America loves a winner!

Her racist rant on The View shows what a low life piece of go se she really is !

As a friend of mine says on another board.....
Quote:

Her true colors come out...and she's "surprised" that would be viewed as offensive?

She wouldn't make it very long in our neighborhood (majority are ethnic Chinesa and speak more Mandarin than English). I think Rosie should have to do rehab here in Singapore....I'd love to see the look on her "tolerant" face at the wet market early on a Saturday morning.

What more needs be said ?

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

Rosie: Sorry for mocking Chinese on 'The View'

December 15, 2006
BY ERIN CARLSON ASSOCIATED PRESS
NEW YORK---- Rosie O'Donnell says she's sorry for mocking spoken Chinese on ''The View,'' but an association that represents journalists from diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds, including Chinese American, says it wasn't enough.

In a Dec. 5 segment, O'Donnell joked about how Danny DeVito's recent -- and seemingly drunken -- appearance on the ABC daytime talk show had become international news.

''You know, you can imagine in China it's like 'ching chong, ching chong chong, Danny DeVito, ching chong chong chong, drunk, ''The View,'' ching chong,''' the 44-year-old comedian said.

On Thursday's show, she told the audience: ''To say ching chong to someone is very offensive, and some Asian people have told me it's as bad as the n-word. Which I was like, 'Really? I didn't know that.'''

Karen Lincoln Michel, president-elect of Unity: Journalists of Color Inc., said O'Donnell's remarks ''really didn't sound like an apology to me.''

Lincoln Michel said Unity was waiting for Barbara Walters, who created the show, to respond to a letter asking her to publicly acknowledge that O'Donnell's remarks were ''patently offensive.''

''I think by allowing Rosie O'Donnell's cheap jabs at Chinese Americans to go unchecked, then the network is essentially condoning racial and ethnic slurs,'' Lincoln Michel told the AP in a phone interview.

Unity said it represents more than 10,000 journalists nationwide. ''You know it was never (my) intent to mock,'' O'Donnell said on Thursday's show, ''and I'm sorry for those people who felt hurt or were teased on the playground.''

''But I'm also gonna give you a fair warning that there's a good chance I'll do something like that again, probably in the next week -- not on purpose. Only 'cause it's how my brain works.''

O'Donnell characterized her accent as ''Chinese, Asian, pseudo-Japanese, sounded a little Yiddish ...''

ABC is owned by The Walt Disney Co.

Rosie O. was on some talk show and said that "the news" (presumably Danny Devito was drunk) was known all over the world, then proceeded to imitate a Chinese news broadcast by saying, "Ching chong ching chong, ching ching chong Danny Devito drunk ching chong The View." (or something very close to that.) You can imagine the backlash.

Rosie does that to get attention. She does not care if it is bad or good, as long as you are talking about her. She would offend anybody to get noticed. She will do it again and again. That is her way.

Somewhere there is a great still from "Bell, Book, and Candle" of Kim, cloaked, with Pyewacket on her shoulder. Very swirly and dramatic.

I saw that picture at IMDB. I could not copy it. It is one of my favorite movies too. I googled her and this what I found. I read where her house just burned down and she lost a lot of personal effects. If memory serves me correctly, she became an artist after quit show business. I will watch that Bell Book and Candle tonight, now that you brought it up.

Exactly. This isn't exactly the first time that something like this has happened. I remember a few years back when she really tor into Tom Selleck totally unprovoked. It was ridiculous. After that one, her so called apology was a long the lines of, "I guess we're just both so passionate about what we believe." Basically, no apology at all.

And yes, I know that's old news. It's just that I pay such little attention to what actors say, that's the most recent one I can remember.

For that matter, why do we even care what some delusional half-wit on some morning show for morons says?

I taped BB & C myself many moons ago. Will have to break down and get a DVD one of these days. But I taped so many movies when VHS first came out I have quite a collection. It would cost me a fortune to replace them all with DVD's. So a little at a time.

HKCAVALIER

One of the things that's so poisonous about the whole P.C. mania in this culture is that it demands some kind of sanitized, impersonal perfection of all public figures.

Jesus, people make racist comments all the time in our real lives, don't they? We hear people making racist jokes all the time, don't we? And we either laugh or we walk away. And those of us who laugh are not the devil and those of us who walk away are not members of the Elect.

But when public figures, who are no less human than any of us, no less imperfect, show their failings, the media and the culture at large rush to do battle with the simple reality that people can have some pretty messed up ideas about other people. It's never news unless we're so naive as to be surprised by this stuff.

So people are up in arms because Rosie's apology wasn't good enough. How many people in your day to day life really know how to apologize when they do something really bad? Why the heck should we expect Rosie to be any better than the rest of humanity?

Rosie's "joke" was tremendously insensitive. Of course it was. I'm sure that's part of the humor of it. Rosie is not a particularly sensitive person. In order for her to make an acceptable apology she would have to suddenly become much more sensative than she obviously is. That kind of thing doesn't tend to happen.

Of the three infamous celebrity racists we've made so much of lately, I have the most hope for Michael Richards actually getting anything out of his experience because he seems genuinely demolished by his outburst, while Rosie and Mel give us the moral equivalent of "sorry, my bad" and call it good. I think Rosie and Mel have made the typical choice. Michael Richards, not so much.

@HKCavalier:

You'd have a point if the US was a society that made sense. But, by your own admission, it isn't.

Basically, what people are wanting is that in her apology, she actually uses the word, "I apologize" or "I'm sorry" or something similar. Not her typical, implying that she might be sorry but not actually come out and say it. If her PR people was in any way shape or form competent, they would have gotten her to do this.

Which brings up another point. She habitually does this. I'd understand and not say a thing if it only happened once or twice. BUT, it's far more than once; it is a regular occurrence by any account.

One could liken this to getting charged with a felony by means of committing several misdemeanors.

Also, it is just a fact that people in her position hold a great amount of influence over there viewer-ship. This means that they have a great amount of responsibility to use that influence wisely.

Now, I'm going to be the first to agree that this shouldn't be the case. And I am very disturbed that this is the reality of the situation. But it is just that, the reality of the situation.

Basically, if someone can't keep there mouth shut when it comes to racist remarks, etc for about an hour or so a day, then they don't belong on TV.

But Sigma, hasn't Rosie done just that for many, many, many such hours? I mean, she wouldn't have a career otherwise.

I have a challenge: is there a single over-exposed celebrity--that is someone who's on tv every day, sometimes on several different shows on different networks--who hasn't made an ass of themselves at least a couple times? Now, some one here will prolly come up with one or two, but such people would be in the extreme minority.

Maybe this is a can of worms or something, but Southpark, Carlos Mencia and the greatly missed Dave Chappelle have all made racist remarks regularly and often. In fact, a friend of mine saw Carlos Mencia performing here in Seattle recently and he was heckled by some black college students and he quoted Michael Richards' tirade at them verbatim. My friend said it got the biggest laughs of the evening.

So, is it okay to express racism, as long as you're really, really smart about it?

But, the opportunity hasn't exactly presented itself every day. Arguably, when the opportunity does present itself, she takes it.

All her not going around and making random racist comments proves, is that she isn't a total moron.

I think that what people are talking about here isn't that she's making an ass out of herself, but the specific way in which she has done it. Namely, the whole racist aspect.

There is also that whole thing that I'm not saying that people like her form a significant percentage of the "celebrity" population. So, why you bring this up is beyond me. I'm talking about one specific person.

This brings up the whole, you can be racist and it's ok if you're part of that race, hypocrisy. There is also the fact that most comedy makes fun of race, sexual orientation, politics, religion, class and society. For some reason people find it funny.

I imagine it's that "we can laugh at ourselves" thing. That is, as long as we know that the guy is joking around it's all good (with limits of course).

I just watched Michael Richards audible snap at thatvideosite.com and I don't think that he was joking (or at least he was partially serious). That, or it's because he's white. So, that made it not ok.

But, when Carlos Mencia did it, he was seen to be taking care of a heckler AND making fun of Michael Richards at the same time. Plus there's the whole thing that he's a minority himself.

I'd say that it is never ok to express racism. BUT, it is ok to make fun of it, or use it as long as people know you're just making a joke. Because as soon as people think that you're serious, if even in part, it becomes not cool.

There is also the whole, everyone has there own lines that you can't cross thing. Hell, Michael Richards snap might have gone over very well with a different audience. We'll never know though.

Just b/c you replied to my post, I think that I'll make something explicitly clear. I am in no way shape or form defending any aspect of what Rosie does. Nor am I defending any aspect of any other person that I've brought up. Quite frankly, I find what has happened unacceptable on every level.
