I'll start, and I apologize for my tone, what a load of shit. I can't count the number of times the words limitations, gaps, hard to discern, probably, and based on modelling are used. What they should say is 'we know the earth is warming, but we can't really pin this on us dirty rotten no good humans'. This is just the summary report. I can't wait to see the data that allows them to use such terms as high confidence, very high confidence, and then have the audacity to put values( 9out of 10 chance of being correct..etc) on that shit. I mean PLEASE....and the sheeple on the left are going to eat this shit up. I can smell their breath now....phew! The earth's climate history is there, so everyone should know that it varies greatly...always has. To spend all this money and make policy based on normal cycles is asswipe absurd. It is always something with these PROFESSIONAL alarmists. First it was the earth is cooling, now it's warming....PLEASE...Hasn't it been shown that the increase in temp. is based on the activity of the sun? The chart that I saw about solar radiation and temp seemed to correlate more than co2 and temp. I guess if we blame the sun for our problem there would be nothing we could do to stop it, and if that was the case we wouldn't give the billions to research climate change. Not one person on that report would want that. Would they?...of course not. The more dire they claim the situation to be, the more money THEY get..PAAAALEASE! In the end it will become perfectly clear in respect to motivation....CARBON TAX!!! CARBON TAX!!! CARBON TAX!!!!.....As some famous black man once noted....."It's all about the Benjamin's"

We only use that tactic when it comes to wars. The threat for some has to be right in front of their faces to believe it.

Is that "trillions" figure from a theory like the ones on Climate Change or a forecast like the ones on Climate Change.

Yes, over millions of years. For most, no matter how smart people are, just cannot grasp or have no reason to grasp, time on that sort of scale. We will not live that long and Earth WILL get “used up” for human needs long before any geologic cycle ends at this rate.

I think a lot of us are fully aware we don't have ALL the answers about climate change. Anyone says they do, left or right, steer clear. For me, it is more about CONSERVATION and PREPAREDNESS. We need people to think about it, at least. Let's not talk about all of Earth's millions of years of history. (unless we are truly learning from it) On this matter, and only for now, Let’s talk about our brief and KNOWN human history. Regardless of climate change we have managed to destroy a great number of species, habitats, and used up resources all over the planet. Eventually a grand movement on conservation will be sparked, even if no leader steps up and makes it so, it will be a necessity.

It is hard for me to say I don't care about a generation or two in the future. (yet, that seems to be the argument for the war, "the future", that’s when we will see the real results) Those who support the war and discredit the ENTIRE argument for global warming are just plain contradictory on their purpose. We can learn from the research no matter the EXACT cause. Just because you cannot see something doesn’t mean it is not there. That kind of general statement most everyone can agree on. But it is the size and importance where the grey area sits. How big is Al Qaeda and radical Islam, prolly get many theories on that. Just like climate change. So, we need to stop looking for an absolute answer and use common sense.

Believe me, I didn't miss your point here. But what should we spend our billions on? We will spend it on something. Paying for non renewable resources to get over here. (whether it be protection, shipping costs, or base barrel cost). We are smarter than that. If someone told you we have a couple of options, develop an efficient way of gathering wind for power OR rebuilding a natural gas rig in the an increasingly “at risk” site in hurricane territory that will one day eventually run out of gas. There’s your PAAAALEASE!

Speaking of human history (and very recently, I might add) people freaked out when electric poles were first put up and not to mention “Oh no, gas in a car, it might blow up” So, most pioneers of energy didn’t get discouraged by the “old timer, my daddy did it this way, talk”

Will there be massive misuses of funding for low carbon research, of course! Isn't gross misuse going on right now, for like, evrrything. Take a look at scams during Katrina, Andrew, and Floyd. Horrible people do horrible things. Does that discredit an entire idea or set of people, NO.

Why has this argument become just that "an argument" for the sake of left and right grandstanding. ...and NOT in what we really need. Oh Damn, I guess I should look at recent human history again.

Big issue here. Scientists can gain some footing in the political arena. That scares the crap out of the BS artists. I think the sheeple here are most of us that are being used by the uber-rich.

I know what we need Color-coded alerts for TV. Today is ultra hot! Global Warming: Code Red. Alarmists need alarms. But maybe I have seen that before.

So, yes, really "The earth's climate history" is over millions of years.

Besides, my post was mostly about using common sense about our needs. Not about the specifics of the climate. Many scientists have already done that job for me. Just some are refusing to accept their results. So, I was attempting to try another approach without a gazillion percentages and numbers.

"William M. Gray pioneered the concept of "seasonal" hurricane forecasting — predicting months in advance the severity of the coming hurricane season. Gray's prognostications, issued since 1983, are used by insurance companies to calculate premiums. [1]
He is Emeritus Professor of Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University (CSU), and head of the Tropical Meteorology Project at CSU's Department of Atmospheric Sciences. Gray is noted for his forecasts of Atlantic hurricane season activity. Professor Gray served as a weather forecaster for the United States Air Force, and as a research assistant in the University of Chicago Department of Meteorology. He joined Colorado State University in 1961. He has been advisor of over 70 Ph. D. and M. Sc. students. His team has been issuing seasonal hurricane forecasts since 1984.

After the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season, Professor Gray announced that he was stepping back from the primary authorship of CSU's tropical cyclone probability forecasts, passing the role to Philip J. Klotzbach. Gray cited that he was devoting more time to the issue of global warming."

Professor Gray came out today with this quote...."Al Gore is a gross alarmist and what he has been doing is irresponsible" - CNN Headline News.

So, put that in your pipe and smoke it. The list continues to grow on the side calling bullshit.

So rather than going on generally accepted truisms, try looking at the evidence that man has changed something basic about the earth. From there you can see how since it has been done in the past, it could actually happen in the future.

Once you've recalibrated your sense of what is and isn't possible based on real-world examples, you will have a truer perspective on global warming.

No, the Earth has been here far longer than we have. Our monitoring of the so called Ozone hole is recent in that Earth history. How can you convince me that so called hole does not expand and shrink over thousands of years?

If by some chance we have caused this. How can you convince me that our activity over the last few hundred years can be simply reversed. Even if everyone on this planet went back to living in caves we cannot change the outcome of climactic change. Just a few short years ago we were warned of an oncoming Ice Age, now it's global warming.

Mankind will adapt to whatever is coming or we will Die. It's that simple.

You all can wring your hands and cry all you want but I will continue to live my life. As will your hero Algore. You don't for one minute think he will give up his jets, cars or huge electricity sucking house. Do you...

"Our monitoring of the so called Ozone hole is recent in that Earth history. How can you convince me that so called hole does not expand and shrink over thousands of years?"
One way to know this is true is that CFCs under the proper conditions as found in the stratosphere do catalytically destroy ozone. (In case you don't know what a catalyst does, it causes a chemical reaction without being changed or used-up itself.) I take it by your post you do not have even HS chemistry? If so, it would make the rest hard to explain except in the simplest way.

"How can you convince me that our activity over the last few hundred years can be simply reversed."
If someone is punching you, do you lean into it to feel it more, or lean away to feel it less? Would you prefer to make global warming worse and sooner, or less and later?

"a few short years ago we were warned of an oncoming Ice Age"
I never heard of it and I've been in the business a long, long time. Do you have a credible source? Can you post a link or quote? It's not that I think you're lying, but this sounds like a merit-less talking point that gets repeated over and over.

"Mankind will adapt to whatever is coming or we will Die"
Would you rather not HAVE to face that?

"he will give up his jets, cars or huge electricity sucking house. Do you..."
Now, the reason I thought that your quote above was one of those fake talking points was because this one definitely is. If you have any interest in the truth, let me know and we can discuss this further.

Excuse me, I am an uneducated moron.

If you've been "in the business a long time" then tell me just how far you expect us to go to reduce this so called global warming. Don't forget all the natural causes as well. Volcanoes, trees, animal life.

This planet was here long before we were and will be here long after we're gone. I intend to enjoy my life. I see all this as simply another way for certain people to get empowered. You will not change my mind as I suspect I will not change yours.

On the one hand you admit to being ignorant - on the other to having your mind made up (based on nothing in particular it seems).

When you go in to buy a car do you ask for 'the red one'? Or 'any two door you have'? I suspect you use more judgement than that day to day.

What is it about gobal warming that makes you run from learning a little bit about the topic?

Your title says it all..

"You can see anything, if you use the right filters ..."

I'm bored with this now.. I think I'll go out to my 1973 car and release all the remaining R12 refrigerant.

So why do you chose the filters of ignorant people? Is it a matter of pride with you, or what?

I hope you've had fun. You can go high-five your buddies and tell em how you defeated the ignorant rube that doesn't believe in the same thing you do.

Maybe Algore will give you a gold star.

Meanwhile, I don't give a rats ass.

ciao

MARTIANWAY

Holy f**k. You guys really go for the jugular around here. I'm gonna do my own little weak punt vaguely in favor of the Al Gore agenda, and hope my head doesn't get torn off.

Okay, people. Sin of all sins, I have no f**king clue if global warming is terrifically real and something I should be fretting about as I speak or an incredibly large, elaborate and well-thought-out hoax perpetrated for some pretty esoteric reasons. I tend to lean on the side of "it's probably real" for two pretty stupid reasons:

A) All the scientists I like (who are basically a lot of nutters who write for PopSci) say it's real, and right now, the PopSci people are as close as I'll get to an actual lab or (God forbid) an IPCC report. If somebody wants to spoonfeed me information, though, I'd be happy to read it (or not read it, if the person attempting to spoonfeed me is simultaneously attempting to rip out my jugular).

B) What's the point of tricking people into thinking the earth is warming up, if it's not?

Anyhoo, even if climate change is a load of hooey (which would be a relief) I'm still in favor of most of the happy happy/renewable energy/reduce carbon dependance/whee initiavtives because, assuming they're implemented, we (Americans) get a load of incentive to turn our economy from one that's run on about 40% oil (not counting the gasoline we use in cars) to one run on way, way, less. Economy that runs on way, way less oil = no more dependance on foreign oil = no more having to suck up to countries with lots of oil (Saudia Arabia) + no more having to buy oil from insanely creepy places like Iran and Russia.

I know one thing we did right
was the day we started to fight
Keep your eyes on the prize,
hold on, hold on...

Oh, when I asked Thundar why he prefered ignorance it was in response to this "Excuse me, I am an uneducated moron." and "You will not change my mind ..."

BTW, well, even if you claim ignorance you hang your hat on people who ARE knowledgeable, rather than on the vocal ignoramuses of the world.

S'wenyways, to get back to the topic of the thread, it was nice to read today in LCGC something I've been saying all along "Science doesn't offer certainty."

Anyone who claims to be certain isn't talking science, they're talking religion or opinion, or both. All those caveats in the IPCC reports are important b/c, if nothing else, they distinguish it as a scientific work rather than the ignorant vodoo in most media. And anyone complaining about caveats, limitations and alternatives is displaying their own ignorance about science.
