RIGHTEOUS9

thanks for the reply, and thanks for clearing that up. After I posted I wondered if there was a deferment for expecting fathers, so I should have checked and edited.

I get that the way you spliced my post was to somehow try to show a hypocracy, while you ignored all of the pertinent parts of my post?

I could not in good concience hold somebody accountable for letting somebody else take his place, if that person didn't believe in the war. It's a catch 22, neither choice is good.

Cheney and Bush believed in the war. Why didn't you even touch their hypocracy in your response?

AURaptor gives us,
"A few minor corrections..."
to my earlier post...

And they would be excellent corrections, if factually correct.

"Iraq did have WMD and a WMD program - just not at the levels which were suspected. - Either way, it failed to abide by UN resolutions."

I do think that I recall either Karl Rove or former SecDef Rumsfeld, and once President Bush stating that we had, in fact found either WMD programs or weapons (or once, in Bush's case, "weapons of mass destruction related activities," whatever that means), none of those statements were held up by any of the inspectors, either U.N., or U.S., all of which have stated that there were no ongoing WMD programs, or stockpiles of weaponry.

"Iraq never was a primary suspect in the 9/11 attacks."

While Iraq may have never been a formal "suspect," there were numerous claims that were clearly intended to create a link in the public mind, such as Cheney saying that it was "pretty well confirmed" that an Iraqi intelligence officer met with September 11 hijacker Mohamed Atta shortly before the attacks -- which he later claimed to have not said. Video from "Meet the Press" proves otherwise.

"The "Mission Accomplished " was - Saddam's military was defeated. ( Not to mention that specific carrier's mission was also accomplished )"

It was not, however, an end of "major military operations," as President Bush claimed that it was in his speech upon that carrier -- a much more reasonable interpretation of the banner "Mission Accomplished."

"In many sections of Iraq, the US was indeed welcomed as liberators. Just because the 6 o'clock news didn't show it doesn't mean it's not true."

I recall numerous instances of Vice President Cheney claiming that the U.S. would be welcomed as liberators in Iraq. I do not, however, recall any in which he added the caveats: "...in the Green Zone," "...in many sections of Iraq," or even "...for the first few months of occupation."

"Enlistment rates have not plummeted, but have met or exceeded expected goals. Same goes for re-enlistment."

Some months since the invasion have, met or exceeded expected goals. Those months have not, however, made up for the shortfalls of other months, even with lowering the bar for enlistees.
Additionally, in my opinion, a stop-loss order preventing soldiers from leaving the military when their agreed-upon service term has expired does not equate to higher re-enlistment rates.

The military has also repeatedly lowered its target numbers in order to claim they 'met' their goals.

On the whole, it seems that nations with the draft (USA during Vietnam)- even nations with universal military service (Israel, Soviet Union)have MORE wars rather than fewer.

OR...nations which are more militaristic or have fallen on militaristic times are more likely to institute drafts than non-militaristic nations. In other words, maybe the draft is not causing more wars, but more wars are causing the draft.

But your point is well taken. If Peck's hypothesis is right, instituting the draft should see a reduction in wars, from baseline however high it may start out. And evidence does not seem to support that hypothesis.

Rue--

Good point, thanks for adding it. One of the many facts I remember only after someone reminds me, that I can't usually remember on my own.

I'm sure there are many other points that could have been added to my post, was just trying to hit the high points...
