First Ice-Free Pole in Recorded History?

WASHINGTON (AP)

There's a 50-50 chance that the North Pole will be ice-free this summer, which would be a first in recorded history, a leading ice scientist says.

The weather and ocean conditions in the next couple of weeks will determine how much of the sea ice will melt, and early signs are not good, said Mark Serreze. He's a senior researcher at the National Snow and Ice Data Center and the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colo.

The chances for a total meltdown at the pole are higher than ever because the layer of ice coating the sea is thinner than ever, he said.

"A large area at the North Pole and surrounding the North Pole is first-year ice," Serreze said. "That's the stuff that tends to melt out in the summer because it's thin."

Preliminary February and March data from a NASA satellite shows that the circle of ice surrounding the North Pole is "considerably thinner" than scientists have seen during the five years the satellite has been taking pictures, NASA ice scientist Jay Zwally said Friday. He thinks there is slightly less than a 50-50 chance the North Pole will be ice-free.

Energy companies and political arm-twisting has rarely been put into such sharp relief?

Socialist ideals, for one thing , is the primary reason for the scam. The 'carbon credits' joke is nothing more than a wealth distribution scheme which does nothing to lessen the amount of carbon ( the 4th most abundant element in the Universe ) and instead simply attempts to take from the haves and give to the have nots. Or something near enough that.

The Earth's weather is cyclical, just like everything else in this Universe. To make a hard line political movement out of that which inevitably happens is down right immoral.

Anyone who knows Crichton knows that he infuses fact w/ fiction in his writing. Sorta like Clancy, but before Clancy ever wrote about Jack Ryan.

To answer your question, Yes, I did really cite a book of fiction to help explain my point.

Unless you have something against reading......

Erm, it's a book of fiction, researching your fiction is one thing, but using it to support a factual opinion? That's like saying "read Dan Brown" in a bible group.

The point was to illustrate how a group w/ ulterior motives could be behind the 'environmentalist' movement , and bring up some of the methods used, etc.... not as a literal display.

Some folks just read for fun, and sometimes there's some real life messages mixed in w/ the fiction.

Don't make this out to be more than it was meant.

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

I think the point that is being missed is that there is widespread consensus that global climate change IS happening. We all tend to get hung up on whether it's purely a natural phenomenon or if mankind is having a contributory influence on it.

Regardless of WHY it's happening or HOW it's happening, I think we need to start dealing with WHAT is happening. Melting polar ice will raise sea levels, and that will most assuredly have consequences, especially if you're one of the hundreds of millions (even billions) of people who happen to live at the water's edge.

It's deemed important enough for the Pentagon and the White House to start looking into the strategic ramifications for global security, so apparently it's seen as a threat of the same type as global terrorism.

So, if it is indeed occurring, the question becomes "What do we do about it?". Maybe we can't do a single thing; maybe it's inevitable. But if there's a chance we can lessen the impact and prolong the amount of time before this reaches a tipping point and becomes unstoppable, shouldn't we at least be looking into it?

Hello,

I think that using allegorical tales to demonstrate a point is a well established tradition. I remember Aesop's fables. Ficctional tales aren't truth, but they can explain a theory about the universe and how it works. For instance, if I was advocating a political position of non-interference with other nations, I might say, "Like the Prime Directive in Star Trek." If you've seen Star Trek, then you get the gist of my belief system and we have a common point of reference.

That having been said, let me make some comments on my feelings on Global Warming in the next post.

Hello,

The scientific process prevents us from ever being 100% sure about why Global Warming is happening. In a scientific system, we'd have a hundred Earths. Fifty would be populated by varyingly developed societies, and fifty would be unpopulated by mankind. Then we'd observe for a billion years, analyze the data, and report our findings.

We only have one Earth, and so there is no truly scientific analysis of our situation. We are making frenzied best-guesses, shooting from the hip with the best available information of the moment.

In fact, it doesn't really matter whether Global Warming is man-made or part of a natural cycle. Economic forces are bringing a change to human behavior that is more profound than any guilt that the environmentalists could hope to levy.

The cost of doing business in limited resources is being profoundly felt by the average American for the first time in memory. Hybrids and E-cars are the tools of tomorrow, not out of an altruistic desire to save the planet, but rather out of a selfish desire to save the wallet.

If you believe in man-made Global Warming, then take comfort in this fact: Rampant Consumerism created the problem, but Rampant Capitalism will solve it. Cheap energy is also clean energy. The needs of the planet and the desires of mankind are finally in synergy.

Greed, friends, may finally save the world.

Fiction's OK, just don't confuse it with reality. What you need to show is not how a group "could be" behind the some sort of global warming scam, but how it IS.

FREMDFIRMA

Yanno, the main reason I generally don't comment on this stuff is that I think most of ya have completely missed what I consider the most salient point of it all - attribute it to my sideways manner of thinkin, if you like...

Man made, Natural Phemonenae, Alien Beam Weapon, who really gives a shit.

Does there HAVE to be a crisis of some form to propose the dead-bang simple concept of "don't crap where you live" to folk ?

Or maybe perhaps, that concept has a value of it's own wholly unrelated to the discussion at hand, and said discussion flies right past it into a never-ending brawl and misses it completely ?

I mean, how dumb does a person have to BE* to not realize that if you consume reasources faster than they are produced, eventually you ain't gonna have any - or that if you keep dumping waste at a massive rate into your living environment, it won't be as pleasant livin there no more ?

Seriously, try not takin yer trash out for a month, it's a really goddamn simple cause and effect and to bloody hell with the details, it's a common SENSE proposition, are people really that all fired freakin STUPID* they can't figure it out for themselves ?

I could give a shit about temperature cycles, ozone layer predictions and what have you, what I KNOW, that minimizing your waste and the toxicity thereof is a good policy, is quite sufficient to the task at hand without needing some doom and gloom story to convince me - for crying out loud, I live next to a lake, from that lake, indirectly, thus comes my drinking water...

Ergo, I do NOT dump shit into that lake, nor do I use pesticides on my lawn, wash my car with chemical crap, or do anything else that is gonna cause harmful chems to wind up in that freakin lake if I have any effective means to prevent it.

And as for other hazardous crap, might I point out to you that tomorrow I am taking four used 4ft 40w Flourescent tubes to a place and paying a nominal fee for their disposal not because the law says so, case in truth while it probably does I never bothered to check, but because *I* think it's a damn bad idea to let a waste product containing mercury get loose into my local environment, given how toxic that crap is.

So all this fire and thunder and pointless argument over global warming, the ozone layer, etc, isn't worth the oxygen yer using to voice it, so save your breath for the important core that if you can't get across to someone, then you can be SURE you're facing a moron unworthy of further conversation.

"Don't crap where you live."

Stick with THAT point, and you'll get somewhere, maybe.

*Semi-Rhetorical this, since I'm of the firm belief that yes they are, and the public school system makes them so quite deliberately.

Huh.

"Iraq made commitments after the Gulf War to completely dismantle all weapons of mass destruction, and unfortunately, Iraq has not lived up to its agreement." -- Barbara Boxer, November 8, 2002

"There's no question that Saddam Hussein is a threat... Yes, he has chemical and biological weapons. He's had those for a long time. But the United States right now is on a very much different defensive posture than we were before September 11th of 2001... ." -- Wesley Clark on September 26, 2002

Rapo, despite your Kennedy and Boxer quotes, they voted against the Iraq Resolution. The same with Jacques Chirac, who instructed his Ambassador to the UN to vote against any invasion of Iraq. And Gore said this Sept 2002 about invading Iraq
Quote:

To begin with, I believe we should focus our efforts first and foremost against those who attacked us on September 11th and have thus far gotten away with it. The vast majority of those who sponsored, planned and implemented the cold blooded murder of more than 3,000 Americans are still at large, still neither located nor apprehended, much less punished and neutralized. I do not believe that we should allow ourselves to be distracted from this urgent task simply because it is proving to be more difficult and lengthy than predicted. Great nations persevere and then prevail. They do not jump from one unfinished task to another
Here's the complete speech: www.gwu.edu/~action/2004/gore/gore092302sp.html

Of those you quoted, only Clark would have voted to invade Iraq. The others either voted against invading Iraq or spoke against it. So, in answer to your question/ accusation: All those people WEREN'T wrong- YOU were. You simply cherry-picked the data until it was hopelessly biased ... and it bit you. FWIW, I was certain that Saddam DIDN'T have WMD stockpiles. You claim that I "couldn't" have been certain. I think what you're really trying to say is that I "shouldn't" have been certain. But I was, and I was right. Next time don't cherry-pick your data so hard and you might arrive closer to the truth.

AFA global warming is concerned, you claim to be an independent expert, someone who's done original research and reached scientific conclusions. Well, since you've done all that footwork, why not put it out there for everyone to see? Truth should be able to be banged on pretty hard. If it's true, it'll stand questioning.

Well, five years of data...

You'd think they'd have spotted Santa Clause by now.

Still, five years of data is certainly enough to argue for the fundamental change to the economic and social structure of the world they so desire.

It is five years after all.

And preliminary data is NEVER wrong.

Are they sure somebody wasn't watching 'An Inconvienant Truth' (which used CGI generated pictures left over from 'The Day After Tomorrow')? No?

Edited to add: I just started recording a song off the radio. I recorded five minutes and I can report that FOR THE FIRST TIME IN RECORDED HISTORY they are playing a commercial for McDonalds' Chicken and Sweet Tea. Scientists project that there is a 50-50 chance that music will be completely replaced by rebroadcasts of that same McDonalds commercial now through the end of time. Also...in all that time only one song was recorded and apparently there is a strong chance that the only song ever to be broadcast over the radio is about Justin Timberlake bringing sexy back. AlGore blames global warming. A competing study of a three hour block conducted last week that concluded that Rush Limbaugh was the only person ever to broadcast on radio has been universally condemned as right wing propaganda since...as yet...Limbaugh has not been heard on the radio this week.

Global Warming is one thing, but I'm more concerned about why you felt it necessary to record a Justin Timberlake song. Is this you 'coming out' to us Hero?

As a scientist I merely gathered the data presented.

Picking the song to be recorded would have altered my findings...only liberals do that.

The Ruskies on the other hand are predicting the Pole vanishes in 2070, I guess they are hoping for a few more decades of oil profit.

Recent measurements by international scientists say "More than 70% of the current North Pole sea ice is less than a year old and only 60 inches deep."

Hello,
I think that using allegorical tales to demonstrate a point is a well established tradition.

Well, Anthony, I thought your posts were pretty darn responsive, at least to the thread as it had progressed to that point. Of course, they (your posts) were composed in a fairly clear and reasonable manner, which might have caused some confusion...

It was like that - just with a lot less ice - when we got here!

But you're not a scientist, you're a lawyer and as a lawyer you shouldn't be infringing on copyright law by recording songs off of the Radio, bad Lawyer, very bad lawyer.

I don't have time to read the whole thread, but I think I see Rap's source of confusion. He THOUGHT he read that the economy is on fire but the earth just won't heat up. It's easy to do - confuse economy and climate.

Denying that Iraq was in violation of the U.N. and deciding whether or not to go to war are 2 entirely different issues. Talk about cherry picking! And as a matter of fact, we DID go after those who attacked us on 9/11. We went into Afghanistan a full YEAR before going into Iraq. Funny how folks keep forgetting that. Also, al-Qaeda has been rendered useless out side the region ever since we went after them. No mere coincidence.

There's never been shown any direct tie in between human activity and global warming. Never. And the fact that the Earth is cooling over the past 10 yrs is completely ignored by the far Left on this matter.

Huh, indeed.

It will be a great benefit to World commerce if the Northwest Passage opens up. So far most of the consequences of Global warming have been positive. Crop production world wide has gone up as a result of warming. At this rate the Earth will be a paradise in a few more years just like it is here in Florida.
