There's NO WAY we could possibly use up all of the Earth's resources! NO WAY!!
Have you seen us from space?? GREEN EVERYWHERE!!!
If every person on this planet hacked down twenty trees a day for the rest of our lives, guess what? Still more trees. And more oil is being discovered every year. And the sea absorbs our supposedly dangerous toxic dumping, and guess what? Still great fishing! And oh, how we pollute the air! See how we need respirators to go outside? No? That's cause the air is fine!
I throw all my non-bio-degradable garbage out the window of my car on the highway, and know what? It's not there the next day. This planet is amazing in it's ability to take a punch.

I'm with the cool kids on this one, my peeps, we do our planet no harm. I want a Hummer.

Keep the Shiny side up

Chris

Recently discovered records indicate that, after the 2008 Clinton/Obama election, the USA ended the so-called "War on Terror" and provided nuclear technology to the peace-loving people of Iran and other Middle-eastern countries in exchange for their promise to quit exporting greenhouse-gas-causing oil.

The 2016 nuclear exchange between Greater Persia and Israel was quickly followed by the backpack nuke Jihads in Europe, Japan, and Southeast Asia (ever notice how there's not too many folk not speaking English or Chinese in the FF world?). The resulting nuclear winter quickly used up stocks of fossil fuel. South America reverted to banana republics squabbling over the few remaining resources. Only the United States of North-American and Greater China (including Australia and New Zealand) maintained the ability to get off the planet.

Hey! It's just as logical as yours.

Frankly, I’m more worried about the planet destroying us. I think there is a certain degree of arrogance in the global warming doomsday camp. Much like the those who refused to believe that the Earth wasn’t the center of the universe, some people can’t grasp the idea that we just simply might not be in any condition to dictate what the planet does with regard to climate.

Personally, my guess is with regard to the climate that it won’t be global warming that gets us, but it might be global warming that makes us drop the ball. We might end up being so preoccupied worrying about a warming climate that we won’t prepare for the inevitable cooling that historically seems to have followed warming trends, usually with drastically negative impact on civilization.

Why do you feel the need to respond, is what I find curious.

There were 2 things happening w/ y2k at the same time. You're right, that most of the computer issues were taken care of, with no small amount of work before hand to make sure all would run smoothly. Taking a proactive position unquestionably was needed for many key industries. Which is why I never felt there would be a problem. Those who had it in their best interest to make sure y2k wouldn't screw w/ their livelihood did what they needed to do. That part is understandable.

But the nut jobs, the whackos who thought Clinton was building concentration camps, claimed they had SEEN thsoe camps being built, and claimed that he'd use y2k as an excuse to usher in martial law, it's those kooks who I'm comparing the mass hysteria we see about global warming...THAT is how I see so many reacting to this 'climate change' fraud.

y2k came and went, and save for a very few minor issues, the world kept moving forward. All was well. The earth will go through its changes, warming / cooling, dryer / wetter, etc... there's nothing we can do to change that. Nor should we even try.

Because you seem to be implying that there was no problem with the 2000 Bug, when there clearly was that we avoided through action. Given that you're comparing it to global warming which you say isn't a problem and we shouldn't do anything about, seems to be the reasonable interpretation. In fact there is another comparison, many people said they didn't believe there could be a problem, largely because they never understood the proposed issue, and said nothing needed to be done. Just like global warming:

The problems with arguments against global warming, is that they revolve near exclusively around a denile, rather than a refutation of the science of global warming. Big things are made of the Earth being warmer in the past, but that doesn't refute that man is involved, it shows that the Earth can warm naturally, it doesn't prove the Earth is warming naturally this time. It's perfectly possible that global warming today is caused, or greatly exacerbated which is just as bad, by man and still be natural in the past.

How is it in any way a " reasonable interpretation " when I specifically noted that a great amount of work HAD been done to avoid problems ? It's no secret that companies spent 1000's of hours working on the Y2K bug in order to keep their systems and their business running smooth. I made that perfectly clear! Talk about denial, you see ONLY what you want to see, and this example only makes my case more valid.

You dismiss the science where it threatends to disrupt your template. Sun activity goes up? Not a cause of global warming. Polar caps on Mars melt ? Nope, gotta be something else. Polar Bears threatened with extinction? Sorry, their population remains constant or has actually climbed around the world. And then you talk about denial ? Too gorram funny.

There were religious whackos ( Christian fundies ) who believed Y2K would usher in the return of Jesus. WHy? It was fortold in The Bible, that's why. Folks were told to look for 'earth pangs', meannig more hurricanes, more earthquakes, etc.... and that's exactly what they saw. They weren't paying attention to these things before, even though they were always occuring, but NOW, it was far more important because Jesus was coming back. How did they know ? The Bible said so, and the Bible can't be wrong. Word of God, ya know.

Only, there's one small problem. These things, quakes and hurricanes, HAD been happening all along. Sometimes more, sometimes less, but always happening. Fact is, the number major quakes had been stable for the past several decades, or in the decline. Oh, but the Bible thumpers had seen it on the news! It's been reported, and you can't deny that! Um...yeah, I could. Just looking at the records of the USGS and looking at the data. Still, I had folks tell me that news reporters knew MORE about earth quakes than the USGS!! Why? Because they REPORTED on it , and they saw the reports on t.v.!

Same thing is happening w/ global warming/ climate change. Back in '05, folks were told that Katrina was a product of "global warming" , and we should expext more hurricanes, stronger hurricanes and more to hit the US than ever before.

2 yrs later, where the fuck are the hurricanes ? No where. If a warmer climate was to cause more storms, where were they ? Seems folks don't know as much about the weather as we were led to believe.

John Coleman is right.

Stop ranting and show me the science and I'll listen, I haven't ignored anything because you haven't provided anything. What I've seen indicates a net DROP in sun activity over the last few decades.
Quote:

Polar caps on Mars melt ? Nope, gotta be something else.
Actually only the southern polar cap is receding, which eloquently proves the confirmation bias. If one is receding, and one is expanding it's reasonable to say the global net temperatures on Mars aren't changing. Or we can stop at "the southern cap is receding" and assume the northern one is as well because that confirms what we want to hear.

chrisisall, I didn't reply because citizen was having nothing of it. He's given up any rational thought/disucssion/ what ever. His mind is made up,screw the facts.

Quote:

Moreover, the notion of a declining polar bear population doesn’t square well available information.

A Canadian Press Newswire story earlier this year reported that, in three Arctic villages, polar bears “are so abundant there’s a public safety issue.” The local polar bear population reportedly increased from about 2,100 in 1997 to as many as 2,600 in 2004. Inuit hunters (search) wanted to be able to kill more bears because they are “fearsome predators.”

An aerial survey of Alaskan polar bears published in "Arctic" (December 2003) reported a greater polar bear density than previous survey estimates dating back to 1987.

If polar bears really are getting skinnier as the 1999 study suggested, it may actually be due to an increased population subsisting on the same level of available food. After all, the harvesting of Alaskan polar bears has been limited by the Marine Mammal Protection Act (search) and international agreements since 1972.

Sorry chrisisall, but not everyone who debunks your views is a 'neo-con' or has no background in science. Get over your ingrained prejudices and wake up. Please.

AU, thanks for the quote, but not all info on this matter concurs:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/07/06/AR2005
070601899.html

Quote:

Ice is melting there about three weeks earlier than it did 30 years ago, said Stirling, who has been studying polar bears for 35 years.

"For a polar bear, not all weeks are created equal," he said. "They are losing three weeks at the best time of the year for feeding on the ice, when seal pups are abundant and bears put on fat that they store for the four months that they have to live onshore."

Having lost this critical hunting opportunity, polar bears in western Hudson Bay weigh about 15 percent less (about 150 pounds less for an adult male) than they did 30 years ago, Stirling said.

"The bears are losing their physical condition," he said. "It is a cumulative process that is causing a steady decline in survival, particularly for cubs and sub-adults. It is causing the population to decline."

So, once again, who do you believe? I tend to go with my eyes, someone once said we should use 'em...

Signy and many others have never seen anything but recessions. If you scream recession long enough sooner or later you’re going to end up being right, no matter how big an idiot you are. Instead of forcing either of these issues into black and white packages that suit political views more than the facts, why can’t people realize both are more complex than that. Be careful about that Ace of Spades when it falls.

Now now, no name calling.
The economy had a few spikes, but the quality of education has more to do with our fall from economic grace than any other single factor IMO. If we spend on war, but make education a less important matter, we doom ourselves to use force rather than brains to solve most issues. Bottom line.

Bullshit! The economy goes up and down for all kinds of reason, regardless of education or war. While the economy was roaring, people claimed, for purely political and ideological reasons that have nothing to do with the actual state of the economy, that the economy was in the dumps.

JONGSSTRAW

Y2K was an absurd joke. Most companies had new or fairly new computers that handled it perfectly, as the 2000 date appeared as scheduled. I guess some companies that had computers with tape reels may have had a need to "get ready". Less than a week after Bush became President, Streisand and her devoted gang of planet Earth saviors was blogging and stating that Bush & the evil Republicans were poisoning the water and the air. Somehow none of us, hopefully, have succumbed to that dire prediction of water poisoning and suffocation. Give Gore credit...he has taken the abstract art of whiny, hysterical bitching by the ultra-elite liberal left to new, never-before imagined heights. He has made it a mainstream religion for all those lonely, wandering, lost souls who desperately need to have something to latch on to in common, in brotherhood...then ya throw in a perfect tie-in to the devil Bush and his dastardly minions to really get the eager legions of drones fired up, and then to top it off give the great charlatan, the new Reginald Van Gleason Gore ...give him an Oscar & a Nobel Peace Prize. That's the crowning achievement in this fabulous puppet circus...a modern Tale of The Emperor's New Clothes. Maybe they could make another Gore movie and cast Claire Danes and Leo DiCaprio together again and have them both die in each others arms from the really, really hot weather, or perhaps get eaten alive by a passing polar bear floating by on a detached North Pole iceberg.

Actually, most companies may have had new computers (though a lot didn't, mainframes are expensive) they were still using old software that used short date fields.

War is a quick short-term fix, and lack of education makes for a service economy, rather than a leading tech one. PART of the natural cycle of things, I could agree on that. Look, this planet goes through cycles- did carbon emissions cause the Ice Age, or the last really hot spells? I'm just holding with man adding to what's already always happening. Maybe we're speeding it up 20%...maybe it will 10% cooler on the cool down...who knows? But the climate IS changing (again), and we'd better prepare ourselves- that's all I'm about. If we're caught with our britches down, all will not be well.
Always be prepared son. Always be prepared.

More bullshit. The fact is that you, like many of your ideological comrades, are unconcerned with whether the economy is doing well or not. You define the strength of economy by whether you agree with the ideological or political structure, not the actual economy. Anti-capitalists always claim that economy is bad - sometimes they’ll be right, sometimes they’ll be wrong, but for certain, their assessment is independent of the actual state of the economy.

Uhhh, no, dumass*. I rate the economy by how big the poor class is, the purchasing power of the individual, the wealth of the wealthy vs. the poverty in the streets, etc.
If you just want to go by how many billionaires there are, then certainly, our economy is roaring away, and no little recession will affect that.

*put in for effect only.
