I've actually had some decent beer in England, but had rather a lot of it, at a pub that looked so disreputable getting rolled was a sure bet, so I staggered outside and asked a local cabbie for a ride back to the hotel.

He blinks, stares at me for a long minute or so, and goes...
"You're a yank, aren't you?"

S'what I get for wandering around Whitechapel drunk, I guess.

Hey, my ancestry may be German, but I prefer my beers from the UK. Bass and Guinness, it doesn't get much better than that.

For American beer, I'll take some of the Sam Adams stuff, or some Abita TurboDog.

Sam Adams is generally my beer of choice, because it’s usually the most flavorful beer that I can get just about anywhere. Just about, there are still some places that only serve the Buds and Millers. But I’m of the mind that beers should drank as close to home as possible. That’s why when I drink in town, I’m partial to Olde Towne Amber, which is brewed right down the street.

As far as British/Irish beers go, the UK and Ireland are known for their Stouts and Porters. Guinness is the best known, and among the better beers. Samuel Smith is also a good one. All of them are an acquired taste if all you've been drinking are American Pilsners, but well worth it.

If you enjoy Guinness, try to track down a place with Murphy's Stout on tap. Out of a can or bottle, it's no great shakes, but on tap, it's smoother than Guinness and has a bit less bitterness to it. Amazing stuff, really. Drink four and crawl to a cab. :)

You know lager was invented to appeal to women. Because not many women really drank ale/beer. Personally i love a good ale. I'm even a member of CAMRA http://www.camra.org.uk/ (Campaign for Real Ale) who run a LocAle scheme.

I really really really like beer. (And that's beer not lager.)

Eurgh, Bass? I remember when I was in the states they had Bass on, and made a big thing about how it was imported. Try some Fullers if you can get it out there, London Pride is good (actually I had London Pride in a microbrew restaurant in Atlanta, but I don't know if it was Fuller's London Pride, or brewed under licence or what, it tasted pretty similar though).

Actually I happen to be pretty good buds with one of the equipment guys at the Michigan Brewing Company, and a lot of the better stuff I've had, at the time came in a plain bottle labelled "Batch 2247" or somesuch.

However, let's just say they don't hit a home run every time, good heavens... after he helped them dig up that citrus equipment some of the first lots were rather memorable in a different fashion.

Of course, they save the "unknown" lots for friends and crash dummies like me, anything they'd serve YOU for a taste-test is already pre-vetted so ya don't need to worry, but you really have to actually go there if you wish to try a non-established batch.

Top of the line is their High Seas India Pale Ale, a worthy adversary to anyone else's line, in my opinion.

One of my friends in the PD brews his own beer. He does several different kinds for football season.

They do tailgating down at Ohio State and have this elaborate setup with set menu plans (hot dogs one week, steaks, then ribs), and different beers (cold weather, hot weather, raining). Its like a military operation with training, logistics, deployment, positioning, etc.

One of the first posts I made here was about why the Alliance ship was called Dortmunder. I don't drink, so I had never heard of Dortmunder beer. And knowing how ships are often named after people, I wondered why the Alliance had a ship named after Donald Westlake's burglar.
