Looks photo shopped. Not sayin' it is, just looks that way.

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

MAGDALENA

"No power in the 'verse can stop me!"

I don't think it is... it took me a while to get the bearing of the sun - but it fits, it's just that the contrast is very sharp and the depth of field is narrow. I think it's too weird for the BBC to have put a photoshopped pic of!

Yeah - weird is the word though!

SOUPCATCHER

I have a question about Photo 8.

What the heck is going on with the dude on the pole? Is that some sort of modified-pole-vault maneuver to quickly get a weapon trained on a second-story window?

* edited to add: What it looks like to me is that the guys anchoring the pole just lifted the other guy up to the window. That seems like it would royally suck to be the lifters. Or am I way off on that?

It's just an odd pic. 2 guys in suits, on what appears to be a tarmac, looking at a scale model....?

PIZMOBEACH

... fully loaded, safety off...

There are cheap little three story apt blocks in my neighborhood that look just like those! Should I be worried?

At least I'll know some Chinese if it comes to that.

I've been reading about these joint exercises for over a year. In fact, I think I posted about it a year ago, so I'm not surprised by the pix, just find it curious that Russia and China would chose this time to release photos. I think they're making a point. A very pointed point.

Russia is China's largest supplier of military weapons. I remember hearing that Russia and China were also working out an oil pipeline deal. I'm not sure what Russia is getting out of those deals- an ally perhaps?

and throw in the other participating central asian republics

I think the photo op was more about the leaders of China and Russia watching the exercise, but then this level of co-operation supports your point.

At a time when Russia is resuming aviation patrols of North America... definitely trying to make a point.

There's a couple of things I might surmise out of these photos, altho I might be doing my usual 2+2=22

1) The original joint exercises were in Siberia, an area that nobody cares much about (except maybe Russia and China). The fact that they moved the following joint exercises to central Asia is a warning shot across the bow of a number of potential interlopers.... for example, the USA bombing or invading Iran.

2) The fact that they released pictures might mean that they are no longer trying to influence the USA government, which they may consider just simply out to lunch, but reaching directly to "the masses". Words are just- yanno- words. Nobody perked up about the joint exercises in Siberia, but THIS will definitely get attention.

I think the inclusion of the other central asian republics is the message. They gave the US basing for Afghanistan, etc... but now are swinging back to Russia and China influence wise. Perhaps firming up support for not allowing US force to use their bases anymore if things keep going as they are, or if Iran is attacked next.

" Attending the summit as an observer was Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian president, who lashed out what he called US "interference" in the region. "

" Ahmedinejad also had observer status at last year's summit of the SCO in Shanghaim and there is now talk the group may consider inviting Iran to join as a full member at some point in the future. "

" The SCO was established in 2001 by Moscow and Beijing to foster security and economic ties in central Asia.
But the group is increasingly being seen as an eastern power block aimed at curbing US dominance in world affairs. "

" At their meeting in the Kyrgyz capital, SCO leaders underlined their opposition to perceived US hegemony.

The concluding communique issued at the end of the summit included what was seen as a thinly-veiled warning to the US to stay out of the region. "

Very Interesting

edit " Several other nations have been given observer status in the SCO, among them powerful regional states Iran, India and Pakistan, alongside states such as Mongolia and Turkmenistan. "

If these guys can work together.... wow

If these guys can work together... as had been said before, nothing unites a diverse group of people like a common enemy. In this case, us. I see the same thing happening in parallel in South and Central America under the urging of Hugo Chavez. I think this will all proceed in fits and starts.

FREMDFIRMA

Yep, toldja that would happen - the Russians ain't gonna let us just waltz into Iran and destabilise their primary oil supply, and the Chinese don't want such a mess on their doorstep neither - not to mention the Chinese are currently the largest holder of US Debt that we, quite frankly, cannot pay, so they're not just lookin at the short term situation, but also pondering their options when they call in those markers and our arrogant jackasses in the State Dept give em the finger, yeah, that'll go well... NOT.

The Russians are pissed at our destabilising the region, threatening their oil supply, and them directly for no apparent reason other than stroking the little cowboy-jackass egos of our politicians by aiming nukes/nuke interceptors in their direction, and since restoring long range nuclear bomber patrols hasn't worked cause the american media is too busy singing with mockingbird, they've decided on a somewhat more public threat to get the point across.

That's what this is, a direct threat and a warning, keep fuckin with em, and they'll maybe DO something about it that you won't like - and yeah, if a fistful of other nations throw in with em, all it would need to be complete is a second Saladin to mop the floor with us quite as thoroughly as the FIRST time they threw us butchering, murderous savages out of the middle east.

So far, wiser and cooler heads have desperately tried to keep religion out of this, but certain forces in the DOD and State Dept, with a little help from the leadership of Blackwater, keep TRYING to make it a religious issue, and if it comes to Christianity vs Islam, I sincerely hope they totally destroy each other or the "winner" is so weakened by it's victory that sensible people can put the boot in and finish the job, no offense...

Add to that as I mentioned earlier, us having zero diplomatic credibility and being untrustworthy in our negotiations, the entire rest of the world has prettymuch sighed in disgust and picked up a paddle to threaten us with a spanking - and since nationally we're behaving like a spoiled rotten two year old, screaming, flailing and throwing his toys about cause he got a bee sting trying to catch one...

Can you really blame them ?

Time to take all these right-wing-neo-con-likud maniacs and throw them in an asylum where they belong so that actual adults can run our damned country, *IF* you can find any, other than Ron Paul, who are qualified for public office, cause I sure as hell don't consider the rest of those squabbling children (not even Kucinich, not no more) adults by any stretch or measure.

Or, we could just let it happen - Not living in a major city that'd be a target, and not totally dependant on our ragged and failing infrstructure, maybe I care less then you do.
*shrug*

For myself, I think our people and politicians are too damn dense for even a gesture THIS unsubtle, and they really need to hold up a sign in english in red letters a foot high.
"STOP THREATENING US OR WE'LL KICK YOUR ASS"
Of course, with the pathetic and obnoxious cowboy ego strokers we have in power now, they'd prolly just scream Yeeehaaa and push the button for WWIII.

Ain't it great to be Amurrrrikkan ?

I feel shame when I see the flag, these days, we need to take back our country from the cabal, one way... or another.
