"Keep the Shiny side up"

Most of the human race is slated to go to that "warmer" place. It doesn't matter in the end how good or bad you are. The decision where you go was already decided billions of years ago, so I say that if you are a believer in God, then it's okay if you snub your nose at him and go covet your neighbors wife or husband. while you are at it go rob a bank, and lie as much as you feel you need to do because you are going to go to hell any ways so you might as have fun and earn it.

Myself, after work I'm going to go find a kid and snatch candy away from it just for the joy of watching the little bastard cry; I find I like making people cry. It's fun being the bully and victimizing others. *Cough*

I'm feeling hateful of the Universe right now, so sue me...

Why Geezer, are you setting up an online war here?
Count me IN!!

Just kidding...I am happy his soul has been released from his earthly vessle, perchance to go where it can be a source for good in the next life.

Your reaction here masks the big heart you try so hard to deny. I feel the good in you; the conflict.
Feel better, m'lady.

Are you disappointed that

a) Jerry Falwell died
b) Chris has his hands in his pants
c) I pointed out that Chris has his hands in his pants
d) Chris thinks it's funny to have his hands in his pants
or
e) You didn't point out Chris' hands in his pants first?

Because if the answer is "a"...

I'm a strong believer in Karma.
Mr Falwell was not a nice person.
I'm not going to rejoice that he's dead. That's not nice.
I'm sure as Heck not gonna throw myself on his pyre, either.

By the By, it is also fun to point at Chris and laugh at his spelling errors. But that's another site, another story.

Oh, dear. One of those.

Are you aware of the whole "Dear Buddha, give me a plastic rocket" joke from Serenity, a movie starring Nathan Fillion and based upon a short lived television series called Firefly?

Well, it all starts there, and trickles...as they say...downhill.

*pats BDN on the shoulder*

Found out less than an hour ago, my dad said good (and he is old world Catholic, we're talkin Roman Catholic here so that tells you something about the negative impact the guy had on the world and religion in general) And I replied how I would LOVE to be there when he had that final meeting with God, how hilarious it would be to see this man who spread so much distrust and hate in the name of religion had to explain himself to The Big Guy. I laughed and laughed. As they say, the road to hell was paved with good intentions.

Boogah Fallwell. Boogah.

Voicing pleasure at the death of another human being whose only crime is not agreeing with you or sharing your religious views comes across as pretty assholish to me.

I’m sure that somewhere he has family that miss him. And whether I agreed with his political views or particular brand of Christianity, there were many that did and felt that his ministries were an important part of their lives. My grandmother was one of those people. I didn’t see what she saw in him, but in some way he enriched her life, and I’m happy for that.

Big difference between "not agreeing" and the hate-mongering he was responsible for.

But you just go right back to feeling superior. Jerry'd be proud.

Yes, there is. I don’t agree with Jerry Falwell but I’m not happy he’s dead. Finding pleasure in his death, that’s hateful. Evidently, you and Falwell may have a lot more in common then you realize. We’ll all die eventually, and even though I find your opinion detestable, I wouldn’t find any pleasure in your death because of it.

Millions of people got duped by Jerry Falwell and people like him. They should have known that he was just a snake oil salesman. He put on a good show so I've heard, and millions of people believed they got something out of it. It appears that him attacking gays, blacks, and liberal ideas was what got him into the lime-light, and made him very popular, so he alone isn't the blame.

All the people who watched him funded him and his ministry, and then they find that when the smoke clears he's just a dirty old bird like you and me....How dare he?

Con artists have used religion to gain money and prestige for hundreds, maybe even thousands of years. We shouldn't be pointing our fingers at Jerry and saying what a bad man he was. We should be pointing the finger at all the people who funded him over the years. Also, I hate to break it to you but "hate" pays. If you can get people to believe that God hates a particular group or idea, that's money in the bank. BTW, racism also pays, and pays, and pays. Figure out a way to prove that even though God created blacks, he hates them, and I bet you a thousand bucks THAT particular religion would become popular in short order.

I think I need to work on a hate speech and start my own ministry. I'm thinking of picking on people who shop at Walmart. This is a sign that they are agents of the Antichrist.

I guess having commentary on your life and death is one of the prices one pays for fame. I'd agree on three days of silence out of respect, but that doesn't fit our sound-bite world now does it?

Not cleaving to any one religious dogma myself I believe in karma and reincarnation. If you believe in these two mechanisms then you must also understand that you cannot judge the karmic weight of an action based solely on what you know from this life. Any act, no matter how apparently reprehensible could just be balancing karma from a previous life. I'd like to believe that the harm one does in this life is balancing harm one received from others in previous lives.

As far as being a fly on the wall when Falwell finally meets his maker I can only hope and pray that God says; "I love you." as he would to any sheep returning to the flock. After all, forgiveness is given for the asking.

Falwell may have harmed others in this life, he may have encouraged others to hate, but don't we ask God to forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us?

In case you haven't noticed, it doesn't take much to get us to hate some thing or some one; we didn't, or don't need Falwell for that; the hate was already there...Falwell just gave it a face and a direction, and as far as asking God to forgive us of our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us...good luck on that one buddy. It doesn’t matter how you whitewash it. It is hatred of a man for his religious beliefs. That’s what it comes down to. Whether one describes it as pleasure or relief, in the end, it is gratification over someone’s death simply because one doesn’t agree with his religious views. If we were talking about someone whose actions had hurt other people, such as the case of Saddam Hussein, I would be inclined to agree with you, but I refuse to accept that someone’s religious views alone should make them such a source of hatred that anyone would find relief in their death.

Bullshit.

Since you seem to be slow...I'll try to make this simple for you: It's not because of his religiouse views. There are lots of people with religions I don't agree with that I get along with just fine. I recently attended the funeral of a Mormon pastor I knew. I didn't agree with his religios views, and frankly find a lot of them quite silly. But he was a good man, who spent his life trying to help others, and I will miss him for the rest of my life.

Fallwell was an prick and a hypocrit who used the faith of others to push his agenda of hate an intollerance. I hated him because he called for the persecution of others, just because he disagreed with them.

I don't hate him because of his religion, and I never wished harm on him. But I don't feel one iota of grief for his death, because he was an asshole, and now that he's gone, the world is a better place without him.

Mr Fallwell had the right to preach anti gay and anti liberal rhetoric through freedom of religion. Don't be rediculous and think that because someone died...that all the people he offended will sit in silence. I'm not gay, but if I was, I'd be happy that someone who said my very existence is wrong...has finally gone on to judgement. Remember the Munchkins and the witch. Ding Dong blu-blah-blah-blaaah. And you can't change that by gettn' all bendy.

"Whether one describes it as pleasure or relief, in the end, it is gratification over someone’s death simply because one doesn’t agree with his religious views."

Finn, what they said.

And BTW you never responded to my example of Jesus. He didn't tolerate the Falwells of his day. If you are using christianity as a reason for your righteouness, try remembering that little bit as well.

I don't think Falwell will go anywhere except into the ground. But I'm sure glad he's not here anymore, mucking up other people's lives. It's too bad that he didn't have a change of heart.

ROCKETJOCK

Okay, first let me establish my feelings on the late Reverend Falwell:

I didn't like him. The man was an opportunistic hypocrite, who supported Jim Crow until such support became a public liability, and then reversed course so fast it could make your head spin. He had an extremely predictable patter. First he'd say something unabashedly hateful against some group or person he perceived as an easy target. Then, when faced with negative feedback, he'd either apologize or deny making the statement, and finally he'd say the same thing, in slightly different wording, with a few weasel words added.

He was, simply, a bigoted BB-brained bully, who represents to me the worst aspects of organized religion.

With that said, I won't pass judgement on his place in the afterlife. I have no specific knowledge of what lies beyond the veil, other than a personal faith that there is something. But that's a faith, not proof.

The only thing about the afterlife that I'm certain of was stated by Spider Robinson in one of his Callahan's Place stories: "The least untrue thing you can say about the afterlife is this: It's going to be a surprise!"

Mr. Falwell would not have agreed with that statement. He believed that he had the inside track on eternity, and that all of God's rules rather conveniently tied in with his own desires and prejudices.

As I said, I have no proof or advance knowledge, but I've still got a gut feeling that Jerry Falwell is feeling rather surprised just about now. And if there's anything to Karma and cosmic justice at all, he's currently being scheduled to reincarnate as a gay, Wiccan person of color somewhere in the Bible belt.

FREMDFIRMA

Sorry folks, but..

I'm glad he's dead and I sincerely hope that he's roasting on a spit in his beloved christian hell to sappy organ music with a bunch of damn fools shovelling coal on the fire singin hallelua.

Why ?

Oh anyone can say anything they like, and a man has a right to his opinion, same as anyone else, but when they encourage, directly or indirectly - the destruction of non-believers by any means violent or no, they've crossed a line with me and become a nuisance and a threat.

You can think that I am an asshole all you want, sure - but were you to take that and then go round up a bunch of faithful to kick my ass, yeah, if you wrecked your car en-route and were decapitated sliding under an 18 wheeler, I'd be pretty damn happy about it, make no mistake.

Your right to believe ENDS right when and where your belief requires that I die for mine.

So him, I hope he burns nice and crispy, it's not like he actually practiced the belief he rode to power on anyway.

On the general topic of an after life, I'd always thought it'd make a good story that people got whatever they believed - heaven and hell, houris, reincarnation ... but I suspect it's already been done.

No one is asking you to agree with Reverend Falwell or like what he stood for, and no one is even asking you not to hate him, but that doesn’t change that I think it’s assholish to find pleasure in the death of another human being simply because you don’t like what he stood for.

Look, I didn’t agree with everything Falwell had to say, either. I found some of it offensive and some of it just plane stupid. But then again, I can’t say much better about some of the people on this board. Should I hate the people on this board because I find what they say offensive or stupid? Should they hate me? That’s too much hate for me. I’m not stopping you from hating Falwell if that’s what you want, but don’t try to justify it and certainly don’t try to convince me of it. Life is too short and there are too many real evil people in the world to waste energy hating people purely for their beliefs or how they expressed those beliefs.

And I didn’t intend to respond. Why should I? Or rather why should Christianity have anything to do with what I’ve expressed in this thread?

But incidentally, since you brought it up, as I remember it, Jesus taught forgiveness and not to judge others. I imagine Falwell would have been included.
