I think this is a good insight, Geezer. This is sort of the message board equivalent of the single-issue voter. But I think that sometimes this is done innocently, and sometimes not. Some people see it as a contribution to the overall discussion, whereas others...well, they just want to force their agenda into the spotlight.

Unfortunately, as noted in another thread, some of us have pretty set opinions of others of us. You begin to expect an argument rather than a discussion, and get too touchy. When I get this way I usually try to just not deal with the other person for a while.

Right, and this is why I would love for us to get above the camps we seem to have divided ourselves into. There are some people on the boards who, if they see person X, will just lay into that person for no other reason than that that person is on their personal shit list. Who knows how they got there? Some people are so bad that they will actually follow their person X around the boards being snarky and insulting. And I wish that we could get beyond that. Of course, the more innocent thing is something like, "Oh yeah, there's so-and-so who always disagrees with me. He's going to do it again any minute now." Talk about priming the pump for flame wars.

"if lefties were thought to be lazy, imbecilic lawbreakers, and persecuted accordingly, it's pretty clear that they're the Other to the righties. They've been dehumanized"

Wrong. They have been generalized or at worst stereotyped. If the consensus is that lefties are *fill in the blank*, there probably is a reason for that generalization. The fact that righties are aware of the lefties shortcummings- does not DEHUMANIZE the lefties. The righties still know the lefties are human....just shittier, weaker, or both....You sound like a fag parent that doesnt believe in keeping score at Little League, because it may hurt the losing children's FEEEEEELINNNNNGSSS!!!...get a life. I think you're right about this. One of my favorite quotes is from Anthony de Mello: "We see people and things not as they are but as we are."

That's one of the things I like about metro D.C. You are going to interact with other cultures, religions, etc. It's real difficult to find yourself stereotyping any particular type of folks when you work, play, eat, shop, whatever, with them.

One of the problems we have here in WWW world is that we never get to see the people we interact with as whole people. We just get a few random bits of information which don't give us a true picture of them in their entirety. And what we do see is usually something that they, and we, feel contentious about and are likely as not to disagree on. If we all got together for a drink without knowing who is who, we'd probably get along fine.

Isn't it nice? I try to tell people about this experience on occasion, and they think I'm being some kind of culture snob or something. You just don't realize the warping effect TV can have until you've been away from it for a bit. Then you can't believe you ever wasted so much time with it.

What I'm suggesting is that we all need to see each other as human beings first, because we all see someone as the Other.

Excellent point.

I sincerely hope I've convinced at least a couple folk that Anarchists are not necessarily bomb-throwing maniacs out to mercilessly destroy everything in sight.

One advantage to being so far outside most of the usual norms is having a more distant perspective.. while that makes it a little harder to get across to folk sometimes, it does give a wider range of understanding and allows for better communication with a more diverse range of folk.
(PN being about as diverse as it gets, and there's been something close to actual intelligent communication there a time or two.)

One might benefit from taking a step or two back and looking at things from a wider angle sometimes.

Just sayin...

I'm finding this thread very interesting and expression of my feelings and apprehensions about RWED board for a while now. I think this polarization, trolling, and back and forth baiting is very disconcerting to folks who just happen to stumble onto the boards and are taken aback by some of the vitriol and intense emotions that often get expressed here. I know I think twice, thrice, and four times before posting anything generally because I don't want to be sucked into the pit of divisivness. I have to wonder how many others who may never post here feel the same.

I find much of the problem could be alleviated if before you post you ask the simple question, "am I talking at the person I'm responding to or am I talking to them?" If you are just talking at them, you aren't interested in a response and it's somewhat counter to the purpose of a discussion forum IMHO.

Great discussion for the most part! Thanks for keeping it going.

Summoned, I appear.

So we were supposed to respond within the 5 minutes between insult and your response? We got a life off RWED, you know.

But anyway, I agree that calling anyone retarded is an insult to both that person and folk with developmental disabilities.

As to cable, I enjoy BBC America, Discovery, History Channel, Versus, and a few others.

Unfotunately, my daughter and SO just LOVE company watching TV. And for some strange reason that I can't fathom it's not enough to keep each other company, they need my company! The PC is in the same room, so I tried doing something else ... anything else, like taxes (:wry smile:).... but no, I have to sit there and watch the boob toob with them. So I get to watch some shows that I like, like House and a lot of shows I don't like, and ghoulie films, cartoons, and... you get the picture. (so to speak)

Please, someone rescue me!

Try reading. With a little practice you can completely shut out the TV, and still nod or exclaim about something every once and a while to make yourself appear involved in watching the show. Also useful for speakerphone conference calls.

I wanted to psot this because I thought it was insightful. Been on several bbx of various kinds: health-related, technical, political, gnl discussion (but never a fan site (b4!) and wherever you go it's all the same:

Flamebait is a message posted to a public Internet discussion group, such as a forum, newsgroup or mailing list, with the intent of provoking an angry response (a "flame") or argument over a topic the troll often has no real interest in. (This is not to be confused with tweaking someone.)

There are various motives or explanations for this behavior. The most popular is the desire for attention and the desire for entertainment at the expense of others. Posted flamebait can provide the posting party with a controlled trigger-and-response setting in which to engage in conflicts and indulge aggressive behavior anonymously, without facing the consequences those behaviors would certainly bring to bear in real life. In other instances, flamebait may be used to reduce a forum's use by angering forum users. Especially, a hate group is very vulnerable to flamebaits.

It is often hard to determine who is really responsible for the degradation of a reasonable discussion into a flamewar. Someone who posts a contrary opinion in a strongly focused discussion forum may be easily labeled a "baiter", "flamer" or "troll". Therefore, it seems especially important to make the rules and focus of a discussion forum public to avoid misconceptions about its accepted use.

Taking the bait refers to someone who responds to the original message regardless of whether they are aware the original message was intended to provoke a response. Often when someone takes the bait, others will point out to them YHBT for "You have been trolled".

Heh.

FYI - I don't watch TV at all, sometime around the beginning of the OJ Trial circus it just sickened me to the point where I threw the cursed thing out the back window after a rough day and really, REALLY didn't wanna hear that tabloid trash going on and on and on.

I've never regretted doing that, not once.

I saw an advert for Firefly on someone else's TV right after playing Privateer for a couple hours, and it was the similarity that drew my interest - and the F*X killed it.

If there was anything worth watching ON it, I might bother, but really their ain't.
