Being interviewed on the Jim Lear News hour, James Earl Carter, our 39th President (and worst) refered to B.O. (who'll never be President) as "this black boy"....... HUH! Is it old age, or just losing his mind!? I bet for many of you this is the first you're hearing of this, why? If G.H.W. Bush had said something this stupid, I bet everyone would have heard about it, YA THINK!?

Entire quote: "I think it has already sent a wave of approbation and admiration in many countries around the world, just knowing that this black boy, who grew up with just a loving mother and grandparents — and that was about all he had to start with! – has now had a chance to become the Democratic nominee for president."

For the record, Carter was referring to when Obama was a boy, and Obama clearly was, and still is, black. "Black boy" would be an accurate and not racially denigrating term for Obama in his youth.

It's absolutely no slur in the full context of the sentence. Trying to make something out of it is stupid and deceitful. Trying to say that any Republican saying it would have been dis-embowled over it is argueably legitimate.

Hello,

It seems that you needed to quote Carter out of context to make him say something denigrating about Obama. Meanwhile, you denigrated Carter in-context by calling him an old fart.

I am siccing AARP on you. ;-)

I agree with your interpretation BUT the line could be reasonable interpreted in a negative fashion.

I agree that if a Republican had referred to Obama as "this black boy" then people, especially Democrats, would jump to the negative conclusion. Compare the negative press a certain Republican got for praising Strom Thurrmond at his funeral because of Strom's comments thirty years before he died to the lack of coverage a certain former Grand Wizard Democratic Senator got for using the N-word in a far more recent interview.

But as for this case, no harm, no foul.

This does have merit. Its all about perception.

G.W. says: "This here black boy raised himself up and is now running for the highest office in the land..." would be considered HIGHLY racist...

But if Al Sharpton said it, or Jesse Jackson, or Bill Clinton, then its "cute". It's "Southern"

Im so sick of the damn double-standard.

Do you not know the difference between referring to someone as a boy in the past when he was actually a boy; and referring to him as a boy in the present when he is an adult ?

Rue-by,

So, its ok to call someone a "white-boy" but not a "black-boy".

Is it the inference that they are child-like when they should be an adult that is considered "offensive"? Or is it offensive on a racial matter?

Again, I find it irritating that we, as Americans, are voluntarily stiffiling our free speech...so as not to offend anyone.

Give me a break. We all have the right to say whatever the hell we feel like. If someone doesnt like it...tough.

And isn't that exactly the stink you're raising over it here? If you on the right don't find it racist at all, why was it brought up in the first place? Because you're trying to make it an issue, that's why. YOU are the ones calling it racist.

And you say it wasn't an issue when Clinton did it. That's a lie. You're lying, straight up. It WAS at least a BIT of an issue. Remember it being on the news? Obviously you remember it, so it's kind of hard to say that nothing was said about it.

And yes, people like Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter DO tend to get more of a pass on this kind of colloquial speech from black people than do haughty New England elitists like Bush, simply because Clinton and Carter are KNOWN to have grown up around and with black people - as equals and friends, not as housekeepers and maids. I'm not saying that it's fair or that it's right, but that's how it is perceived. Hey, Wulfie, YOU see a black area and assume that it must be a high-crime ghetto full of crack dealers and hoes... It ain't RIGHT, but that's what you see and what you say.

You have to ask yourself, is it different if, say, someone like Forest Whitaker says of Kobe Bryant "that boy can really play some ball" rather than if someone like, say, former Grand Wizard of the KKK David Duke were to say the exact same thing? They're both saying the exact same words, but their differing stances on the issue of race tend to "color" their words a bit differently. You see what I mean?

If Spike Lee calls me his "nigga", it's not quite exactly the same as if Bill Orally calls me his "nigger". Do you see that there IS a bit of a difference, depending on who's doing the saying?

Now, if the black community at large has an issue with Carter's remarks, I'm sure he'd be happy to apologize, because I think it's clear that he meant no disrespect to Obama; in fact, he's quite an admirer of this "black boy". Will Limbaugh offer the same apology for all the race-baiting things he's said about Obama, because it's obvious that the things he's saying are said from a position of no respect whatsoever.

You DO see the hypocrisy in giving Carter grief over it, though, right? I mean, if you don't like that he said it AND IT WASN'T PERCEIVED AS A BIG DEAL (which is the way you say IT SHOULD BE in the first place), then, in your own words... TOUGH!

And I think Fremmie pointed out quite eloquently in an earlier thread: you DO have the right to say whatever the hell you want. And we have an equal right to mock the living shit out of you for being a fucking moron. If you don't like it... tough! Grow a thicker skin, put on your big-boy pants, and grow a pair.

In response, here is an excerpt from Clerks 2...

Randal Graves: Since when did porch monkey suddenly become a racial slur?

Dante Hicks: When ignorant racists started saying it a hundred years ago!

Randal Graves: Oh, bullshit! My grandmother used to call me a porch monkey all the time when I was a kid because I'd sit on the porch and stare at my neighbors!

Dante Hicks: Despite the fact that your grandmother might've used it as a term of endearment for you, it's still a racial slur! It'd be like your grandmother calling you a little kike!

Randal Graves: Oh, it is not. Plus, my grandmother had nothing but the utmost respect for the Jewish community. When I was a kid she told me to always treat the Jewish kids well, or they'd put the sheeny curse on me.

Dante Hicks: What the fuck, man?

Randal Graves: What?

Dante Hicks: Sheeny's a racial slur, too!

Randal Graves: Oh, it is not.

Dante Hicks: Yes, it is!

Randal Graves: She never called any Jews 'sheeny', she just used to say sheeny curse a lot. It was cute!

Dante Hicks: It wasn't cute! It was racist!

Randal Graves: I disagree, man, she was just an old timer, that's the way people talked back then! Didn't mean they were racist... But my grandmother did refer to a broken beer bottle once as a nigger knife... You know, come to think of it, my grandmother was kind of a racist.

Dante Hicks: You think?

Randal Graves: Well, I still don't think porch monkey should be considered a racial term. I mean, I've always used it to describe lazy people, not lazy black people! I think if we really tried, we could re-claim porch monkey, and save it.

Dante Hicks: It can't be saved, Randal! The sole purpose for its creation, the only reason it exists in the first place, is to disparage an entire race! And even if it could be saved, you can't save it because you're not black!

Randal Graves: Well listen to you! Telling me I can't do something because of the color of my skin! You're the racist! I'm taking it back, you watch!

[customers enter]

Randal Graves: Hey, what can I get for you, you little porch monkey?
[beat]
Randal Graves: Its cool, I'm taking it back.

Dude, that's one of funniest scenes ever. I do think we can "re-claim porch monkey" but it might take a generation of concerted effort.
