Venezuela's National Assembly has given initial approval to a bill granting President Hugo Chavez the power to rule by decree for 18 months.
Mr Chavez said he wants to approve "revolutionary laws" to enact sweeping political, economic and social changes.

He has said he wants to nationalise key sectors of the economy and scrap limits on the terms a president can serve.

I'm not sure if this is going to work out as well as the Venezuelans hope, but it's their choice.

Any comments?

Wow.

This sounds incredibly like the history of Rome during the rule of Caesar.

Maybe Chavez will be stabbed to death by his peers?

Hard to accuse the President of similar actions when you've already voted for and approved his actions.

Chavez is nothing more than a pimp.....who else wears red & purple suits? He's trying to be the Castro of the the new millenium....soon Venezuela will be a totalitarian, socialistic state, and the average Venezuelan will see all their property rights, civil rights, human rights vanish right before their eyes as they're hauled off to jail.

This tyrant wannabee just SHUT DOWN the ONLY TV station that EVER dared to criticize him....so much for liberal/socialism free speech. The jails and torture chambers are being filled up with all who oppose his insanity. But I'm sure none of this bothers his American buddies like Belafonte & Glover, or his great pal,the Iranian Hitler-clone Achmedassholeijhad.

Don't cry for me ...Venezuela...you elected this monkey.

Wonder if Cindy Sheehan will lead a protest down there (she's always welcome in Chavezuela). Come on liberals here's your chance for a real protest:

Come on everybody lets chant:

Not going to outright defend Chavez's closing of that television station because I only know bits and pieces about the nation and haven't done enough research to actually come down with a position,

but before I condemned him for it, I'd have to understand some things better. If we take Chavez's word for it, the U.S. has been funding the opposition. If we take the U.S.'s rhettoric towards Venezuela into account it may not be that crazy a conspiracy theory. Or maybe it is, I'm not sure.

assuming it were true...

money is power. You can't honestly argue that the rules of a democracy in the face of vastly unbalanced wealth to sway that democracy is a genuine democracy. And if money were truly coming from foreign sources with the intent to destabilize Chavez's Presidency, with the intent of furthering foreign interests over domestic ones, I can see a compelling reason to have such a station shut down.

Now, on the other hand, if this were all true, its been going strong now for a long time, and Chavez has not had a problem getting elected or winning the will of the people, so under such circumstances, it does seem like it may be an extreme approach to a problem that may not have been a problem...it may even be a tyrranical approach.

So far I'm unconvinced either way. Maybe somebody who knows more about the political situation in Venezuela could explain the situation to me, in more depth.

Any of our anti-capitalist, socialist, or anti-neoliberal members want to chime in?

I have a vote and I'm not afraid to use it!

Probably not now, after you characterized those who might disagree with you as "anti-capitalist, socialist, or anti-neoliberal".

PS You could have neutrally asked if there were any other responses. Instead you posted a gratuitous attack on the many posters here who don't share your views. That was neither smart nor fair.

I characterize Chavez as anti-capitalist, socialist, and anti-neoliberal, based on his actions and statements. At the Mercosur Summit in Rio he's caused some concern because he supports "socialism for the 21st century" and during the conference said "I believe that capitalism is the road to the destruction of the world".
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/6281417.stm
I know I've seen his remarks against "neoliberalism" somewhere, but can't recall where just now.

I was assuming that anyone who agrees with him would share his views to a certain extent.

If you think that his methods are going to work, I'd be glad if you would explain how. I'm not to sure how I feel about nationalization of telecom businesses who criticize the government and rule by decree in what Chavez insists is a democratic country.

What?! Like we’re surprised!

This is where socialism goes. You give the government control over the means of production, and totalitarianism is pretty much waiting right around the corner from that point on.

Nihil est incertius vulgo, nihil obscurius voluntate hominum, nihil fallacius ratione tota comitiorum.

Nothing is more unpredictable than the mob, nothing more obscure than public opinion, nothing more deceptive than the whole political system.

It was all fun and games when this guy was calling Bush the devil to the U.N. "the smell of sulphur" and all that. But this is scary. This nut is now ruling his country by decree and unlike Castro he has massive oil reserves. This is bad.

As opposed to a nut ruling his country via signing statements, having control over one of the worlds most powerful militaries ?

For me it boils down to this.

"Is THEIR nutter any scarier then OUR nutter ?"

*shrug* I don't think so, personally.

Chavez may be a wackjob, the jury's still out, far as I am concerned, but unlike ours.. he seems a competent one.

That and I don't see him clamoring to invade someone else's county, neither.
