I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

So, is this an "anti-corruption" coup? Best I can figure out the PM is some sort of bazillionaire and that he's been throwing contracts his own way. And that the last elections were kind of sketchy, making people think that possibly the PM wasn't really elected.

Hey, this rings a bell. Now, where have I heard that story before.....?

Far as I know, the E-bay auction was a joke/hoax, but that bein said - there WAS a surplus aircraft carrier sold off to a collective of private interests who wanted to turn it into a bizarre cruise line, dunno how that one panned out.

America sells a lot of surplus too, but it's usually in such piss poor shape nobody wants it.

There are also some homes built out of old silos, for the interested, nuke not included.

You'd be amazed at what can be bought on the free market - I wouldn't mind owning a German aircooled WWII diesel armored car, run that puppy on biodiesel and you got the all-time "end of the world" cruiser, a'la Damnation Alley, heh.

Still, I dun have a problem with such things being out there, cause A.E Van Vogt made that point pretty clear.

My opinion on this is that it's bad. Not as bad as it could end up, but still not right.

I'm actually in the middle of a pseudo debate with some guy over whether Thai military rule is better than a civilian democracy. Yar!

I only hope that it remains bloodless and that democracy is soon restored. As much as I can't stand GWB, I can't say that I'd be excited if a military group decided to overthrow him because they didn't like how things were being run.

The way I heard it, the seller was for real, but the deal was not allowed to go through. I think the seller didn't technically own the item

Thailand has always been a peaceful country, first time I heard of internal turmoil.

COUP? We have this on a weekly basis.
Every time our president makes a speech on TV, some militant persona gets assasinated.
Price for press freedom here is death. We have 200+ unsolved cases, where militant and press people tend to disappear and reappear dead.

Coups are a national sport in Thailand:
Quote:

The revolution of 1973 inaugurated a brief, unstable period of democracy, with military rule being reimposed after a bloody coup in 1976. For most of the 1980s, Thailand was ruled by Prem, a democratically-inclined strongman who restored parliamentary politics. Thereafter the country remained a democracy apart from a brief period of military rule from 1991 to 1992. The populist Thai Rak Thai party, led by prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, governed from 2001 until the 2006 coup.

The beauty of it is, we wouldn't need the military if we could all get off our collective arses and get Congress to impeach ol Dubya. If wishes were horses we'd be eating steak huh?

Someone once said:

"If you want to stop a tank, send a Filipino."

We have successfully overthrown 2 Presidents. One was good but he was a dictator. Ruled for over 20 years. Belief in democracy coupled with prayers and flowers got us out of it.
2nd was an underdog. People who are more intelligent and more conniving and power hungry than he is overthrew him.
And now, with the new government, we're "free".

No one will ever be really satisfied with the government that they have, but being able to express your disatisfaction without dying is a big feat.

It appears that many Thais are taking this about as seriously as I do.
I find that very strange....

(From Reuters Newswire)

Tanks for the memories...
1 hour, 54 minutes ago

Thai coup leaders have banned go-go girls from dancing near tanks and troops on Bangkok streets as a distraction from the serious business of power, a spokesman said on Wednesday.

"It is not appropriate to entertain soldiers while they are on duty," Colonel Acra Tiprote told Reuters after a troupe of 10 women in tight camouflage vests and shorts posed with soldiers and tanks while making a music video.

"People should differentiate between entertainment and seriousness. A coup is not entertaining," Acra said, although the tanks sent in to lead Thailand's first coup in 15 years had turned Bangkok into a carnival-type attraction.

Thais and foreign tourists flocked to the Army Headquarters to take picture with tanks and soldiers. Many gave soldiers flowers or food and drink.

What was that quote ?

"A revolution without dancing is a revolution not worth having!"
