April 15 is the day when we can all celebrate our love and support for the Federal Tax system. I invite you all to share your tax-holiday stories and plans.

Here in Ohio its a beautiful spring day. This morning I just sent this nice fella along to jail for 90 days and I'm taking a half personal day this afternoon from my highly paid govt job and cooking out on my BBQ grill. Chicken, grilled onions and peppers. And I'm having a cake.

On behalf of the millions of govt workers out there I just want to thank you all (except the poor...cause ya'll don't pay taxes).

However, at the risk of taking what you say far too seriously (which is to say seriously at all) I have to point out that even the poorest of poor Americans pay taxes. Maybe not the federal income tax (but even there if you are earning anything close to enough to survive on the feds are getting their cut) but certainly the social security tax, probably a state income tax, and virtually certainly state and local sales taxes. This isn't even counting indirect taxes like the portion of your rent that covers the property tax your landlord has to pay.

I suppose that a homeless person who never pays for anything ever may avoid taxation but I doubt it's actually possible to survive entirely on charity. Sure the salvation army will feed you and house you but you still have to get your own booze. I know I couldn't put up with the S.A. band for any length of time without a good buzz going.

The current HUGE scandal in the GOVERNMENT according to the GAO is the Federal Employees using their Govt-issued credit cards...for ANYTHING other than Govt. business...such as :
strip clubs
vacation trips
mortgage payments
clothing
lingerie
call girls
on-line porn
etc.

I suppose some will use their Govt credit card to pay their taxes as well. These reports about this NEVER mention if the guilty ones have been identified, and/or if they will be arrested and prosecuted. If they're not, why not? This is fraud of tax dollars...they should all go to prison.

Who cares? All I can say is my chicken turned out great, my cake is well and truly frosted, the sun is shining and I'm heading back out to enjoy it all. Thanks everybody for making this the best tax day ever!

I did my taxes at the last minute as usual, and was happy to find that I didn't owe the feds too much money. Then I realized that the reason I did'nt owe is because I didn't make squat last year. This year has started out strong, so I'm calling the bottom. Let the recovery begin!

I finished my taxes last week, but oddly I took a half personal day too, today. I didn’t grille out though. I just cut the yard and sat around watching some silly show about mermaids. Now I’m going to the senior citizen center to teach Foxtrot.

I donated my federal refund to a charity.

I keep the state refund. It’s not much, but it’ll pay for a nice night out.

But I too would like to thank you all for paying taxes that support the Military Industrial Complex, without which I’d probably be relegated to the theoretical world of academic physics.

Because of the Earned Income Tax Credit, which is if you don't make squat you don't pay...if you owed money, then at the very least you did in fact make squat.

This discussion is about income tax, but if you want to expand it to other taxes, then yes I did pay sales tax - not sure I paid property tax, but there’s obviously no way around paying sales tax. However, I would also argue that I got back more from the state then I put in. What about welfare checks? What about foodstamps? What about the free clinics? What about Pell Grants? What about the blocks of processed government cheese-food? What about the cheese, man?! The CHEESE!!!!!

No, I’m pretty sure that when you look at the bottom line I paid no taxes, and in fact it wouldn't surprise me if I ended up with more money then I earned from the system. Such is the wonderful world I live in. God bless America.

It sounds tempting. I just don’t know. On one hand there’s the Catholic church that sponsors soup kitchens and provides holiday meals, social events for poor people in town. A) Actually the discussion is about taxes. It is only a fallacy of conservatives to assume the income tax is the only tax.

B) Unless you were homeless (or I guess living solely on a federal reservation or some areas of Alaska) you did pay property tax at least indirectly.

C) Getting payments through some government program(s) (be it EBT, housing assistance, or defense contracts, tec.) does not negate the fact of taxes.

Here in Florida the sales tax is 6.5%. For 2007 the Federal earned income tax credit(EITC) for single person with two children earning less than $37,783 is $4,716. That means that in order for that person to end up paying net taxes they would have to spend $72,554 on sales taxable items in 2007, almost double their income. For a single person with one child earning less than $33,241 they would receive $2853, requiring them to spend $43,892 in order to end up paying any taxes. Single people with no children don't do quite so well. A single person with no children earning $12,590 receives $428. This means if they spend their entire income on sales taxable items they would end up paying $390 in taxes. Since food is not taxable in many states it would be difficult to spend your entire income on taxable items. Uncle Sam has never given a dam about single people with no children, they always get screwed.
