HERO, RUE: Thanks Rue for looking that up on the safety record. When I tried to look up airline safety records, the complaint that I found was not that the FTSB (not the FAA) hadn't released the records, it was that they released them in such a mess that nobody could make head or tail if it. The "report" contained duplicate records (multiple reports of the same thing), unverified were mixed with verified, equipment failure mixed with administrative violations, unsorted in terms of airline/ date etc.

In other words, despite the fact that the FAA had had the info in their possession for a long time (I think it was on the order of two years) and had been pressured for at least a half-year to release it, they did what is essentially a "raw data dump". So while it was entirely possible to find a single incident record it would be impossible to find a trend unless you were willing parse the entire file. I didn't have the time to pick thru the latest brouhaha and was hoping post the complaints that I found later.

So, Hero, since you're all lawyerly and everything, from the data that YOU can access tell me: Which is the safest major carrier: UAL, USAir, or Southwest?

My impression is that both the FAA and the FTSB have a cozy relationship with the airlines instead of the flying public, and aren't doing their jobs to ensure airline safety. AFA costs are concerned, that's for the airlines to worry about, not the FAA/ FTSB. The only beef that any airline should have with a reliable inspection program would be uneven enforcement because then particular airlines would suffer a competitive disadvantage. But if the program is evenly enforced, then all of the airlines are on a level playing field and they can then all pass the cost along.
