Dr. Miller's data reveal some yawning gaps in basic knowledge. American adults in general do not understand what molecules are (other than that they are really small). Fewer than a third can identify DNA as a key to heredity. Only about 10 percent know what radiation is. One adult American in five thinks the Sun revolves around the Earth, an idea science had abandoned by the 17th century.

I’m sure there is some reason why they excluded from this article Millers other findings, which are that while the US’s scientific literacy is abysmally low it is also among the highest in the world, beating out the Europeans and the Japanese, and it has increased over the last 20 years. In fact, the US has gone from being among the least scientifically literate to being one of the most in just 20 years. Much of Miller's research is very encouraging.

It's kind of like being the least creepy pedophile, sure you're aren't as bad as everyone else, but you're still pretty damn bad.

The reason the New York Times spins this as bad is because they have an agenda. The fact is that if your seventh grader was reading at a first grade level last year, but this year is reading at a fourth grade level, you don’t write him off as hopeless – he’s improved, a lot. The US not only has a higher scientific literacy then the Europeans or the Japanese, according to this study, but the US also improved the most. In twenty years – less than a generation – the US has tripled its scientific literacy.

AURAPTOR

America loves a winner!

We're watching the product of the Department of Education at its finest. Abolish this wasteful cabinet position and focus more on the children, and not on paying the administrators salaries. There's far too much pork in the school systems, where as the money sent doesn't reach to thems who need it most.

Bout time for a school voucher program, if ya ask me.

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

On the remote chance you are serious in asking... Crime Scene Investigator. As in TV show by name of CSI.

I don't think these findings are really an accurate indication of the intelligence and sophistication of the average American. For that, I think it'd be more useful to look at how they deal with important decisions that require mature judgment and deliberation. Take the last two presidential elections for example...

I have a vote and I'm not afraid to use it!

When it comes to CSI ... the people I work with have fun watching it to count the inaccuracies.

I don’t watch CSI so I had to think about it too.

I hope that as scientific literary increases, the History Channel and the Discovery Channel will get rid of these damned ghost-stories, alien-stories, evil government conspiracy crap and prophesy crap and start broadcasting more real history and science shows.

How many times can people hear about the alien autopsy or government cover-ups of alien technology? It just gets old fast.
