'cept for the last few days which are average temperature Hero, I've been pretty damn cold on summer nights when I go out for a smoke. Not to mention the coldest, snowiest winter I can remember in my life......

For once, I think we agree on something.

Not that I don't think it's a good idea to think about how we effect the enviroment. Or that I don't think that we've done a ton to mess it up.

(So have Alarmist of the Year Tim Flannery, Profit of Doom Al Gore and Sir Richard Brazen, but I digress.)

"The patient had also developed the belief that, due to climate change, his own water consumption could lead within days to the deaths of millions of people through exhaustion of water supplies."

Are you a troll, "Hero"? 'Cause you're posting like one.

6Six,

Jesus man, global warming is obviously too confusing a term for you...Global Climate Change is the preferred term for a reason I guess, because some of you seem to intentionally ignore post after post about these man made effects not having a consistent warming effect "EVERYWHERE" at "EVERY TIME"...but instead a wreaking of haavoc upon the whole system, with a continued upward incline overall.

God, I'm starting to hate the reliance upon "common" sense...

Hero,

so Australia wants to lead by example...and that's a bad thing. Check. Now we should only be concerned about what we do if the other guy isn't worse than us. Check. A nation that has preciently pushed for and moved on to other fuel alternatives in the wake of crisis after crisis in the oil market is foolish for doing so. Check.

Long term, explain to me how this is going to hurt Australia?

Fair enough... They should have taught it to us that way in school then instead of telling us that the world just keeps getting hotter and hotter like an oven then and that the icecaps would melt and those short of Noah were going to die horrible drowning deaths.

I ain't against ya. Just wondering what you want me to do that I'm not already doing? Even with my gas guzzling beauty I only spend 100 bucks tops on gas a month. I turn off lights I'm not using. I've even switched some of my lights to those ugly light bringin' "green" bulbs... mostly for leavin lights on when I'm not around to give the illusion that somebody is there.

Am I to live in a forrest and eat from a garbage can?

Good news is that gas prices are going up. Maybe it will become economical to get cheaper, greener energies in the future.

I'm not saying its easy to do more. we all have our everyday concerns...I'm a liberal with very bad energy habits myself.

My hope is that, just as recycling has managed to become easier, with legislation, technologies and invoations will develop to keep our lives uncomplicated in this regard, and still comfortable. It takes a widespread movement to really propel such innovations to the forefront though, so I have no problem voting for representatives who are going to push in that direction.

And just to clarify, I'm not looking for a nanny government to take care of me and tell me how to behave...I know that's how it's usually spun...I'm casting my vote towards doing something about climate change, I am choosing with the majority(assuming my candidate wins), to change my behavior in this regard, in a collective, meaningful way.

So you are saying that you personally will not change your wasteful habits until your candidate gets in? You will not personally change until governmnets make it easier for you or more worth your while? The reason you have bad energy habits is because the government has no viable alternatives? Not trying to be too snarky here, just wondering where you stand given your mixed messages.

Hero, Imma simplify this as you are obviously no scientist...
Measure the temperature of the sidewalk on a hot, sunny day. Then put an ice cube on it. Right after the ice cube is all water, measure the temperature of that spot again.
Yes, it has cooled some.

Now you understand how global warming can include cooling in it's workings.

No need to thank me, I have a child and am used to explaining things for a kid-mentality.

I'm saying that we could all change our habits a lot easier if there was a comprehensive, viable, easy solution. I'm saying that I believe that this cause is a good one, but it isn't the sole thing I think about, and that it would be difficult if not impossible for me to take into consideration every single thing I think we should be moving towards in this country and do it personally. I'm saying that it doesn't help motivate when you feel like you truly aren't making a difference, but on a bigger scale that requires governmental standards, we could make that difference.

I'm saying I'm not a monk, never claimed to be, and I try not to be hyppocritical about this issue. I recognize that my habits are part of the problem. When I think about that I feel some remorse, but life moves fast and I'm not always thinking about that.

I assume that's why we have full time elected officials. To deal with some of the shit we can't spend every moment dealing with ourself. That's the theory anyway - I know its rather less rosy than that, and requires at least a cursory effort to pay some attention, because they'll screw us every time othewise.

Don't you guys know? Hero's a Republican. You know the party of "personal responsibility". Odd that I've never met a single Republican with anything even approaching personal responsibility...

As the dominant species on the planet, we need to take a sort of Hippocratic Oath, something along the lines of "First, do no harm." I've yet to have a single Republican explain to me how leaving the Earth a better place than you found it is in any way harming anyone. It seems to me like "personal responsibility" should extend to your personal responsibility to NOT fuck the planet up completely for your children and grandchildren.

But maybe I'm old-fashioned. Maybe the Republican party should just change their symbols and slogans. Instead of an elephant and that "personal responsibility" tag-line, they can go with a giant hand, middle finger extended, and the phrase, "Fuck You. I Got Mine."

It would at least bring some honesty back to the party, and I could almost appreciate the directness of the message.

Only for the rich. The poor get left out of such things.

For example...fuel efficiency. I'm all for it. Lets say that all cars made as of today are high efficiency, flex fuels, or some such. The poor don't drive cars made today. They buy and drive used cars. That means that they will continue to drive inefficient vehicles now and for years to come. Without a corresponding drop in fuel prices you are condeming the folks least able to pay to a continued financial burdon that could be eased by simply drilling for oil. I'm not saying drilling is the answer...its merely a part of the answer, just like fuel efficiency and economic growth. We reduce demand, increase supply and build and develop technology and infrastructure to support alternative energy. Thats a lot of work...and a lot of work means jobs...and jobs means a better economy and less poor folks. And I didn't even mention my idea to require every new American oil well, refinery, pipeline, etc to be made with American steel. Why...that would benefit people right here in Ohio.

A 17 year old found another way to get depressed. BFD. Why do you say Hero posting like a troll ? It's a legit story, I heard it as well, so it's not anything from The Onion. What's sad is that this is the natural result from the way the Left wing media hypes up stories and interviews nut cases who promote such radical views as that we're killing the planet and raping it of its resources.

What do you mean? I go to work, I make my own money, pay my own taxes, pay my bill, take care of my family, participate in community events, vote, never been arrested, try to help folks when I can, I'm polite, clean my room, don't drink to excess, don't gamble more then I can afford to lose, dress well, I'm clean, wash my dishes, make my bed, take care of my pets, and go to Browns games knowing full well that they will likely lose.

I deal with people every day who can't meet half the things on the list above. Most of them are Democrats by default.

Sorry, it's bullshit. yay, you do all those things. cool, you con't have a compulsive personality. Cool, you pay your taxes, how much of which you would like to work to have eliminated? Cool, never been arrested. MLK was arrested, many a time, guess he was a bad person.

This is the poblem with people in general, but republicans in the specific. We like to set benchmarks of decency based upon our own egos, our own self-esteem. All of those things you listed make sense for you to follow. You reap more personal benefit by following them, you do not have a gambling disease, so you see your ability to walk away from the table as a great excercise in willpower and goodness that other people refuse to do in turn.

On the other hand, you see climate change as a myth, you see refuse to see our responsibility in sewing chaos and creating enemies in the middle east, you refuse to concideer that a poor person does not have the same opportunities that you had/have, and isn't just squandering them.

And in this way, you've insulated yourself from feeling bad about anything. In this way you can continue to toot your own horn about what a good person you are.

I'm not saying your a bad person by the way. You may even do some real good things. You may even do a bit of self-reflection, but strangely, as I already stated, your benchmarks happen to fit your habits. We can argue the chicken and the egg here to some degree, but I think its worth you concidering the possibility that your sense of what is good is that sense because it continues to bolster your own ego.

I won't even get into the "I dress well" bit.

You make a good point. However I think comparing Dr. King to the fella I just sent to jail for beating his wife is a valid comparison. That fella was unemployed (and able bodied), had five children by 3 different women...none of whom he married and all of whom he fails to pay support for, he came to court and blamed his girlfriend (who clearly deserved the broken nose for trying to break up with him after he beat her last month), he came in wearing ragged jeans and t-shirt (his jeans were riding low exposing his boxers), he spoke disrepectfully to the Judge (which is just stupid), and while we did not discuss politics, given his demographic information he is likely an Obama supporter.

I deal with people like this every day. I have yet to see a Martin Luther King among them.

Making one's self clean and presentable as best you can is a sign a maturity and personal responsibility.

I'm not talking about suits and ties (well...in my case I am). But I had a nice Mexican fella in here this morning wearing a t-shirt and jeans. Landscaper and legal immigrant. He was clean, his clothes presentable, he spoke clearly, was respectful to the court and pleaded guilty to driving without a license and he said it was because HE had messed up by not getting a new license when he moved to Ohio. He had saved his money since his arrest so he could pay his fines and costs right then. He even apologized for taking up the Court's time. He stands out.

Listen man....

My old man said 15 years ago that gas should be five bucks a gallon and that the taxes should build public transport infrastructure. I used to think he was crazy, but now I agree with him. He ain't no tree huggin' hippie either... he just wanted all the idiots off the road.

I drive an LTD that gets gas mileage that makes a Hummer look like a midsize coupe when I'm not hypermiling. And I still agree with that.

Totally not arguing your point here man. I personally look forward to the day when it's economically feesable for me to solar power my entire house. The tech is out there, but it's still like being the first guy to buy the iPod at 500 bucks for a half-gig.... I got the money, but I'm not fat rich where I'm going to make an investement on alternative energies that cost half my retirement savings.

Here's hoping gas gets higher, the stock market finally decides to correct itself, alternative fule becomes just as sexy as Miss Johanssen and the Federal Reserve implodes on itself.

My tip for the day.... go to Sams Club and stock up on a years worth of necessities. That's the best fiscal investment you could make today if you have the money and storage space to do so.

I've thought about that before, and I do have the space. That is good advice. Considering all the bullshit pointless trips I make to the store for one or two items. I have a Ford Explorer(city driving)and gas is a terrible thing to waste!
