If this article is as honest as a speech by one of the two favored choices for douchebag in a suit that sleeps in the white house, party up! 'Cause the microscopic black holes that have sunk to the earth's core to fester will be nipping at your toes on the dance floor by Friday night.

My advice.... take advantage of the Thursday night specials and then OD on Heroin Friday morning.

The radio play linked here was specifically written to coincide with today's event.

Me, I always look forward to global devastation. Beats worrying about my math test on Friday.

Keep eating meat, driving your car, buying your veg from walmart/asda/tesco* & flying to far away places and it'll happen. You just need belief.

Well, the scenario that concerns me primarily is detailed in a novel by Martin Caidin, titled Star Bright.

http://www.amazon.com/Star-Bright-Martin-Caidin/dp/0553126210

It's not very good, but unfortunately it's also quite plausible.

Remember, most scientific discovers don't start with "Eureka!" but more often "WTF?!"

And sometimes they ain't good.

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

It should be noted that the odds of creating a black hole with this collider are listed at something on the order of one trillion to one. And it it creates a black hole, it would be a quantum black hole, something theoretically possible, but also theoretically VERY unstable - as I understand it, they tend to wink in and out of existence very quickly.

It should also be noted that before the first hydrogen bomb was set off (thermonuclear device here, not the old atomic bomb), physicists calculated the odds at about 7 in 100 that the extreme heat generated in the plasma ball would actually ignite the nitrogen in Earth's atmosphere, resulting in a complete burn-off of our atmosphere.

And they went ahead and set if off anyway, just to show how bad-ass they were...

Somehow, I'm oddly not worried about a black hole.

Nah, I wouldn’t note that, because it’s not really true. The first hydrogen bomb was detonated in 1954. It was known as early as 1946 that a self-propagating atmospheric chain-reaction was not possible.

It's about Hawking Radiation. Stephen Hawking calculated that Blackholes would give off radiation at a temperature inversely proportional to the Blackholes mass. When you're getting down to Quantum scale blackholes, a single Quanta of Hawking Radiation would have nearly as much energy as the mass of Blackhole. The idea is that Quantum Blackholes would radiate their mass away pretty much instantaneously.
