The question had nothing to do with Hillary as such, it was about what Jihadists would think of the US electing a female President. I don't give a damn what they think, it's none of their business, just because they are the kinds of nutjobs that mistreat their women should not effect the US decision at all.

Like I said there is no good reason to NOT elect a woman (this being a generic woman not nescessarily Hillary.)

I know I should have resisted but I'm a sinner....

But to answer your question the best advertisement for freedom is freedom. If we stick by our principles, if we show folks there is a better way, then over time they will decide to take it. What we need to show the world that women can go into space, be doctors, scientists even Presidents and that there should be nothing that limits their potential other than their own ability. It's hard to maintain the lie of female inferiority when there is living proof that it's untrue.

Come on, though: don't you think that the issue is bigger than just them needing to see what's possible? Seems like a more systemic change is in order. Now, this was my original point: it's foolish to think that just demonstrating what's possible is going to put an end to the oppression of women everywhere. We know damned well what's possible here in the U.S.--yet at the current rate, the gender wage gap in this country won't be closed until 2050! Hello Causal,

You don't seem like a wack-job to me, and your position seems to have little to do with religion.

You are right, incidentally. Change is slow. I wouldn't be surprised if it took us decades to close our own gaps of equality and fairness for all. Fortunately, the majority of the change we're looking for has already occurred. Like the volume on my Dad's old radio, the big difference is in the early part of the dial. Turn the dial up 50% and you've got 75% of the volume that the system is capable of. The other half of the dial only gives you the remaining 25% in ever-diminishing increments.

The big stuff - equal rights, the ability to vote, discrimination laws... That's the first half of the dial that gives you most of the volume. Now we just have to crank it the rest of the way to achieve the difference between ink and practice. Go back in time and talk to a suffragette, though, and I think they'd agree that it's a brave new world for women in America. (In a good way.)

Change takes time, and it'll take the oppressive nations of the world lots of it to make the changes you're looking for. But showing them what is possible, time and time again, is indeed one of the many important steps to changing their lives.

Though I think Coca-Cola, Blue Jeans, Movies and the Internet are just as important for subverting their consciousness. (Insert maniacal laughter here.)

MMMmmm ...

Think that dicrimination exists because it benefits the disriminator (at least in their mind). It's the myth of the zero-sum world gone horribly awry taught to generations upon generations.

Discrimination goes away by investing in women - small loans programs, education and health care. Once women find they can be successful and take care of themselves and their families they tend to chuck the bastards overboard.

But Hillary doesn't have much to do with it.
