I came across this story about Hurricane Ike, and Texans response to it....

I know it might be corny, but this makes me damn proud. Instead of running, they are sticking it out. Putting their will against Mother Nature.

And, IF it becomes bad, I KNOW they will comport themselves in a good and honorable fashion. Not like thoses losers in New Orleans.

Well, thank you for the compliment, but it should be noted that we're most likely looking at a Cat 3 blow, not a Cat 5 like Nola got. And some of them thought they were being tough sticking it out, too.

I'm in Austin, and we're getting lots of evacuees here. My sister-in-law and niece are up from Corpus Christi, and I've got some friends down in Pasadena who are sticking it out. One of those friends just moved off Galveston Island's west end, and he's VERY glad he did - his house was the last one for miles (state wilderness area was his back yard), and the one closest to the water; he was literally less than 100 yards from the ocean. There's not much chance that house is gonna still be there come Monday, from the look of it.

Here in Austin, we're expecting 45-60mph winds sustained, and anywhere from 4-12" of rain. Which is what we generally call "Tuesday" around here. :) I'm on a hill, so I know I ain't gonna flood; I've survived 10" of rain in 4 hours, but they were evacuating the neighborhood one block down the hill toward Onion Creek.

It's clouding up right now, and it's getting breezy, so we're gonna batten down the hatches, wish our fellow Texans to the south of us good luck, and we'll be there to help when it all blows over. Hey, it's what we do... I've made more trips to and from Houston, Galveston, and Pasadena than I'd care to remember, barely beating the "traffic wave" out last time, just ahead of the people who spend 25 hours stuck on the freeway trying to get out of the way of Rita. It took me "only" 14 hours to drive the 180 miles from Houston to Austin that day - and I was one of the lucky ones! Cost me a cylinder head on my car, when I overheated it in traffic, blew the headgasket, and warped the head, but kept on driving anyway, figuring I had spare engines at home, but if I left the car to the hurricane, the entire car would be a write-off. I made it home, rebuilt the engine, swapped on a prepped head I had in the garage, and all was right with the world again.

And my buddy on the island was safely inland at another friend's house north of Pasadena, safe with his dog and his cat, and grateful for the help.

What else can you do but help when it's needed?

And said van is on it's way to the area just in case.

(could be mistaken here on the exact name)

When the National Guard arrested some fool in Corpus Christi out on the beach DURING the hurricane, with a freakin surfboard ?

That's the guy that married my ex.

I'm not so sure which act was crazier.

Um....that is the sort of thinking that allowed the Darwin Awards to be created.

I hope that they all come out well and I also hope they are prepared to take care of themselves because help will not be coming until well after the storm is gone.

I heard an interview with one of the beach patrol leaders on Galveston Island earlier today - they already have a 9-foot surge with the storm center still 100 miles offshore, and Galveston averages 7 feet above sea level.

Anyway, the guy said he came upon an elderly couple who said they were going to stick it out, and he handed them a Sharpie and asked if they'd at least do him a favor and write their Social Security numbers on their forearms, so authorities would have an easier time identifying their bodies later. At which point the couple decided it was time to get the hell off the island!

They aren't screwing around or taking chances with this storm. The authorities are telling people, point-blank, if you stay, you will die, and we will be unable to help.

My buddy Jim who used to live on the island stuck it out through one of the storms a few years back (a mere tropical storm, not a full-blown hurricane). He said by the time he realized he was fucked, there was no way out; he says he'll NEVER try to ride out a hurricane again.

So we're not ALL crazy down here. Well, at least when it comes to hurricanes, we're not. :)

Well, there's also thems that would like to get out, but do not have the means, and some of them always fall through the cracks.

Benny, our crazy pilot dude, will go on right on trying to get em out till the situation is untenable, and then come right back soon as it's over and try some more - usually it's elderly folks on a fixed income with no close relatives that care enough to bother, it's a damn sad occurance when career and social status are more important than family, innit ?

Back in Katrina, one old navy codger stuck in a retirement home that didn't get evac'd, got the idea to go onto the top floor and use the flashlight and blinds to signal for help.

Well, it worked - so in extremis, always try signalling, even if you see no one, they may see you.

Our little bitty boats are just aluminum 14's with trolling motors on them, so we can't do much while it's nasty, but after Katrina, several charity and religious folks chose to finance continued operations.

We'd like to get our hands on a largish pontoon boat with trailer in decent shape, that'd help a lot, but it's just gonna have to wait.
