I just read this article, which has started a bit of a s**t storm.

It does raise some interesting ideas, however. Personally, I don't plan on having children. But far be it from me to take this woman's stance.

Meh, Children learn from us, they learn what we "teach" them, intentionally or not - and much of it is so far at odds with the basic better parts of human nature that it drives them somewhat crazy, resulting in our current Pharmageddon of medicating the symptoms instead of the disorder.

Do you know what happens when a kid sees things the way they really are and calls society on it ?

The school shrinks call it a "distorted worldview" and wanna fuckin medicate it, cause the kid just couldn't gag down enough of the bullshit we shovel to believe in the artificial rationalisations and fictions we cover it up in.

How would YOU like being scorned, verbally abused and psychologically/pharmacologically manipulated cause you dared to say the sky is blue when everyone is telling you it's orange - how would you feel about those people, and the people who are saying that you are crazy for believing it's blue ?

Lemme be blunt, most kids these days, those old enough to make certain mental connections.. they hate you - and they've got every right, we are force feeding them a living nightmare of horrors and calling it a society, offering them 20-45 years of being someone elses bitch for that someone elses enrichment and never really being able to pursue their own dreams until they are too old, bitter and cynical for it to matter, and we hand this prepackaged hell to them like it's some kind of noble gift and expect them to thank us for it ?

Get real.

France has an estimated 5 million Muslims, comprising about 8 percent of the population.

"Nearly eight in 10 French Muslims generally say they want to adopt French customs," Allen said.

Some of the difference between British and French Muslims can be attributed to ethnicity and country of origin. Nearly three-quarters of British Muslims are from South Asia -- Pakistan or India -- while French Muslims are predominantly from Morocco and Algeria, where they were already exposed to French culture.

True enough, but ain't most folk I say these things for, it's the ones that choked on the koolaid and somehow ran the gauntlet of pain with their soul more or less intact.

A little understanding to make em feel less alone, something I gotta do out east comin up this weekend, showing some of my own lines next generation how to negotiate that minefield without getting hurt cause they are mentally incapable of swallowing the BS our society shovels at em...

I am dreading some of these convos, cause I seem to be the only adult they'll actually communicate with, and they're gonna have some hard questions for me... and for some of em, I don't *have* any good answers, but at least I'll be honest with em, which is more than they can say for anyone else.

I doubt anyone here but me as read "A Bomb Built in Hell" - but the first time, and every time since that I read it, the thought comes to mind that "There, but for the grace of circumstance, might have gone I..." - and it's *this* I most earnestly wish to prevent... I dunno if that's gonna come across, not sure I have the words for it, but had things gone just slightly different in my life, I coulda wound up a sociopathic monster.

Seeing that potential in the eyes, thoughts and actions of one of mine own scares the everliving crap out of me, and thus I need to go throw a lifeline into that before they get sucked down into a whirlwind of hate, rage and destruction they barely even understand, cause unlike them, I know what waits at the bottom of it.

The Zero.

France's French background population is decreasing. Actually in Mark Steyn's book America alone (An interesting read with facts) most European countries populations are decreasing. In Spain, the replacement rate is 1.1 so their population in halving every generation. And in Japan the population rate is decreasing. Japan doesn't have immigration so therefore how are they going to fund healthcare in 20 years.

Mark Steyn mentions most muslim counties have a high fertility rate. Yemen 6.58 , Afganistan 6.69. Why should this matter? It shouldn't. It won't effect social cohesiveness to have a sudden massive shift in population dynamics.? I'm glad there are some people like Auraptor that actually consider how such changes would effect us.

And don't call me a racist because I'm a result of immigration too- English, Irish, Scottish and Danish and if it wasn't for immigration I wouldn't be here.

Thank you for a rational and coherent , fact based post. No childish name calling, no bogus charges of 'racism' or any such crap. Some here are so wrapped up in their preconcieved ideas of who I am or what I'm saying, they are actually worse than the things they accuse me of being.

If the population/ birth rate stats are other than what I've heard, then that's all which needs to be posted. I can take being wrong, but I won't abide wilful ignroance and being called things which I am not. Like 'racist'. A racist is one who believes in the inherent superiority of one race over all others. I reject such views and nothing I've stated remotely equates to me supporting 'racism' in any way.

Oh my lordy! Sorry, Rap, don't mean to imply that you're racist, but America Alone is a thinly veiled racist screed, hardly even veiled. An ugly, bigoted book. You don't want to read it.

Brown people are having more babies that pink people! Our (white) American way of life is threatened! Forget the Constitution, forget the rule of law, forget even the American Dream--it's our blood that makes America the great country that it is! Effing sick.

And demography is a joke. Human beings are not fruit flies. And trends can change or evaporate over night as the result of forces the demographers have no way of tracking. The rest is 20/20 hindsight and cherry-picked propaganda. So funny that the folks who debunked global warming as trend mongering, support this alarmist garbage.

Oh my god, are these folks really cowering before the might of the Islamists' penises? It's a dang Southpark episode come to life!

And if you thought the red menace was a thing of the past, guess again! http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_artic

I'm sorry, I had the displeasure of reading a good chunk of America Alone recently and it made me want to puke. Like this:

So, just to end things on a slightly more upbeat note, I leave you with this year's Russian entry to Eurovision, to show what has become of those very dangerous folks who said they would bury us a generation ago (you really gotta watch this, it is magnificent).

Quote:

Since the 1980s, France has ceased being a country of mass immigration. Meanwhile, the national birth rate, after continuing to drop for a time, began to rebound in the 1990s and currently the country's fertility rate is close to the replacement level. In recent years, immigrants have accounted for one quarter of the population growth - a lower proportion than in most other European countries - according to an INSEE 2006 study: "The natural increase is close to 300,000 persons, a level that has not been reached in more than thirty years. Net migration is estimated at 93,600 persons, slightly more than in 2005.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_France

France seems to be the exception of the rule in most of Europe when it comes to immigrants and birth rates. France is 'almost' at replacement levels, but true stats are hard to come by. " According to Michèle Tribalat, researcher at INED, it is very difficult to estimate the number of French immigrants or born to immigrants, because of the absence of official statistics" .

Now piss off.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

So, back to the original topic... and mebbe a little about racism too...

Ive; always wondered about the demographic transition which is what occurs when both death rates and birth rates fall, with birth rates falling below death rates in highly developed countries.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographic_transition
What is the REAL trigger? What are its implications? I'm just going to toss this out in no particluar order, and.... not, I don't know the answers to these questions.

I guess my first question is... what is the REAL trigger of the demographic transition? In China it's a transition enforced by law. In other countries, it appears to be triggered by improved living standards.... or it it urbanization? Or is ti relative poverty? Does it come about when women are able to support themselves without a man? OR is it television? Does the birth rate fall once you put the remote into a guy's hands?

Immigrants from less-developed countries have higher birth rates than the destination well-developed countries with their lower birth rates. The immigrant birth rate drops quickly- within two generations- to the birth rate of the destinations. I'll give you an example: I personally know several people whose parents were born in Mexico. Their parents had 8.. 13... 16 surviving children. They themselves had 3, 4, or 5. Their children, less than two. But that interim birth-rate bump does introduce a demographic shift especially if the influx is large.

So, what is it exactly that causes that transition? Are there ways to trigger it early? (I'm of the opinion that the world is overpopulated so IMHO the fewer children per couple the better. Below replacement is ideal.)

And what does it "mean"? Even in situations where the transition is enforced by law, such as China's one-child policy, parents seem to "invest" more into their fewer children creating "little emperors" who grow up with perhaps inflated views of what is "due" them.

Rue commented a number of threads ago that we are "self-domesticated". If you look at pets, they behave in ways that are "infantalized".... or in less pejorative terms, their youthful period is extended. They play, they are more trusting, and they expect a surrogate mom to take care of them. As birth rate falls, are we setting up a "positive feedback" situation where the young refuse to have children? And- is that a "BAD" thing?

Except in hard-core capitalist/ individualist countries like the USA, where our natural trend towards societalism is countered by a culture of individual greed. (Which BTW STILL doesn't increase the birth rate.)

You have to look at the youth of different nations a wonder at the huge difference between them (exempting the USA which is whole 'nother story since our view of societalsim is that it is something to be torn down). On the one hand there are vast numbers of children who grow up in a culture where they ARE replaceable: poorly fed, barely cared for, a resource to be exploited by the male dominant power structure: children soldiers, workers and prostitutes... And on the other hand a group of bored/ amused self-centered youth who only want to have fun. What a disconnect! Are they the only two models open to us?

Rue and AuRaptor, for the love of god...

I don't usually police my threads (and more importantly, I don't need to). But can either of you two explain to me what French Muslim population trends (besides the author being French and the book being about children) have to do with not liking your kids? If it were someone else's thread, I would leave it alone, but I have to wade through you two's bullshit just to get to the few comments that have relevance to the issue. If you wanna argue who's the biggest racist, be my guest, but do it somewhere else. Some of us actually want to discuss the topic at hand.

We now will resume our regularly scheduled threading (lord willing...).

If you want to know where things started to go wrong, look at Rap's FIRST comment (and while you're at it, look at my first two comments). What Rap said was INACCURATE and DEEPLY OFFENSIVE. I will stop responding when he stops defending his racism.

Meanwhile, in France, Muslims continue to out populate the natives. As is the case across most of Europe. Check back w/ us in 20 yrs, and see how that's turned out.

I've been on this forum long enough to expect certain people to make ignorant and hurtful statements. And speaking as someone black, I know that if I flipped out over every statement that was racist or prejudiced, I probably wouldn't post online at all.

But that's not the issue here. The issue is the fact that you two have hijacked this thread. If you're gonna fight over this, start another thread and do it there.

Priceless.

Thank you, deepgirl. The name calling is annoying. And, please, we don't need a recap and who cares who started it! An invitation to dance can be refused, or you can take your little mosh pit outside so the rest of us can tango. (Or should it be the other way around? hmm.)

Uh, to the topic. I don't necessarily take this article as saying "children are evil." The author has certainly stepped into the land of blunt language, maybe because she likes getting a reaction and it'll sell more books.

But, really, did she say: "having children is a horrible idea because they are evil" or was it more of: "having children is not a perfect dreamland of joy and you need to be aware of that."

Taking the message to be the latter, I agree. I'm sure parenthood is a wonderful thing for a whole lotta people, but there are also quite a few that have babies simply because it's the thing to do. They have no idea what's really involved, and the situation can suck for everyone. Maybe the parents don't give up their own ambitions and egos to care for their kid, leading to neglect or abuse. Or they aren't centered enough to accept that their child may be - *gasp* - average, and end up pressuring their kid to acheive unrealistic goals.

Some parents look at kids as a way of fulfilling themselves and enhancing their own lives. Or they just don't think. If this article encourages thinking before parenting, I'm all for it.

Personally, I won't be having kids until I'm ready to make the necessary sarcifices. I've seen unwanted kids, and I won't be putting anyone through that.

DEEPGIRL -

I side tracked from your thread, as the issue of low birth rates throughout Europe had recently been discussed on radio/ t.v. programs. Sorry for the near hijacking attempt. I just thought of it as a consequence that goes hand in hand w/ the main issue.

Per the article, I find the author a bit self centered and selfish. I cringe at the hell I put my parents through, and have far more respect for what they put up with to raise a family. Parenting isn't something that can be done well by just half assing it. Whining about not being able to go to a movie or going out of town for the weekend? Tough. No one said life was fair.

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

Not exactly how it played out, but if that's how you see it, fine. Just know that I didn't resort to name calling until I'd already been accused, falsely, of being a racist.

Have a nice day.
