Haven't seen anything substantive that would make me believe McCain is 'irrational', as SignyM trys to portray him. He cusses and has a temper. Ooooh. The fact that he's been able to amass quite a fortune, become a senior Senator, and be nominated to run for President argues against any suggestion that he can't handle pressure or is incapable.

Nobody knows what the Vice President does. Other than presiding over the Senate, the Vice Pres. has no Constitutionally defined role. Each VP decides for themselves what role they want to play and hope the Pres. will let them do something constructive. Traditionally the VP's role has been limited to sitting around waiting for the Pres. to kick the bucket, but in recent years they have been in the puppet master role, running the shadow government from a secret bunker location.

A Youtube clip segment is your argument?
In this day of 24/7 video, you could compile a similar bunch of clips on anyone who is in the public eye. Big deal.

McCain's got lots of money, he gambles a few thousand a trip. He plays with the money he brings and doesn't take house markers. He's not losing the house payment or the kid's college money.

Saw some stuff about him not showing winnings or losses on his tax forms or getting any W2Gs. Whoever wrote that doesn't know much tax law. In table games like craps, you net your winnings against your wagers and report any net profit for the year. Most folks don't win, so have nothing to report. You can only claim the losses if you're a professional gambler. Also, W2Gs aren't generally issued for table games, only slots, video poker, etc.

Again, big deal.

There's too much "out there" to say that McCain DOESN'T have a temper. And when you're running for President, you don't joke about bombing Iran. What a flippin' boneheaded thing to say! What's his excuse? He thought it was "cute"?!?

AFA the gambling is concerned, it's not the reporting (or lack of) his winnings and losses. It's the motivation behind it... described even by his friends as the rush of adrenaline. Not too many posts ago, you mentioned... negatively... JFK's hidden health issue. The hidden health issue was that he was taking a corticosteroid... lots of it... to stop his back pain, which may have accounted for his puffy face and unusual bronze skintone.

Now, the relevant downside of corticosteroids is irritability/ hostility. At the same time, some people feel on top of the world. If temper/ temperment concerns you when it applies to Democrats... and it seems to... then why would it not be a concern with Republicans? Do we want another Kennedy, or another Tricky Dick in the WH?

Setting aside McCain's temper ... which truly concerns me... there are his policies, which repel me.

Now try Obama + temper.

"Obama supporters say that Obama had stepped away from his seat and asked someone else to vote for him, not an uncommon practice considering the thousands of votes each session. His proxy, however, accidentally voted against his wishes. When Obama asked that the record reflect that he voted the wrong way, Hendon publicly accused Obama of duplicity. Hendon has never been shy about holding back his feelings, and he had a special way of penetrating Obama’s usually smooth exterior. Soon, the two men were shouting at each other on the senate floor. They took their disagreement into a nearby room, and a witness said that Obama had to be physically restrained."

Ever play craps at a casino? It does provide a rush, and is a communal experience among all the players at the table. It's all of you as a group against the house, and emotions go from high to low and back in a few seconds. Everyone cheers a point made or groans if you crap out. Not sure why you'd consider this a bad thing.

Obama, on the other hand, plays poker. Poker is a game of deceit, where you try to bluff and fool your opponents. It's every man for himself, trying to defeat all the other players.

Getting a bit off the subject, perhaps, but I wanted to interject...

You should note that several states have legal poker parlors, because in the words of those states, Poker is considered a game of SKILL, not a game of chance (hence, not technically "gambling").

It's a gross misrepresentation to characterize poker solely as a "game of deceit, where you try to bluff and fool your opponents". Yes, there ARE bluffs involved, but if you don't have the skills to play the game, you are an easy mark and your money will be gone quite quickly. A truly gifted poker player can tell you, with a remarkable degree of accuracy, what you're thinking, what you're likely to do, and even what cards you're holding - often even down to what suit your cards are.

Can a gifted craps player tell you what you're going to roll?

First mention of McCain's war record in this thread was by Kwicko.

"Yes, for some... like those who call John McCane a "war hero" - but who denigrated John Kerry's service to his country and wore their precious little "purple heart band-aids" at the last Republican convention, and who supported the Swift-Boat bunch.

Yeah, it seems SOME people really do differentiate between which side of the aisle you sit on as to your "equality", whether it be equality of gender, equality of service, or equality of race.

Some people..."

Still not sure who this "John McCane" guy is, BTW.

If you have any evidence of folks in this thread stating that "...McCain's status as a war victim (POW) somehow makes him Presidential material.", rather than just responding to slurs and cheap shots like Kwicko's and yours (Signym - "And it's not as if Kerry went A.W.O.L. from some uber-kushy party post...", for example.), please cite it.

Again, you wanna discuss issues, fine. You wanna do character assassination, please don't.

Well, since you're the arbiter of all that is fair, maybe you could, just once, show a little fairness in the whole "character assassination" game of yours. You call out liberals and Democrats on it constantly, yet you never, but NEVER, call out any of the local Republicans when they do it, such as:

With the clear implication that maybe someone ELSE in the race ISN'T a "real" American?

I believe in proportionate response. The two quotes you show are about the only ones in this thread even slightly disparaging of the Dems, and the second is a phrase buried in a much longer discussion of the strategy behind choosing Gov. Palin. Compare and contrast with the repeated direct attacks on both Gov. Palin and Sen. McCain by yourself, SignyM, et al.
