The Repo con, breakin' it down for ya by chrisisall

In case you missed it, and I would bet that most of this crowd did, Barack Obama was interviewed one-on-one by Bill O'Reilly. Part 1 aired last night, and the rest of the long interview will be seen Mon, Tues, & Wed. next week.

You judge for yourself, but the event was quite remarkable. Like Hillary before, Obama went into the pit with no pre-conditions...everything was on the table. The back & forth questions and answers between the two of them is something that no one has ever seen before with Obama. I highly recommend that you see it next week.

On another note...I have to say that MSNBC's coverage of the Republican Convention over 4 days was vastly superior to Fox News' coverage...by a mile. I didn't think that was remotely possible. While Fox was doing interviews and punditry, MSNBC was actually showing the speeches and films. Amazing! I don't understand what happened, except to imagine a coordinated conspiracy by NBC/MSNBC to lay off their normal anti-Republican agenda, and just report...and report they did...nothing cut , nothing edited, they just showed it all. And their limited panel discussions and interpretations of events was extremely fair...all this while I suspect they were cringing with every speech and Obama blasting, especially from Guiliani, Palin, and Huckabee. Whatever it was, it was a breath of fresh air from what they normally do. Emmy Awards are forthcoming.

Its worth watching. I wonder why Obama decided to do O'Reilly...sure, he promised he would. But why, I wonder, did he decided to do it this week and NOT next week and why did the whole interview come together so quickly in a 'take it now and air it Thursday or no interview' kinda fashion.

I wonder if it was because the Republicans went out and found a more qualified woman to stand beside McCain.

Hero...he did it for the same reason Hillary did it, and Kerry did it. He knows the viewership of The Factor, double that of all the other cable news shows combined, is likely 90% against him, so what's he got to lose. If he can show openness and answer tough direct questions, that impresses people. I was certainly impressed. I heard Obama say that The Surge was "a remarkable success", but he stopped short of saying that he would admit it in that simple a context. You know Barack, he has to find the complications and nuances in every situation. Bill said that Obama was right about voting not to go to war and Obama thanked him for that. Honestly, I thought O'Reilly was too abusive to him....it looked and sounded dis-respectful. I know that's his trademark, but jeeesh, Obama is the Presidential nominee. You've got to back off a bit and give the man some breathing room. Next week they delve into Rev Wright, Bill Ayers, Rezco, etc. Also will talk about the race card, Hillary, economics, energy, etc. It's more than a little fascinating to see. Obama's own supporters are likely not watching, but they really should. They'd be proud of the way he hangs tough, looks Bill squarely in the eyes, and gives real answers. My entire opinion of Hillary was changed dramatically when she went on O'Reilly's show. I saw and heard things from her I had never known about her. I know it's silly, but I liked her a lot after going on that show. Maybe I'll become an Obama supporter by the end of next week, or maybe not. Either way, he's earned respect points aplenty from the other side.

Cites, please. I know Countdown has beaten O'Reilly at least a couple different times, so I don't really believe that his numbers are "double that of all ohter cable news shows combined."

FOX makes a number of claims that, if true, explain why the Dem's are crazy to boycott them.

First, MSNBC is not even on at MSNBC...nobody watches it.

Second, FOX has the most diverse viewers. CNN and MSNBC has a substantially large lead in Democratic viewers. FOX is a pretty even split.

Third, O'Reilly has ratings that far outstrip those of his competition.

So talking on CNN and MSNBC is like preaching to the choir. Thats fine, but both sides have fired up bases now, they need the independents and wavering moderates from both parties. Speaking on FOX allows Obama to speak to those who would not normally tune in to the other channels. It also takes away the Republican line of attack...'will speak to Iran but not to FOX'. Its good politics.

So they are right...HUGE difference. Not quite the numbers they claim...but close to twice the number of others combined.

Heck, O'Reilly's numbers rival Hanna Montana making him one of the most watched cable shows and a potential pop music star.

What floors me is that of all the very intelligent and diverse right-of-center thinkers on this board, none of you have noticed that she's a nobody, a light-weight. Not one has said, "The juries still out on Caribou Barbie." Where would you draw the line? A child? A trained monkey? Would y'all accept a horse if it could tap out a pro-life message?

I mean, when I was confronted with Obama last year at the first Democratic Debate, I was thinking, "What the hell is that guy doing up there? Freshman senator? He made one nice speech 4 years ago! What is he, 30?" It took him quite a while to find his voice over the course of those interminable debates and to start impressing me. I've never seen a better managed presidential campaign. Time and again his decisions have been impressively shrewd. And despite the media's favorite fiction that his position constantly changes, I've been researching the guy from the beginning and his positions have been remarkably stable. Of course he's shifted his rhetoric, but the content has remained on message. What I mean is, as far as a politico in his position can impress a flaky anarchist like me, he won me over.

But y'all just jump into bed with Ms. Walking Public Relations Stunt from the get go. Seriously, what gives?
