Israel's president 'should face rape charge'

Moshe Katsav, Israel's president, should be charged with rape and sexual harrassment, police have recommended.

"There is sufficient evidence indicating that in several cases ... the president carried out acts of rape, forced sexual acts, sexual acts without consent and sexual harassment," the Israeli police said in a statement.

The recommendation was made during a meeting between police investigators and Meni Mazuz, the Israeli attorney general, who will decided whether the president should face trial.

According to the statement, the police also believe that there is enough evidence to bring charges of fraud and malfeasance in office over the granting of pardons by the president, as well as charges for carrying out illegal wire-taps.

Accusations that Katsav disrupted a police investigation and harassed a witness are still being investigated.

Serious charges

The charges would be the most serious ever brought against a serving Israeli official and Katsav is immune from standing trial unless he is impeached by parliament.

Katsav has denied any wrongdoing and said he has been the victim of a "public lynching without trial or investigation".

Israel Radio and Channel 2 TV said the case against the president is based on complaints by five women who claimed he made unwanted sexual advances toward them during his time as president and before that, when he was a government minister.

Complaints

Complaints by five other women are not being pursued because the statute of limitations has run out, media reports said.

A police investigation was launched earlier this year after a former employee alleged he forced her to have sex under the threat of dismissal.

Police have repeatedly questioned Katsav at his official residence as well as seizing his computer and personal documents.

The position of president in Israel is largely ceremonial and carries very little real authority.

Even the score? Come on dreamtrove. The major difference, and you know it even if you don't want to admit it, is that the republicans play the moral card over and over, and the very people playing it are the ones who are the most perverted.

At least back up the claim that they are evening the score, if you don't want to be lumped in with Auraptor and Hero, for throwing out these hit and run empty attacks, which are the real attempts at evening the score.

I wouldn't agree with the even the score comment either

It's not even the same game

Oral sex with a willing of age co-worker does not equal rape in Israel or chasing underage kids ?

unless you are far to the right maybe ?

KANEMAN

There are scum bags on the right and left. The population is about 50 - 50, right to left. There are cheaters, child molesters, crooks, and liars on both sides. Anyone who says different is an asshole or a liar. So why start a thread about it? Try debating something that matters!Well,it's true.........

I think it's more or less true, something about the mindset of people who want power perhaps, but I think what people are objecting too is Republicans saying "look how immoral these Democrates are! Having sex out of wedlock and cheating on their partners!" While propositioning underage boys, and possibly raping the odd person by the looks of it.

Would you accept the opinion of someone who was beating you while telling you violence was not the answer?

But as I understand American politics it seems to be played more on personalities and on who is being elected, rather than policies, a trend it seems the UK is unfortunatly slowly following. What that means is by saying "they are immoral!" and setting oneself up as more moral erroneously you are 'stealing' votes, so the anger is well founded I think.

But why shouldn't it be reported? When the Republicans have shown themselves to shamelessly play the "look how evil the opposition is" surely the only way of regaining equilibrium is too report the same failings of the opposition?

More insane ramblings by the people who brought you beeeer milkshakes!

Gay sex row hits US Christian leader

Saturday 04 November 2006, 2:03 Makka Time, 23:03 GMT

Haggard has temporarily stepped down as pastor of his church

A US evangelical Christian leader has admitted to buying drugs off a male prostitute and seeking a massage but denied ever having sex with the man or using the drugs.

Ted Haggard, a vocal opponent of gay marriage, resigned as president of the National Association of Evangelicals (NAE) on Thursday after being accused by a male escort of having had a sexual relationship with him and using the drug methamphetamine.

Haggard told a local television channel in his home state of Colorado: "I did call him. I called him to buy some meth. But I threw it away. I was buying it for me but I never used it."

Haggard said that he had sought the man, named as Mike Jones, out at a Denver hotel for a massage but never had sex with him.

Haggard has since temporarily stepped down as senior pastor of the New Life Church in Colorado Springs.

'Praying'

Jones said he went public with his claims on Wednesday to expose what he called the evangelical leader's double standards and denied fabricating his allegations.

"I have said everything that has happened is the truth," he said in a US radio interview.

"I could have made it even worse than it was. But I'm just telling you what happened."

Evangelicals said they were praying for Haggard but were troubled by the situation.

Gary Ledbetter, the director of communications for the Dallas-based Southern Baptists of Texas Convention, said: "This is a blow as the NAE is a significant organisation for us [and] we would always want to lift up a high standard of conduct for church leaders."

Bush support

The NAE is composed of 60 member denominations representing 45,000 churches across the US.

Conservative Christians are a support base for the Republican Party and George Bush, the US president.

Evangelical leaders have been urging followers to vote in next week's US mid-term elections, with polls showing that Republicans could lose control of one and perhaps both houses of Congress.

They have also encouraged conservative voters in eight states, including Colorado, to support proposed amendments to ban same-sex nuptials.

Matt Foreman, executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, said: "They make a career out of defaming gay people and preaching family values, when it's clear that it's just a veneer."
