Hot landing goes off w/ out a hitch! Great job!!

After a journey of 10-months and more than 400 million miles, Phoenix has arrived at the Red Planet to begin its study of water and possible conditions for life.

Nice pic, and thanks for posting it, AURaptor.
On radio this afternoon they went over each step which had to go right before, during and after
landing.
Nothing was said about remembering whether they
were in English or metric math when calculating
the trajectory. Must have done it okay.
For a long time we've considered Mars projects unusually "jinxed."
Somewhere in my environment I have a drawing of
Martians sitting at the edge of an impact crater
picking their teeth with Mars-Lander legs.
Well, little dudes, you didn't catch it this time. Snack on something else. :;-)

Interesting image of a 'shiny' object , off in the distance. Not sure what it is, but hopefully they'll be able to focus in on this area later in the mission.

Most likely , it's one of the aeroshells that enclose the lander during the roughest part of the entry/descent sequence...

Or , it could be one of those Martian igloos...

It's cold up there...

Fabulous photo link, AURaptor! TQVM.
Everybody go have a look.
I think the white thing is a harmless little
shelter half put up by observers of the
lander.
Or a dogloo...

Thanks for the link Auraptor. The pictures are better and more up to date than those at the NASA/Phoenix site. I think NASA is finally back after years wandering in the bureaucratic wilderness. I'm more optimistic about NASA's future now than at any time since the Apollo program.

I think if you don't include the failed missions by the Russians and Europeans, NASA has now been successful in something like six out of the last seven Mars missions. A pretty good record in any measurement system.

Funny thing: When I was watching NASA-TV on my iMac's widget, one shot of Mission Control showed Fuk K. Li, manager of JPL's Mars Exploration Program, sitting at his console.
The sign in front of him, written in all caps, read "FUK LI", which looked like something entirely different on my small video window!

I just Googled to see if anyone else noticed this, and I found this thread...

Take a look at the next few posts after the Fuk Li mention...

Anybody know if the 2 Mars Rovers are still operating? They've been running around on Mars for a couple of years now.

Also...anyone know what ever became of the Huygens Probe that was part of the Cassini Project. It landed on Saturn's largest moon Titan 2 years ago. I remeber seeing huge panoramic pictures sent from Huygens of Titan's landscape, but nothing lately.

Thanks.

I care!

I think it's neato. I wish the space program hadn't been hampered so much in the last 20 years. We lost a lot of time and details on missions. Sometimes it felt like the reason for a mission had been cut from the project..it was disapointing.

Anyway. I like space exploration. I'm for it.

Accepted. But I tend to think of this stuff in
terms of human beings in general, rather than
strict US-iness, and a failure is a failure,
in terms of the ratio of expenditure to collected data.

Ummm... You do realize that when they call it the "Red Planet", they're not talking about its historical voting record, right? :)

Sorry, I couldn't resist. And don't take offense - it was meant ONLY as a harmless joke!

Heh. No offense taken. But wouldn't you rather go to a whole planet where there are no Red vs Blue discussions, only " humans " ?

AFAIK Spirit and Opportunity are still functioning, although rattling a bit with the odd malfunctioning wheel here and there, which have actually been of use scraping away the top layers of soil to see underneath a bit.

Huygens was only designed to operate for a few hours before the batteries ran down. Aside from the science, it was really to see if it could be done at all. No doubt future missions are on the virtual drawing board that will run on radiothermal power, and will last a lot longer.
