For half a century, social psychologists have been trying to figure out the human gift for rationalizing irrational behavior. Why did we evolve with brains that salute our shrewdness for buying the neon yellow car with bad gas mileage? The brain keeps sending one message — Yesss! Genius! — while our friends and family are saying,

“Well... ”

This self-delusion, the result of what’s called cognitive dissonance, has been demonstrated over and over by researchers who have come up with increasingly elaborate explanations for it. Psychologists have suggested we hone our skills of rationalization in order to impress others, reaffirm our “moral integrity” and protect our “self-concept” and feeling of “global self-worth.”

If so, capuchin monkeys are a lot more complicated than we thought. Or, we’re less complicated. In a paper in Psychological Science, researchers at Yale report finding the first evidence of cognitive dissonance in monkeys and in a group in some ways even less sophisticated, 4-year-old humans.

I believe they call it 'La Plancha' in my home town. Literally, 'The Iron' and quite frankly the only way to make a good Cuban sandwich.

Providing a link with the cut'n'paste doesn't change the fact that the cut'n'paste is a copyright violation. Useing it jusy to spark a discussion doesn't change that.

Posting the link is okay, but posting the actual text, accredited or not, isn't. Granted, no one is going to act on it, unless there is one very, very bored lawyer working for the NY Times. But it is still technically a violation.

Though, your rationalizing it does make for a nice illustration of the content of the article...

It seems the link with a snippet of the article is plenty of information, and the entire article is easily accessible should people want to read it.

Well my view --- which I accept has no legal basis -- is that articles from newspapers are fair game. As a society we give newspapers a level of protection under the first ammendment on the understanding that the ideas they spread are too important to allow censorship. If society gives those ideas protection on the basis they sould be out there and discussed, then they should be out there being discussed.

It might explain why they are so invested in sticking with him after that decision has been made. People here assume some kind of conscious decision or self interest. This implies that once decisions are made it's hard to force the mind to make a reassessment.

This may also explain why McCain is doing so badly this time around. Having already been rejected in favour of Bush primary voters may have "downgraded" him as a choice. It also fits with the observed effect that canidates usually only get one chance at being president -- it seems if you dont win the primary in one cycle it's hard for you to win it subsequently unless the political situation radically changes.

The implication of the study is that you have to be a valid choice. In selecting the other guy the primary voter has to actively decide to reject you.
