sorry, the price of gold in the US closed at 857 today, and is still trading in the international markets around 854. Silver is pushing a recent high, closing at 15.23, and trading in the international markets around 15.16. Oil pops over $100 today, and I see lines at the gas stations on the way home. I guess I got lucky; I topped off two days ago, so just drove by.

So... irrationally high prices on oil and PM's? Or has the Fed Reserve injected excessive liquidity in staving off the subprime mess?

Once you set a record...

Today, gold closed in NY around 877. In international trading it's up another 8 bucks; putting the price of gold in China (Hong Kong) at 885.

Silver is also doing nicely; but it won't be setting any record due to the high of $50 or so that the Hunt brothers managed to trip it up to in 1980. Silver is only at 15.7.

Leads actually up, I bitched that we didn't have enough in-service ammo production (we got ONE, count it, ONE plant, ok ?) to get into this mess in the first place.

Getting .223Rem/5.56Nato is a hassle as of late, but those who produce it are making a mint as they can barely supply the demand.

Weren't for the private sector we'd be in worse shape... but yeah, leads up enough to be annoying even for people who do their own reloading.

And platinum went through the roof; not that many folks noticed. Went from about 1500 a month ago to 2500 now; give or take.

Almost all commodities are up. You don't want to know where wheat prices are. Anyone counting on an inflation rate in 2008 below 10%? I hope not.

I have a friend who buys military calibers because ammo is usually cheaper, he's got a bunch of 5.56 guns, he's not too happy right now.

I didn't think of ammo until you mentioned it actually, The local places are sold out of Wolf for my SKS so I'll either have to wait for them to re-stock or bite the bullet (no pun intended) and order a thousand or two from the intertubes. No way an I paying 75 cents a round for it.

I know the guy, don't ask how, but he says if you want some, you better hop on it quick cause he's almost out, especially among popular permutations.

Sadly, he doesn't sell the unjacketed keithpoint semiwadcutters I load Miss Misery with, but since I only use them five at a time and very rarely, it's no biggie.

His website's pretty obvious, but what I know about per-case pricing would fit in a thimble with room to spare, so you'll have to make your own call on that one.

Bear Stearns, once a mighty Financial institution has collapsed. Last week $150+ per share; today JP Morgan has agreed to stock share swap at $2.

Dollar has slipped to below .71 on it's index.
Gold has pushed past $1020 / oz.
Silver is over $21 /oz.
I haven't checked lead lately, sorry ;-)

Just for perspective, let's tack on this bit.

Means 98.78% of those having accounts in a crisis are potentially screwed, it's the FSLIC all over again - and come on folks, you know as well as I do that the 1.22% they DO hop to for, they ain't you and me, they're the big boys padding their pockets.

I learned the hard way from the implosion of the FSLIC, and history DOES repeat itself when no one learns a damn thing from it.

Hmmm. There actually isn't that much 'cash' around ie: green pieces of paper. Maybe $2,000 for every US citizen. We run on checks and little 'bits' in computers.

I wouldn't worry too much about the FDIC right now. Keep in mind that the Fed is pushing about $30 Billion into Bear Stearns so JP Morgan can 'make the sale happen.' Plenty more where that came from.
