This article makes some really worthwhile points, even when they are bit painful to acknowledge. But it also fails to address all the reasons why our current culture, or that part of the culture that predates the internet, has made the refuge of online life such an appealing alternative. The reasons people are hiding behind the technology are directly related to the consumerism and social manipulation that have been rammed down our throats for at least a century. As someone old enough to remember pre-internet life, I don't think the internet makes things worse all told. I still find it a net gain. But the points of the article are definitely worth absorbing.

Holy shit that hits the mark!!! I'm from pre-internet times, and I tell ya, this is the truth!

Think about all those teenagers in their dark rooms, glued to their PC's, turning every life problem into ridiculous melodrama. Why do they make those cuts on their arms? It's because making the pain-and subsequent healing-tangible releases endorphins they don't get otherwise. It's pain, but at least it's real.
Peeps like me use the internet for info and entertainment, but I've seen my stepson & friends use it as a support system, without which, they couldn't survive! They have SO many friends, and when I ask how many actually ever physically see or touch each other, the number can be counted on less than three fingers of a hand! The piercings and cuttings...HA! In my day we punched a tree or wall when overwhelmed and the broken bone HEALED! Now it's all on the (tatooed) sleeve, permanently visible and easy-to-see. An instant record of inner drama that few will ever view, unless you get a close-up on the web-cam.

My younger son is going the other way; he likes to actually PLAY WITH friends, and uses the internet to watch new episodes of Ben 10.

It's cycles I guess....
