Keep the Shiny side up

A couple of days late for the third anniversary of Katrina, but looking to head right up the pipe in the latest estimate.

Hopefully folks will have enough sense to get the hell out of town if things look bad.

I guess this shows Bush isn't too keen on McCain. Otherwise, he'd have used the HARM device to direct the hurricane to N.O. THIS week, instead of next week.

After the Govt has poured in multiple billions of dollars to this corrupt place, I hope they at least saved enough money to buy a bus and hire a bus driver to drive those folks out of the city this time...maybe a bus with twin sidecars.

It's a damn safe bet that Bobby Jindal won't be turning back the National Guard like Blanco did.

The Democratic Mayor of New Orleans had lots of buses the last time AND a plan to use them.

They did forget the bus drivers, misplace the plan, and accidently evacuated the keys prior to Katrina's arrival.

Has anybody thought to call the Mayor's office to let them know about the Hurricane? They kinda missed the last one.

And maybe he could pass the message along to the President and the head of FEMA. They kind of missed the last one, too.

If by missed you mean they relied upon the competence of the State and Local authorities to act upon the warnings that were passed on to them while at the same time coordinating a massive Federal response to come in to assist those authorities in the days and weeks AFTER the event...then you are correct.

Hahahahahahahahahahah - Good one, Zero! If by "coordinating a massive Federal response" you mean the Republican president went on vacation - yet again - and napped through meetings about how bad the storm actually was... then you are correct.

Sifting through the urban legends the Dems cling to so dearly is a job in itself.

The storm, while bad, didn't cause most of the damage. The poorly built levees , which failed, did. Bush could have sent 200,000 men the day after the storm, and not much would have changed.

We've argued this before. The Federal response was to preposition relief workers, supplies, aircraft, and ships in coordination with state and local agencies, the Red Cross, NGO, corporations, etc. Hurricane Plan A...same as always.

One problem created by really big storms is the storm itself. You can't move in the supplies before the storm because the storm might destroy them. That means sitting them in staging areas away from the coast. The storm passes the coast in a fury and then blows itself out over the staging areas slowing their ability to deploy for as much as a day or two AFTER the storm passes the coastline.

For example. Rite Aid Corporation (RAD) a drug company, has a hurrican response plan. They preposition truckloads of supplies capable of augmenting or replacing damaged or destroyed stores (the trucks can operate as mobile stores in case the local one is completely destroyed. Typically they predeploy about 200 miles inland and wait the storm out then start rolling to set up in Rite Aid parking lots in affected areas. They had Rite Aid trucks in place and stores up and running in many areas within about 2-3 days but could not reach New Orleans for over a week because the transportation infrastructure would not allow it (they diverted the initial trucks to refugee centers when it became apparent that they could not immediatly reach the City).

In the case of Katrina the area of destruction was hardly confined to New Orleans. There were hundreds of square miles to travel before reaching the city. Coupled with damaged transportation infrastructure then best case scenarios would not allow signifigant Federal response for several days. In addition full Federal response legally could not begin until requested by State authorities. That request was delayed. Finally the Federal response was to the entire region. While New Orleans and Louisiana was still figuring out their paperwork and deciding what to do other States were on the phone before the storm hit requesting aid.

Does that mean the Katrina response could not have been better? There is always room for improvement. My biggest gripe with Bush's response was that he should have told State and Local officials to shove it and deployed troops to aid the relief effort (like on Wednesday night/Thursday morning of that first week...once it was clear that the Locals were not reacting). I think the sight of a brigade of the 82nd Airborne dropping on top of the Football stadium in New Orleans would have done wonders for local and national morale. Course if he'd have done that then ya'll be screaming about impeaching him for using troops on American soil and usurping the authority of the local black Mayor.

Given the maginitude of the disaster I think we did ok. The storm was unprecedented, the destruction of the infrastructure of the entire region was on a scale comparable to a nuclear attack. I think a little leeway should be granted to everybody (with the exception of the Mayor of New Orleans).

I wonder how much media coverage the Republican convention is going to get if Gustav hits New Orleans during the week of the convention. Some Republican strategists are already calling for a postponement of the convention, according to news sources.

Now that would be poetic justice...

:)

FYI - anyone else notice that weapon and ammo sales in the region have skyrocketed ?

I'm all for defending ones stuff from looters and renegades, but I'd really prefer not to see a block war - I sincerely hope they use restraint.

We have some of those little bitty boats and a stash of MREs and bottled water left over from our Katrina response, stockpiled through a local charity, so what little bit our precious few can do will get done, if it needs to be.

If Ray Nagin tries to order the police to confiscate guns this time around I think the Feds and the new Governor Bobby Jindal will put his ass in prison. New laws and court decisions should mean Nagin won't be able to declare himself dictator of New Orleans this time around.
