely want to continue to despise us 'terrorist loving heathens.'

That is the same audience that Rumsfeld is appealing to, by using the same kind of nonsense rhetoric, by using one broad brush to characterize everybody who talks bad about the war and Bush, a population that is getting more diverse by the day, instead of doing any factual defending of his and the administration's decisions.

It's pretty lame, and only serves to hold on to the blindest of the Republican base.

While there is some support for partisan dissent, there is almost no support in this country at all for medical dissent--esp. dissent from vaccination dogma.

Neither faction has a monopoly on stupid comments, Finn. The trouble with your argument, is that it implies that logical and sensible opposition to the party-line is really not important. What's important is the absurd knee-jerk flailing around that a lot of people engage in.

But why? There are many on the right (remember Pat Robertson) with absurd and odious oppinions, but to say that everyone on the right is Pat Robertson, or might as well be for the sake of argument, is to dismiss half the nation as fools or madmen. And when the ruling elite dismiss fully half of the nation as fools and madmen, and the other half agrees as you do, Finn, the way is paved for Totalitarianism.

Morally and intellectually confused seems to describe the Right's agenda of fighting fang and nail for an embryo's RIGHT to get born, but after that, not seeming to care a whit if that child has a right to eat, or a right to medical care, or a right to decent education, etc.
i.e. You have a right to live, but no right to live.
