Scientologists Declare War on South Park: Where's George Clooney?
by Press Release
Mar 21, 2006

Los Angeles -- Reports indicate Church of Scientology and Tom Cruise pressured network to cancel a South Park show satirizing the Hollywood religion. Katharine DeBrecht -- author of "Help! Mom! Hollywood's in My Hamper" -- condemns the actions as censorship and asks "Where's George Clooney now?"
Best-selling conservative children's author Katharine DeBrecht is pointing to recent reports of a conflict between the creators of the "South Park" cartoon and the Church of Scientology as yet more proof of Hollywood liberal hypocrisy, and she is pointing a finger at Oscar winner George Clooney in the process.

Recent reports in the respected trade magazine Daily Variety suggest that the Church of Scientology used its well known celebrity muscle to pressure Comedy Central into pulling an upcoming episode of "South Park" that satirized the religion. According to the publication, the clash between Scientology and the South Park creators is escalating in the wake of this latest move. The controversy first gained national attention earlier this week when Isaac Hayes, the voice of the popular character "Chef", quit over an episode mocking Scientology and its most famous adherent, Tom Cruise.

Daily Variety reports a rumor suggesting that Cruise stepped in at the request of the Church of Scientology, by saying he would refuse to help promote his upcoming movie "Mission: Impossible 3" unless the episode was pulled. Comedy Central is owned by Viacom, the media conglomerate that also owns Paramount, the studio behind the "Mission: Impossible" franchise.

"These reports, if true, smack of exactly the kind of strategy Muslims have been using in terms of the Mohammed cartoons -- stifling free speech because it sometimes offends religious beliefs, 'says best-selling children's author Katharine DeBrecht, whose new book "Help! Mom! Hollywood's in My Hamper!" (Kids Ahead; hardcover: $15.95; ISBN 0976726912) also satirizes Scientology and Cruise, as well as a number of other Hollywood personalities. "While I am not a fan of 'South Park' -- and I certainly don't think it's an appropriate program for kids -- it's a show that has consistently skewered many religions, including Christianity and Judaism. What makes Scientology different? We must all defend the show's right to parody this religion and Tom Cruise, its most outspoken advocate.

"I also satirize Scientology and other trendy Hollywood religions in my new book as something called 'Toenailology,'" adds DeBrecht. "Does this mean the Church of Scientology will come after me next?" DeBrecht adds that Scientology -- which has many Hollywood stars and power brokers in its ranks, including John Travolta, Kirstie Alley, Beck, Jenna Elfman, and Lisa Marie Presley -- teaches that humans can reach a godlike state, something she believes is opposed to traditional values.

"Where are George Clooney and his brave Hollywood friends?" notes DeBecht, chiding the outspoken liberal who made a particular point during the Oscars of patting himself on the back for having the courage to call Joseph McCarthy a bad guy -- 50 years and countless books and documentaries after the fact. "Here's censorship happening right under Hollywood's nose, but instead of confronting an actual free speech issue, all these brave liberals souls don't want to take on a clear violation of free speech when it involves a big-name actor who might be able to give them a job somewhere down the road."

Didn't the guy that voiced Chef quit over the episode because he's a scientologist and the episode was making fun of it?

Which is totally hypocritical given that he made fun of other religions and didn't have a problem with it.

Not to mention the fact that he didn't quit when the episode originally aired. Something fishy about that...

Like my father says, "It's alright to make fun of other people but you can't make fun of me."

It was all fine for Isaac Hayes to be a part of all those episoide that made fun of other religions but the moment you make fun of his it's personal.

I say that we, as fans of South Park, boycot MI:3. It is we fans that make the movies money and if they want to act like petty little 3 year olds then we should treat them as such.

I don't think that anyone has to be a South Park fan to boycott MI:3. You just have to have an apprecitation for what makes an MI. Which wasn't in the second one because Tom Cruise has no talent and had control of that one. So, if he has control of this one, how good could it really be?

Don't get me wrong, from an action movie point of view, MI:2 was ok. But, taking into account what is expected from a MI movie (like the first movie) MI:2 was rather lacking to say the least.

I for one won't be giving MI:3 any money for that reason alone. This South Park thing is, for me, something that just gets added to the list.

Most Memorable Bad Scene, MI2:

Motorcycle 1 approaches Motorcycle 2.

Motorcycles are travelling at least 30 MPH.

Occupants of Motorcycles leap up and collide.

Occupants of Motorcycles experience a relative impact of at least 60MPH.

Occupants of Motorcycles fall.

Occupants of Motorcycles get up and do Kung-Fu.

Well, my motorcycle went down at about 35 MPH on an ice patch and slid for 20 feet, and I got right up that second to raise my bike and see how bad the winshield was smashed. I could have also started to do Kung-Fu if necessary. Adreneline can do a lot!
(Okay, it doesn't keep bones from breaking, but it's an action movie, man. You want reality, watch Last Action Hero )

I'm with AnthonyT on this one. Even if it's an action movie, there are still some things that you just can't do because they take away from the fantasy by being really really not real. That scene crossed that line by leaps and bounds.

Again, let's all remember MI the original.

If you want to go there, Tom doing that running kick/back flip in the hallway came closer to that for me (besides, they cut the endless scene of Cruise in the hospital with cracked ribs, ruptured spleen, and skull fracture; it slowed the pace at the end....)
The first MI flick was definitly a better 'MI' movie, but I found MI2 highly entertaining for what it was.

Yep, he did.

Definitely hypocritical since he was fine making fun of other religions, but the second they poke fun at his he quits & Tom & his scientologist buddies use their underhanded tactics to have the episode pulled.

What a crock.

Deadwood, Season 2, Episodes 1 & 2 Swearengen was hamburger and Bullock had a concussion. Sol Star was recovering for days in bed.

This is how I wish all action movies were. Like in Die Hard movie 1, it's always better to see the Hero suffer. Limping, bruised, bleeding, wincing. And winning anyway. Rambo III is the anti-Die Hard. Get shot through the torso, burn the hole with gunpowder, climb a cliff the next day.

But I digress.

I'm glad for Southpark's stance against censorship. I'm dismayed at Scientology's stance for censorship.

I'm glad for the Southpark episode lampooning Chef's return from the 'Super Adventure Club,' and subsequent resurrection as 'Darth Chef.'

To me, 'Action Movie' is exactly Rambo III. Dramatic movie containing action is like First Blood, Die Hard, Serenity, Empire Strikes Back, Defiance (see that one? It's great), etc.
If the hero doesn't pay some price for his actions, it's a cartoon.
But there's a time for those too.

Exactly. It wasn't in the movie (though this is the first I've heard of that scene). Thus the really really non-reality. Plus, I wouldn't buy the hospital thing anyway. They would have been puddles.

But that's just IMO.

True, MI:2 was an entertaining movie. Just wasn't a MI movie. That's all I was going for

It probably hit me fairly hard because I watched them both back to back.

In the end, it's all the angle we look at it with, eh?

Now he's ruined it for me by gettin all self righeous on us. I can't help it I'll see MI for Ethan Hunt's crazy ass not Tom Cruise. Wasn't it South Park that showed Tom Cruise coming out of the closet? As in GAY. Homosexual, that is. Mimi Rogers, his first Jewish wife who got him into SciFientology complained he never wanted sex, at least not with her, at least not with women. I knew that nude shower scene in Taps was too damn gay.

And what's the name of that planet or star system, that L Ron Hubbard said populated the Earth, and killed their prisoners in volcanos, so their ghosts can haunt the un-clear human race - at least until they pay $200,000 for brainwash therapy from their cult? Sirius the Dog Star - are you serious? (G-o-d spelled backwards.) Or did they just copy the Aztecs From Outer Space, except without all that nasty cannibalism? Didn't the Jewish Freemasons From Outer Space also sell that Sirius scam? Isn't Tom Cruise Jewish?

Dianetics - wasn't ElRon's first wife named Diane?

And CIA and FBI agents run the senior management at SciFientology HQ, to help fleece the flock of suckers? Or gather intel around the world?

And how does fairey-boy Travolta own a fleet of jets parked at his house? That SciFientology sure pays good, for some reason. When it doesn't torture and kill you. Or is his wife such a great stripper with Tom Cruise that Travolta can retire? Show me tha money, honey, and you can take your clothes off for the whole damn world?

I knew Tom seemed too "natural" in the banned orgy scene in Eyes Wide Shut - like he's been there before...

Or could it be... THE ATTACK OF THE POD PEOPLE FROM OUTER SPACE?!

Reviews:

The information in each chapter was culled from court documents and interviews, and the fact that the Cult of Scientology was unable to legally supress its publication attests to its honesty and accuracy.

Here are a few weird factoids about the Cult:

1) The church paid Alexis, Hubbard's daughter, money to settle her claim to a share of Hubbard's estate. They failed to get her to sign a document stating her BROTHER was her father, not L. Ron.

2) High-ranking members of the chruch believe they are posessed by thousands of souls of dead aliens, called body thetans. These souls were implanted with false visions of reality by an evil intergalactic ruler named Xenu, 75 million years ago. This possession hinders mankind from achiving its true potential -- and only Scientology tech can exorcise these body thetans.

3) A raid by the FBI in 1977 uncovered information that the Chruch of Scientology had been raiding government offices and destroying documents related to the cult. This resulted in the criminal conviction of 11 high-ranking Scientologists, including Mary Sue Hubbard, Hubbard's wife.

Book text:

Surrounded by adoring teenyboppers, uniformed in mini-skirts, bikini tops and high-heeled boots, Hubbard was a bigamist who masterminded Watergate-style break-ins. He was an opium addict who secretly regarded himself as the successor to Aleister Crowley, self-proclaimed "Beast 666." These are but some of the facts about the man covered in this unusual biography.

Why this seeming obsession with abortion by Hubbard Sr?

RON JR.:

We were living in Bremerton, Washington. The year was 1940 and I was six years old.

I was in bed asleep when I was awakened by my mother's screams. I remember quietly making my way to my parents' bedroom. The door was slightly ajar and I peeked in.

Their room was dimly lit and I could see my father sitting on top of my mother. She was lying on the bed naked. I remember he was wearing a robe. He was doing something to her but, of course, I had no idea what.

I could see my mother wasn't resisting him, so, shaken and completely mystified, I went back to bed and tried to sleep. The next day I saw a blood-stained sheet in the garbage.

Years later I realized what he must have been doing that night.

When I got my courage up I mentioned it to my mother. She told me that, during the course of their marriage - they were now divorced - he had forced her to have two abortions.

How many attempted abortions were done I wouldn't want to guess.

Right there with ya. Tom Cruise has gotten to the point that I can no longer see him as anything BUT Tom Cruise. No matter who he's playing onscreen, no matter how good his acting might be (and it's not good, ever), all I can do is look and say, "Oh - it's Tom Cruise."

At which point, he's lost me ever wanting to see him in anything. I got suckered into "Eyes Wide Shut" because I love Kubrick's work, but that movie just plain sucked. Not even Nicolle Kidman running around naked could save that one - because every time SHE was naked, here came ol' Tom Cruise!

"It is the ultimate vampirism, the ultimate mindfuk, instead of going for blood, you're going for their soul. And you take drugs in order to reach that state where you can, quite literally, like a psychic hammer, break their soul, and pull the power through. He designed his Scientology Operating Thetan techniques to do the same thing. But, of course, it takes a couple of hundred hours of auditing and mega-thousands of dollars for the privilege of having your head turned into a glass Humpty Dumpty --shattered into a million pieces. It may sound like incredible gibberish, but it made my father a fortune. Also, you've got to realize that my father did not worship Satan. He thought he was Satan. He was one with Satan.
