Oh wait... guns weren't the solution to THIS mass shooting.

Somehow, I find it emblematic that a gun-totin' right-winger is physically swarmed by a bunch of pansy-assed liburls.

Guns no, but balls a-plenty.

One of his intended victims being armed might (note that I said MIGHT, since people in general are terrible shots...) have stopped his rampage earlier, but I think too many folk focus on the tool rather than the concept.

Not laying down and waiting to die because society has taught you self-defense of any kind is EEEEeeevillll....

THAT, is the concept.

I could care less if they brained him with a chair, but I DO care that someone, anyone, at least makes an *attempt* to take these guys out before they rack up a huge bodycount.

Worth pondering is that part of his decision to attack folk of the type he did, in the manner that he did, was intended to reduce his risk of facing a similarly armed victim, yes ?

Don't focus on the TOOL, Siggy, focus on the IDEA.

Whether it's the nike defense*, blowing a hole in someone, or coming up behind the shooter with a chair like something out of the WWF, do *something* other than lay down and take it.

The vilification of self-defense as a concept leads to innocent folk on the ground dead, and I have trouble stomaching that, is all.

So it doesn't matter what you USE, it's what you DO.

Is this clear enough ?

* - Nike Defense = running the hell away, which isn't necessarily a bad idea in many situations, and a moving target is way harder to hit.

Fram, have you ever know any Unitarians? I have. They're not your typical religious-type. (Or your typical liberaloid either.) They aggressively pursue justice and they believe in meaningful action, not sitting stupefied in church waiting for rescue from above. They question everything. Definitely not in sync with the majority.

Bad choice of targets, that.

I just thought the story was ironic.

Not to mention the fact that the liberal-hating shooter was angry about his FOOD STAMPS being cut off.

Seems like the guy is fully delusional. Their stories tend to by full of unintended irony.

When I read about people doing horrific things, it's almost always due to a neurological/ psychological illness, or drugs. Andrea Yates comes to mind. So altho the temptation is to beat the crap outta the perp before strangling him (or her) slowly, it really warrants a deep deep breath.

Anyone who commits violence in the name of a "cause" obliterates any relevance to the original problem by delusional default. Man's obviously a mentally ill psychopath. On the other hand, when a "church" can perform a violent excorcism on a young girl (beating her for 2 days), and then have the Texas Supreme Court uphold their ignorant actions as a freedom of speech issue, then I must question the role of churches in America.

I AM a Unitarian, a Lay Priest thereof, in fact, although obviously that includes a whole slew of beliefs and even systems, but yeah, I was kinda chuckling to myself at the mere thought of considering UU folk to be the type to lay down and take it.

In fact, I am a little surprised he did NOT get shot, given that he was attacking a Unitarian Church in Tennesse fer cryin out loud.

And yes indeedy, the irony of a right-wingish nutter howling at 'damn liburls' over loss of his food stamps isn't lost on me either.

And I fully concur that a lot of these folk ain't all there upstairs, which is a failure more of our medical care and psychological health systems than any failure of the criminal justice system.
(As previously stated, I also consider drug addition a medical problem rather than a legal/criminal one)

We're seriously needin some prevention on those fronts, but like you and HK Cav have both said before, how DO you heal an entire society ?

Preventing these incidents is better than even stoppin em, but one works with what one has...

It cannot be said enough, those who do not learn from history, are doomed to endlessly repeat it
