Jerusalem's the really tricky bit. Can't see any peace over there any time soon purely because of that.

Questions are a burden to others. Answers are prison for oneself.

Yeah, here's my thought since Jerusalem is holy to the Muslims and the Jews (and the Christians if you want to split them from the Jews) why not just give it over to international control, call it completely neutral and not let Israel OR the Palestinians have it? That would remove it from the Israel-Palestine equation, since for either one to have it they would have to invade and face the fury of a sternly worded letter from the U.N.

Can you imagine how much it must hack the Israelis off to have to look at the al-Aksa Mosque up there on the Temple Mount? *shudder*

I can't remember which book, but Tom Clancy suggested just that - make Jerusalem an international city, chock full of uniformed and armed UN soldiers/guards, where any religious leader gets the utmost respect. Interesting idea.

This has already been tried. A long time ago. Look up the 1947 UN Partition Plan, UNGA Resolution 181, which resulted in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.

Thanx, Finn. I was gonna add that to the thread, but I didn't remember the specifics of when and how...

And variations on it were tried even before that. Before the Palestinian Mandate was handed over to the UN, the British controlled it and under the Peel Commission Partition Plan of 1937, Jerusalem was a strictly British controlled city, with Arabs and Jews granted equal privileges.

Was there something that happened that made them abandon it?

There was this difficulty that started in Sept of 1939. Kept the Brits pre-occupied for several years.
Things were just settling down when the '47 proposal and '48 war broke out.

The Invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany.

In 1939 the British restricted Jewish immigration to Palestine at a time when Jewish Immigration from Europe was considered by many to be crucial to escaping the implementation of the Nazi’s racist rhetoric. This caused a lot of animosity towards British rule in Palestine among Jews. Furthermore the MacDonald White Paper called for a Palestinian state, but the Palestinians, like now, were run by radicals who insisted upon the complete extermination of Jews in Israel and refused to accept the British terms. Conflict between Jews and Palestinians was fierce before the Peel Commission, and the 1939 White Paper didn't improve matters as much as had been hoped. With Britain embroiled in an extremely costly war, they had little time to deal with the problems in Palestine and after the war they had their own reconstruction to worry about. In 1947 they turned the Palestinian Mandate over to the newly created United Nations.

Finn, thanx again. Second time you've had the facts available to back up what were my general impressions.
