Wow. Facts from Rapo. I'm kinda shocked my own self Here's the deal: Production costs (the cost to bring oil up out of the ground) have increased somewhat, but not anywhere near the enough to account for the increase spot price of crude oil. The National Oil Companies (NOCs) have NOT raised taxes recently. So what's causing the big price increase and who's raking in the dough?

This most recent rise in oil prices is caused by several factors:

The decline of the dollar. This alone accounts for roughly 35% of the increased cost of oil in the past 3 years. For this, we can thank Bush and the Fed working hand-in-glove: Bush by causing a huge deficit, and the Fed for making it cheap to do so (and hiding the failures of "trickle-down" economics) by keeping interest rates artifically low.

The invasion of Iraq and the threatened invasion of Iran. Thanks to the previous embargo of Iraq, the country is sitting on the world's second-largest oil supply, and its untapped. Compared to Iraq, all of our untapped oilfields represent just a spit. If the invasion had not taken place, Iraqi oil would now be flowing to France and China.

Increased demand from China, and unecessarily high demand from the USA. The USA consumes approximately 70 barrels of oil per 1000 people per day, one of the highest use rates of the industrialized world. (For comparison, Canada is 71 and Iceland is 70, but Norway is 53, Australia is 44, Japan is 44, Sweden is 40, Germany is 32, Denmark is 32 and China is 6) www.nationmaster.com/graph/ene_oil_con_percap-energy-oil-consumption-p
er-capita

Speculation. The imbalance of supply and demand and geopolitical instability have caused a realtively small portion of the oil supply (spot market for "sweet light crude" represents less than 10% of actual physical sales) to swing the market. The fact is that sour crude sells at a fraction of the cost of sweet crude. Most of the refiners (except Valero) are too damn cheap to recognize the opportunity that sour crude represents, and refuse to invest in desulfurization.

Now, who's raking in the dough? Oil producers, basically. Both NOCs and private firms.
Quote:

In terms of world oil production {as opposed to holdings}... six of the top firms are national oil companies, while ExxonMobil, Royal Dutch Shell, BP and ChevronTexaco represent among the largest oil and gas producers worldwide.

www.rice.edu/energy/research/nationaloil/index.html (As an aside, please notice that the Institute is the James Baker Institute, he of "Iraq Study Group" fame.)

So, what can we do about it? Several things:

1) Introduce trading on the Strategic Reserve. The SR represents a full 70-days of crude oil usage. (That's not the same as releasing the reserve.) In technical terms, that's a shitload of oil.
2) Reduce use. Large industrialized nations have demonstrated that it is not necessary to consume oil at prodigious rates in order to be prosperous.
3) Invest in renewable sources. We will NEVER become dependent on others for solar or wind power.
4) Produce internally. This is the least favorable long-term solution. Oil is used as a feedstock for petrochemicals, and represents the birthright of our descendants.

Just to be clear, I'm all for renewable , natural resources, but it seems we have dunder heads who continue to get in the way of progress. Want to build a wind farm in the Chesapeake Bay ? " Not in my back yard," say the Lib elite, living in their mansions....it would drive down the cost of our homes...err... compromise the natural beauty of the area. Or the enviro whackos, who claim fossil fuels are killing the planet, BUT GIANT WIND MILLS WILL KILL 1000's of birds!

Oh, and then we have the 'Grow corn, and we'll buy your vote " crowd, who some how thinks making car fuel from FOOD is a good idea. It's not. It's a HORRIBLE idea. Worse than tapping every damn well on the planet full open.

I drive in my job, 100% of the time. There is no " taking public transportation " option for me. ZERO. I'm up at 5am to avoid sitting in the morning crunch hour traffic, but beyond that, there's little else I can do.

If cities want to cut back on the power they use, then I'm fine by that, but then they run into the problem of losing out on tax $$ if usage of basic utilities goes down. That's happened in several places, where folks did exactly what the officials told them to do, and it ended up in a tax hike to recoup the loss in revenue !!

Maybe not "worse than" but just as bad. Or... maybe you're right, maybe 'worse than'.

The Bush Administration estimates that expanded offshore drilling could increase oil production by 200,000 bbl. per day by 2030. We use about 20 million bbl. per day, so that would meet about 1% of our demand two decades from now. Meanwhile, efficiency experts say that keeping tires inflated can improve gas mileage 3%, and regular maintenance can add another 4%. Many drivers already follow their advice, but if everyone did, we could immediately reduce demand several percentage points. In other words: Obama is right.

It's funny, really. The party that claims to be about "personal responsibility" and sticking up for yourself and doing things for yourself cries foul when someone actually asks them to check their own freaking tire pressure on their car - something that is PROVEN to increase mileage by 3 to 4 percent.

Okay, forget that it was Obama you heard it from. (And honestly, he shouldn't have been the first person you ever heard this from...) NASCAR says to do it, too. Check their website. If McLame told you to do it, would you think it was a good idea?

Three to four percent isn't a bunch. At current prices, that works out to about 12 to 16 cents per gallon savings for you. According to the Bush Administration's own sources, drilling would get you a three to four CENTS per gallon savings - IN TEN YEARS' TIME!

So, now that you're all done carping about Obama's energy plan, what's yours? What have you got that's better?

If the refineries had simply invested in desulfurization equipment they could have taken advantage of cheap, plentiful sour crude.

Quick! Somebody notify the President!

Oh. Never mind - he's on yet another of his vacations. What is that now, about 125 days a year he vacations?

Show me where Obama said that inflating your tires to their proper pressures and keeping your car properly tuned solves the whole problem.

Maybe YOU should "quote him rite".

I've heard of marriage rites, funeral rites, sacrificial rites, and the Scottish Rite, but I've never heard of the Quote Him Rite. What is it?

Also, please explain to me HOW it is that when Obama points out a few simple things that we could all do to HELP alleviate some of the pain at the pump, he's suddenly the bad guy. I thought the righties were all about boot-straps and up-pulling-of-yourselves and doing it all yourself. Now you're saying that there's nothing we can do, unless Congress votes to say that we can?

Really? Is that where your head's at?

Very sad.

(AURaptor)
Every single night the same arrangement,
I go out and fight the fight.
Still I always feel the strangest strangement,
Nothing here is real nothinng here is right.

I've been making shows of trading blows,
just hoping no one knows.
That I've going through the motions,
walking through the part.
Nothing seems to penetrate my heart.

I was always brave and kind of righteous,
Now I find I'm waviering.
You crawl out of your grave,
You find this fight just doesn't mean a thing.

(Chrisisall)
He ain't got that swing.

(AURaptor)
Thanks for noticing.

(Signy, Rue, and Kwicko)
He does pretty well with fiends from hell,
but lately we can tell.
That He's just going through the motions,
faking it somehow.

(Whozit)
He's not even half the man he..ow

(AURaptor)
Will I stay this way forever,
Sleepwalk through my life's endevor.

(Bush)
How can I repay?

(AURaptor)
Whatever. I don't wanna be...
Going through the motions,
Loosing all my drive.
I can't even see,
If this is really me.
And I just wanna be alive.

The Trolls Among Us

In the late 1980s, Internet users adopted the word “troll” to denote someone who intentionally disrupts online communities. Early trolling was relatively innocuous, taking place inside of small, single-topic Usenet groups. The trolls employed what the M.I.T. professor Judith Donath calls a “pseudo-naïve” tactic, asking stupid questions and seeing who would rise to the bait. The game was to find out who would see through this stereotypical newbie behavior, and who would fall for it. As one guide to trolldom puts it, “If you don’t fall for the joke, you get to be in on it.”

As our emotional investment in the Internet has grown, the stakes for trolling — for provoking strangers online — have risen. Trolling has evolved from ironic solo skit to vicious group hunt.

“Lulz” is how trolls keep score. A corruption of “LOL” or “laugh out loud,” “lulz” means the joy of disrupting another’s emotional equilibrium. “Lulz is watching someone lose their mind at their computer 2,000 miles away while you chat with friends and laugh,” said one ex-troll who, like many people I contacted, refused to disclose his legal identity.

Wrong. In her mind, disagreeing is what makes you a troll. I've been on the recieving end of assbrain's "Troll" rantings before. Best to ignore it or tell her to go fuck her self with a wooden bowl...Well, it's true.........
