Mayan Priests To Purify Site Of "Bad Spirits" After Bush Visit

AP | JUAN CARLOS LLORCA | March 9, 2007 09:11 AM

Mayan priests will purify a sacred archaeological site to eliminate "bad spirits" after
President Bush visits next week, an official with close ties to the group said Thursday.

"That a person like (Bush), with the persecution of our migrant brothers in the United States, with the wars he has provoked, is going to walk in our sacred lands, is an offense for the Mayan people and their culture," Juan Tiney, the director of a Mayan nongovernmental organization with close ties to Mayan religious and political leaders, said Thursday.

The should offer up services to cities and towns in the US. I'm sure a lot of folks would pay them to delouse their communities after Bush makes a visit.

Ya know, it’s painfully obvious – at least to some – that our president has all the tact of a bug. I really don’t like having to complain about the guy so much, but he is the nations figurehead and as such I believe he should conduct himself with a little dignity.

Remember the time he couldn’t find the exit at a press conference in Beijing, or cursing with a mouth full of food while talking to Tony Blair at last year’s G-8 Summit, and at the same Summit trying to forcibly give Germanys Chancellor Merkel a backrub (she reacted like someone had just put an octopus down her blouse), or how about “Fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again."

And then there’s the time he mangled a G chord on a guitar during the New Orleans disaster - there is an endless string of gaffs by the man who represents our country abroad, but the pièce de résistance has to be reading “My Pet Goat” during the 9-11 attacks.

Ok I can hear you now, “that’s just petty and vindictive”… but I actually feel embarrassed for him at times and a little sorry for him too, but when you think about it, is it really so hard to understand why he, (and the United States by association), has such an unpopular standing in other countries.

Some of you will say these things don’t matter and that this is just sour grapes, you are certainly entitled to your opinion, (as I am mine - which is all this is), but I honestly think dignity and at least some semblance of intelligence are important to the office of the president.

In a few months there will be a change (can’t come too soon for me), and I for one hope that whoever is elected, at the very least, doesn’t drop his dog while the cameras are rolling.

Well..... I quite enjoy a Bush bash, but I was a little disappointed when I got here. This guy is pretty much full of shit. All it takes is one majorly erronius statement and the complete thought gets tossed out the window. I'm all for his comment about Bushole provoking wars, but if anything he's been better to illegal mexicans than any president we've ever had. The silent invasion progresses as we speak and nobody does anything about it, aside from the one or two stories that will pop up here and there about factory workers being rounded up and sent back to placate the masses who are pissed off about illegals getting free healthcare and not paying into Social Security and FED tax. Boo Hoo..... If you want to be a citizen, get in line like the rest of the world does and how my great grandparents did.

If Bush, or any politicians for that matter, were at all serious about keeping illegals out, they would have rounded up the lot of them and shipped them back when they protested in the streets and shut cities down months ago. It's not as if they didn't have two weeks advance notice to prepare for that.

I still think Bush is an asshole, in this instance, for the exact opposite reason Mr. Tiney says.

I'm not sure going back to a policy that was in place when your great-grandparents emigrated would meet with your approval. We pretty much had open borders up until 1917 (unless you were ethnic Chinese - who had been excluded from any immigration with the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act). Up until 1917, the basic requirement was that you were healthy (oh, and not an anarchist agitator after 1901). In 1917 a literacy requirement was added, the first quotas start showing up in 1921 and then all immigration got shut down during the Depression.

So, if your great-grandparents got here before 1917, they passed the physical and came on in. Now we could revert to that policy and just start giving physicals on the border. But something tells me that the vast majority of Americans wouldn't go for that.

Real good point SoupCatcher. I wish I knew more about my family. I'm only 27 myself and my Grandparents met in the 40's, so it is entirely possible they came after 1917, but I really couldn't say. It would have been right around that time I suppose.

I definately think that learning to at least speak and understand English should be a requirement. Why should we have to change everything here to cater to them if they want to get here so badly? Also they should be able to read enough to sufficiently read our street and warning signs and such so we don't find ourselves with speed limit signs in 8 different languages someday.

I was a a home depot a few years ago. It happens to be in a neighborhood which has slowly become a prodominantly mexican neighborhood over the last 20 or so years. I bought a preassembled glass block window. It had tear away instructions below them which were fasened to the bulk racks by two twist ties, making it impossible to spin around so the other side on top. Take a guess which language this english/spanish instruction booklet was facing the top.

I nearly flipped my lid. I gave the manager a good piece of my mind and told him that I'd never shop in his home depot again, and I'm forced now to drive 30 minutes out of my way whenever I do some work on my Grandma's now because I will never shop in the Home Depot 5 minutes from her house again.

Nope... I think that illegals have thrived during this administration.

Umm... Bush has been the illegal's best friend! He's done just about everything EXCEPT persecute 'the migrant worker'. Wars ? That'd be ONE war, I believe. I don't care who you are, no one can deny our legitimate right to invade Afghanistan. That's above all reproach. You want to bicker about Iraq ? Fair enough. But not t'other.

Weren't the Mayans the folks who engaged in human sacrifice ?
Quote:

So, apparently the Mayans weren't this peaceful, almost serene people that the 19th century scientists first thought. Learning from the hieroglyphs and archaeological legwork, the disposition of the ancient Mayan had to be revaluated. The Mayan society was a strict theocratic hierarchy, where the priests held great power for their connection with the gods. Warfare did play an essential part of Mayan society, and yes, they did practice human sacrifice. It is believed that they sacrificed captured enemy warriors and ball players as well as people of their own tribe, going willingly to the World of the Gods. Many offerings and sacrifices, human and others, have been found in cenotes, the fresh water sinkholes found throughout the Yucatán

I think they've got a few hundred years purifying their OWN bad spirits before they fret over their great white brothers to the North.

Not that I feel a need to defend AURaptor or anything, but I hate it when arguments get started because of miscommunication, so here's the way I saw it:

Mayan priests: Bush provoked wars.
AURaptor: Maybe he started one war, but the other one (Afghanistan) was legitimate. Hence no plural.

I happen to think AURaptor's right on this one, and I also think those comments by the priests make them seem like nothing more but media-seekers.

Typically, isn't all a country have to do these days is bash Bush and they get into the media?

I'm not going to hop into this whole political thing...he'll be out soon anyway, and the country is still here, as far as I know, so all in all, I don't care. But really, isn't bashing Bush kinda...uncool now? It seems like everyone I know and their mother has not only an unkind word, but a whole freaking political speech about everything he's done bad for our country. I admit, he has no tact, no grace, and an IQ that wouldn't make a decent earthquake...but I just wish people would move on to new topics. Again, no offense to anyone here, I'm just stating my opinion when it comes to the subject in general.

So...cookies, anyone?

It is always the right of the employees to complain about the shortcomings of management.

There's not much you can do when you're at the bottom. When management shows no sign of learning from past mistakes and seems determined to make additional mistakes and you know that the people who pay for those mistakes will be you and all the people you know one of the few things you do have control over is bitching.

And you want people to stop doing that?

It's the, "Shut up and take it like a man." school of thought. Or the, "Thank you sir, may I have another." I could probably throw something in there about an absence of vaseline but I think you get the point.

I know that that's an old English public school thing, but it's also an American frat house , pledge week thing. And that fits my estimate of GWB perfectly.
He got into Harvard ? Yale? wherever it was? as a legacy-- because of who his parents were, not because of any ability of his own.

He's the kind of guy who wouldda hung out on the lawn of the frat house, with a keg of beer, beating the pledges, and making the freshmen write his papers and either take his exams for him , or give him crib sheets with the answers on 'em.

Baby, Jack:

Where as you two never look for a fight. Thanks for elequently proving you both are much worse than me, since I never personally attacked anyone, where as you did.

Poetry indeed "We just have to jump into to say you're an arsehole", you guys give arsehole new definition, and indeed make me look meek mild and agreeable in comparision, thanks .

Hypocrite is the term.

More insane ramblings by the people who brought you beeeer milkshakes!

Sorry Cit.... your response here that started it was pretty trollish and I honestly don't believe that you misread the post. Nobody else did.... even people who you I'm sure you would waste no time in telling how superior your intelligence is if they happen to argue with you about anything. You seem to have been the agressor here and have tried repeatedly to get under Auraptors skin. I think it's funny that the people who most often accuse others of trollish behavior are guilty of the same. We hate in others that which we hate in ourselves they say.

And "ergo"..... wow man. True genius. When you use words like ergo that only brainiac douchebags use there's really no way to lose any argument. It's true, I've read it on Digg.

Methinks you were looking for a fight and you got it. Congrats Cit, on shortening another life by making people so pissed off at you over nothing that their only recourse is to pull out their hair.... since they made it illegal to kill somebody just beacuse they're a pompus, self-righteous asshole.

I agree. This is the most honest post I have ever read on this board. Kudos Jack. In my opinion CitZ is about as pleasant as vaginal discharge. And his "I never personally attacked anyone" is a fucking joke...What an asshole......
