His fingerprints are all over everything... from the OSP (Office of Special Plans) which "vetted" Iraq intelligence (bypassing the usual security agencies) to this...

WASHINGTON - Vice President Dick Cheney's office pushed for major deletions in congressional testimony on the public health consequences of climate change, fearing the presentation by a leading health official might make it harder to avoid regulating greenhouse gases, a former EPA officials maintains.

When six pages were cut from testimony on climate change and public health by the head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last October, the White House insisted the changes were made because of reservations raised by White House advisers about the accuracy of the science.

But Jason K. Burnett, until last month the senior adviser on climate change to Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Stephen Johnson, says that Cheney's office was deeply involved in getting nearly half of the CDC's original draft testimony removed.... when CDC Director Julie Gerberding, the head of the government's premier public health watchdog, testified about climate change and public health before Boxer's committee last October.... The White House deleted six of the original 14 pages of Gerberding's testimony, including a list of likely public health impacts of global warming. The White House, at the urging of Cheney's office, "requested that I work with CDC to remove from the testimony any discussion of the human health consequences of climate change," wrote Burnett.

You'll notice that I never bust on any politico for draft dodging, yes ?

Conscription is a form of slavery, worse even than slave labor since it is involuntary servitude including combat, in it's own way as primitive and barbaric as throwing folk to the lions, see.

If you can't round up enough willing volunteers to go FIGHT a goddamn war, then perhaps maybe, you don't have ENOUGH of the support of the american people TO fight one.

Sure, lotsa folk might vote for a war, especially if they have some assurance THEY won't have to fight it, but I think a better way is to require X amount of volunteers by Y date - that way the decision gets made by those most affected by it.

For mine own, I won't order someone else to do something I would be unwilling to, but I realize this is an extremely rare mindset.

Anyhows, anyone who DID dodge the draft, good on them! - it's Unconstitutional and the best and most effective resistance to such things is outright defiance.

I never bagged on Clinton for it, and damned if imma bag on Shrub for it.

fredfirma -

we're bagging on Cheney for it,

and I would bag on anybody for it if he both believed in the war, was willing to send other people into a conflict with conscription, which is basically what stop-loss is these days...as well as the use of our national guard, which I'm pretty sure didn't sign on for overseas duty.

granted there are clauses for both national guardsmen being sent overseas if federalized, and for the possiblity of stoploss...

but if you are able bodied, and I'll assume that Cheney was, and you think it acceptable to have other people's lives used for your freedom, against their full will, I'd expect you to do the same.

and not to say when asked "I would have served if called"

and then when confronted, "I had other priorities."

It should be hard to be a hawk.

Cheney isn't the one who initiated the stop loss program. He has nothing to do w/ the decision, it's a Pentagon issue.

JONGSSTRAW

With due respect AuRap I understand why you defend Cheney and I know why you like him. But c'mon man, the guy has been an arrogant, obtuse, elitist know-it-all, ultra-partisan prick for 8 years. We all thought he'd be able to give good guidance to the in-experienced Bush, but instead, his own mis-guided and narrow visions of things have left the US a hateful, ultra-polarized country of people who feel that he has done most things wrong, including damaging our status as the world leader of human rights. My God man, if they secretly decided to do all these nasty things like torture, secret prisons, renditions, no-warrant wiretaps...etc etc ..my God..couldn't Cheney and gang have been a bit more discrete and intelligent about it? Pretty sad that they can't even be good at being bad. I mean they fart, and the NY Times has it on the front page! Did these guys really think Americans would buy into this form of Dark Government, all based on 1 terrorist attack on home soil? When Bush gave his post 9-11 speech and talked about " fighting a new kind of war"..who the fuck ever dreamed he and Bush & Rummy the Dummy would take America down the tubes? Who the hell came up with the absurd idea of flying captured Afghan fighters to Guantanamo? For what? Why didn't they just deal with them there? We went to Afghanistan to get Bin Laden & Al Qaida, right? Did they actually want to set up a Devil's Island for all the world to criticize America? Well, they did a great job then. We threw thousands of people into Abu Ghraib, and NO ONE other than CIA thugs knows what's going on there? I'm surprised they didn't seek out a descendent of Torquemada to supervise the games for Christ's sake. This Administration has had about as much diplomatic success and ability as a wounded gorilla on crack. Remember what Teddy Roosevelt said..."Walk softly and carry a big stick." Cheney et al have turned that into Walk like a neaderthal savage, talk in doublespeak, and carry a big chip on your shoulder. It's frikkin' indefensible...it's embarrassing...
it's not American values or traditions...it's just some doddering fools who got just about everything wrong since day one. Break every law, find a loophole in everything, hell, make up loopholes, be defiant, be arrogant, be "right" all the time...that really gets you far in this world...not. I'm pretty darn Conservative, but this Administration is way beyond anything resembling Conservatism. I would call it total anarchy. When did they get the right to bankrupt the country? I really want to see Rumsfeld & Cheney tried for Treason. It should be Obama or McCain's first order of business to spark up this 9% approval, do-nothing Congress, and do the Cheney-Rumsfeld treason trial immediately. Bush no...not his fault, cause he doesn't have a useful brain cell in his head.

Interesting...

Having never once assumed Jong was stupid in the first place, it's rather satisfying to see that this is true, especially when smashed in the face of someone who did, but enough petty snark for one post...

Hey Jong, while you are making some pretty good points, it's a sad fact that due to your writing style and structure many folk will dismiss your whole post without even a mere glance, so it's well worth making some reasonable stab at actual sentance and paragraph structure, if not punctuation as well.

Not sayin that to come off superior at you, cause *I* can and do read your posts just fine, but it's also true that the more "classroom correct" your writing are, the more weight it will add to them when judged in the eyes of others - regardless of the content, strangely.

It's like getting a free shot at the groin in a street fight, really - ain't no reason NOT to take it, yes ?

Just sayin, is all.

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

Jongs - Good on ya! I know you're rather conservative, and I'm rather liberal, but on this we agree. And I couldn't agree more with your point about holding Congress's feet to the fire for their complicity and complacence in all this mess. The White House has tried this kind of crap too often in the past, and they've paid the price (Watergate, Iran-Contra, Monica-gate, etc.) - but this time we seem to have given them a free pass, and I for one don't accept that as "responsible" government.

What I'd *LIKE* to see happen would be investigations, indictments, and trials of all the scum involved, but what I fear *WILL* happen is... nothing at all. It will all be allowed to be swept under the rug, in the hopes that the next guy in the office of the President will then get the same carte blanche to do more of the same.

And it's unacceptable no matter who's behind it!

What are you talking about friend? I think Jon's post is awesome exactly as it is. It's hysterical, deliciously dark, and sadly 100% true.

I concur, I was just pointing some things that would help add weight to his statements and influence a wider audience, no one has to agree with that, it was just a thought that might be useful advice, is all.

No, you're right. I don't usually read long posts. I prefer short to the point ones.
