Kirsten Powers (a Democratic strategist and former Clinton Administration official) is a columnist for the New York Post. She writes about John McCain's pick of Sarah Palin:

Quote:

SHE'S just a beauty queen.

She's another Dan Quayle.

And ironically, the biggest criticism of Sarah Palin, John McCain's veep choice, is she has no experience. Funny, coming from the Barack Obama camp.

Following McCain's announcement of Palin - the first female to be put on a GOP ticket for the White House, and only the second in US history - the Obama campaign skipped the niceties and blasted her as the "former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience."

She's also a governor of Alaska (my home state), the first woman in that office and the youngest elected in state history. She has an 80-plus percent approval rating. She has turned the state upside down with her reformist zeal and has made enemies of the Republican establishment.

And she can talk energy policy, one of the biggest issues facing this country.

Is she a gamble? Definitely. But so is Barack Obama, who has himself dismissed experience as a prerequisite for leadership, despite his spot atop the Democratic ticket.

At this point, Palin is so unknown, there's no way to make a clear judgment about her. But listening to Obama supporters take to the airwaves to shriek with indignation about her lack of experience is just a little too rich. Where were they when Obama, two years into the Senate, announced his candidacy for president?

One Obama supporter and political operative blogged, "In picking an unknown, untested half-a-term governor from Alaska . . . John McCain is following in a long line of reckless men who have rolled the dice for a beauty queen."

Do we really have to do this again?

No sooner was Hillary Rodham Clinton out of the race, and a new woman is in the cross hairs.

On CNN, during a discussion about whether it was appropriate for Palin to accept this job when she has a baby, Dana Bash pointed out it's unlikely anyone would ask this of a male candidate.

I can't help wondering if this is a trap. The McCain camp watched and learned as Obama supporters offended Hillary supporters by their treatment of her. The McCainiacs had to know that this group is incapable of behaving, that Palin would bring out their worst instincts.

One top Republican said to me: "Just wait until she is debating Joe Biden and he starts attacking or condescending to her. Hillary voters are going to say, 'Oh yeah, I remember this.' "

The McCain camp has already made clear it stands at the ready to scoop up these voters. Yesterday, Palin proudly acknowledged her historic selection, the candidacy of Hillary Rodham Clinton and the woman who paved the way for her, Geraldine Ferraro.

Ferraro told me she's excited for another woman to be on a presidential ticket. She sees Palin as a risky choice - but also dismissed the idea that she's unqualified.

And she rejected the idea that all the so-called "Hillary voters" would be repelled by Palin's staunch anti-abortion views. These voters know the Senate will have a veto-proof Democratic majority, so that lessens the potency of that issue.

Howard Wolfson, Hillary's top strategist, said "it won't help with most Hillary voters, but it could help with some."

"Some" of 18 million people is what the McCain camp is after.

The other potential trap is luring the Obama campaign onto the "experience" field. The early conventional wisdom says McCain's pick was boneheaded because it takes the experience issue off the table. But it seems that it has done the opposite: The importance of experience is the topic of the day.

The more Democrats complain about this, the more Republicans can turn it on them and say, "If you are so concerned about the amount of experience of the vice president, what about the top of your ticket?"

Obama's argument thus far has been that experience isn't what counts; it's judgment. By attacking the Republican woman relentlessly on this issue, Democrats are undermining their own man.

The press who attack her are going to make ass's of themselves, this will just cause the right to bring up B.O.'s lack of experiance and Bidens hair plugs. The media looked like whores following B.O. around over seas and the mass's know it. Palin is new, yes she is a rookie, but so was Babe Ruth once.

My problem with her is that she was chosen not for whatever qualifications she may have, but because she's a woman.

It can be said they picked B.O. because he's black, and he's on the "TOP" of the ticket. Did millions of Democrats pick him because he's black or a new face?

John Lee, conspiracy therapist at Hollywood award-winner History Channel-mocked SNL-spoofed PirateNew.org wooHOO!!!!!!

Who is Sarah Palin? Here's some basic background from MoveOn.org:

Quote:

She was elected Alaska's governor a little over a year and a half ago. Her previous office was mayor of Wasilla, a small town outside Anchorage. She has no foreign policy experience.

Palin is strongly anti-choice, opposing abortion even in the case of rape or incest.

She supported right-wing extremist Pat Buchanan for president in 2000.

Palin thinks creationism should be taught in public schools.

She's doesn't think humans are the cause of climate change.

She's solidly in line with John McCain's "Big Oil first" energy policy. She's pushed hard for more oil drilling and says renewables won't be ready for years. She also sued the Bush administration for listing polar bears as an endangered species—she was worried it would interfere with more oil drilling in Alaska.

How closely did John McCain vet this choice? He met Sarah Palin once at a meeting. They spoke a second time, last Sunday, when he called her about being vice-president. Then he offered her the position.

Sheeple go Baaaaarack to sleep. Enjoy your global scamming tax to United Nations Corp and another 50-million abortions, to make room for another 50-million illegal aliens.

One GREAT thing about Palin that no other governor in history can say, is Alaskan residents get PAID over $3,000/year to live in Alaska, funded by oil leases to British Petroleum (which exports most Alaskan oil to Commie China, Japan and Mexico).

That can be done in every state, and by the feds, if the crooks stopped looting $70-Trillion/year from CAFR "pension" funds.

What's the odds of Palin doing that as VP? ZERO.

The best female candidate, best black candidate (who is actually a US citizen), real anti-war candidate is Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney of the Green Party. And she has a female VP.

Obama and Biden won't need to attack Palin:
Women's groups will be going after her...
PETA is already going after her,
environmentalists really really hate her,
educators think that she is the worst possible choice,

so Obama & Biden can be very very polite, because as people find out who she is, they will feel that McCain has thrown away any chance of getting their votes.

A 77 year old candidate cannot select a nitwit to be a heartbeat away from the Presidency!

The Dems can spin it all day long, but it keeps coming back to the fact that Obama passed on Hillary for VP. And the liberal media will have to live with themselves in anguish and wallowing misery when Obama loses because they outdid themselves this time, trashing an electable moderate like Hillary, and throwing their blind support to the radical tenderfoot Obama. Maybe in four years they'll nominate Betty Shabbazz or Achmedinijhad himself. That seems a logical progression of the radical leftist Soros money that drives the loony left dominanace of the Democrats.

I think your right that the Bush connection doomed her chances. The other major problem with Rice is her not being married. The American people seem to be ready for a minority of female candidate but a single person in the White house is still not acceptable.

Of course, it COULD be that I would gladly vote for a woman, but not THIS woman - any you'd gladly vote for a black candidate, but not THIS black candidate.

not true at all, especially being that even if she were a black man from chicago she'd still be on mccain's ticket, which most definitely would not be what democrats want.

I would have been behind Hillary 100% had she won the democratic nomination, I think it's sad that we see a woman running for president as something that's amazing. It shouldn't be amazing at all.

As for Palin, I'm not dismissive of her qualifications, I don't know her qualifications, she appeared out of thin air as far as my knowledge of her is concerned.

The only thing I do know about her is that she was chosen to be the token female on mccain's ticket, and she was chosen to bring as many of the hillary supporters to mccain as possible.

I had no idea that Joe Biden was black... OR from Chicago...

As for "qualifications", Obama served in the state legislature, serving a district with roughly ten times as many people than Palin's little hamlet had when she was mayor. He was in the state legislature longer than she was mayor of her tiny town, too. And he's been a U.S. Senator longer than she's been Governor of Alaska. For the record, he's one of two senators, responsible for and answerable to a population of over 12 million. She's governor of a state with a population of about 600,000 - so her "experience" is as a representative of about 1/20th as many people. Hardly what I'd call "executive" experience. By that token, I'm more qualified than the CEO of GE, since I've owned my own business (and been CEO *and* CFO of it) for 16 years.

So your ideal candidate would have MORE experience than Obama by having less experience. Is that about right?

And if your answer is that Obama's merely a Senator, which in no way prepares him for the Presidency... well, what's McCain's position, again? Senator, isn't it?

No, what makes McCain's pick boneheaded and irresponsible is that he met with his VP choice once (twice?) before choosing her as a running mate. He calls her a "soul-mate" on the strength of that. Nobody knows, or has any way of guessing if she would be a good President. And 9 weeks is hardly enough time to honestly find out--maybe not for political junkies, but for the general populous? Not on your life!

McCain and his handlers have no intention of letting the American people make an informed decision. All decisions regarding Ms. Palin will be of the snap variety, just as the GOP likes 'em.

And God forbid we should ever be forced to listen to a substantive debate on the issues! Palin is McCain's get-out-of-real-debate-free card. All the time the media and we Americans will have to devote to figuring out who the hell his VP is, will be time he doesn't have to answer for his many, many gaffes and inconsistencies.

The worst thing I can say about his choice is that in making it he is not giving American's his most responsible decision, but rather the latest of his most reckless ones. He is, in essence, gaming the system--who in their right mind wants such outlandish irresponsibility in the most powerful man in the entire world???

On second thought, the Neo-cons and their apologists have such contempt for the idea of responsible government, maybe there is a voting block that finds this kind of disrespect for the office of POTUS "refreshing" and "cool."

When Obama first appeared on the stage of the Democratic Presidential Debate over a year ago, I was thinking, "Who the heck is this guy?" It took me quite some time before I got a good sense of what he was about and what to expect from him as President. And throughout his campaign he has shown shrewd and responsible judgement (minus the whole FISA thing--sucks big time).

This appointment of a virtually unknown and untested candidate this late in the election is foolhardy at best--at best! And I'm sorry, but after 8 years of the most ruinous administration in a generation, when it comes to the GOP, I don't assume the best.

Knocking Bush for being a C student only endeared him to the nation of C students. Knock Palin for having kids, for having a kid who's having a baby, for anything that is part of her normalness -- a normalness that looks very familiar to so many millions of Americans -- well, you do this at your own peril. Assuming she's still on the ticket two weeks from now, she will be a much tougher opponent than anyone expects. You live in a country that voted for Dan Quayle.

Sadly, people don't vote on issues, they vote on personality. Or on what they think is the candidate's personality.

That ends up in a race for 'branding' - each side trying to be the first to stick some kind of positive image (hopefully in a short, single, easy to remember catchphrase: 'McCain - a man of his word') on their candidate, while sticking something negative on the other candidate.

To that extent repubicans have failed to stick anything meaningfully negative on Obama (except for the nutcases who think he's Muslim). But Obama's race will do that well enough anyway, due to latent and not so latent racism. No one is going to say, or needs to say - Obama, he's black and not like us.

They've also failed to stick anything positive on McCain - a man of his word ? Which one ? A maverick ? So, who's running his show ? McCain for change ? That one's already taken - it just brings Obama to mind. On the flip side, the democrats have failed to closely associate McCain with Bush and brand him as 'more of the same'.

To the extent that Palin's real story comes out, she will be a complicated and contradictory figure. That will make 'branding' her (as in 'name brand', not what you do with cattle) more difficult. Though not impossible. After all, they were after-the fact able to hide dubya's drunk-driving, drug use, failure to finish his tour of duty (in the Air National Guard), ability to drive any business under, lack of a real job, AND his wealthy, privileged upbringing and turn him into a regular, decent, hard-working guy.

It'll be interesting to see how quickly and well the Rove machine can spin her image into something simple, easy to remember, and acceptable.

You live in a country where one out of three girls get pregnant before they are 20. You live in a nation of C students. You live in a country that voted for Dan Quayle.

there for a while i was hoping for a sane, rational and intelligent leader in the White House... but history keeps proving me wrong.

It is somewhat amusing to hear the Democrat hacks try to tear down Palin using her pregnant daughter and Downs syndrome baby. Their attempts to marginalize Palin are exactly what McCain was hoping for. The Dems are alienating their own base as the attacks on Palin instead hit home on millions of democrat moms and grandparents in the same situation as Palin and her daughter.

All the GOP has is negative smears and Governor MacGuffin to keep McCain's presidential hopes afloat. All short term stop-gaps, really. The political equivolent of drilling for oil to gain energy independence (oh wait...).

Just wait a day or two, Kirk. This pregnancy flap will fade fast. Troopergate, the Dominionists, Feminists For Life, and Earmarkgate will not. Even Polar-bear-blood-for-oil has more legs than Bristol's follies. Then McCain will have to scramble for another distraction from his miserable chances of gaining the White House. Not to worry, surely a high-roller like ol' "Double Down" McCain can find a new, confusing and high-stakes way to gamble on our future to shore up his naked ambition! Surely!

Hey, hey, hey, don't be mean. We don't have to be mean, because, remember, no matter where you go, there you are.

Hey, I have a brain-damaged child, and I STILL don't get picking Palin!

You want to feel marginalized? How about not being able to afford health care for your child? So a good question for Palin would be: Given the high cost of care for a special needs child, how do you feel about universal health coverage? Maybe she's one of those Human life begins at conception and ends at birth Republicans

I have a vote and I'm not afraid to use it!

"It is somewhat amusing to hear the Democrat hacks try to tear down Palin using her pregnant daughter and Downs syndrome baby."

I haven't heard a SINGLE democrat, hack or otherwise, say anything negative about the pregnant daughter or Down's syndrome baby. What I HAVE heard is a lot of repubican hacks (like you perhaps ?) complaining about how unfair the democrats are for picking on poor, helpless Palin.

So who's picking on her then ?

But I see the spin already. Poor helpless Palin. Burdened and still struggling to make a better world. Damn democrats for picking on her. At least she can get the sympathy vote.

Why, I can smell Rove right around the corner, can't you ?

So anyway, apparently McCain beat his own sympathy vote to death by bringing up being a POW (which he never talks about) waaaaaayyy to often.

How much you wanna' bet Rove plays it up for Palin ? Vote for heroic martyr of the year ! And stop picking on her ! (And stop beating your wife too, while you're at it.)
