I know this isn't the sort of thing one would usually post here, but I'm in a bit of a bind time wise, and I know this part of the forum is a bit more active. So please excuse the post in advance.

Recently I came into some money, enough to buy a new computer. The only problem is the dreaded beast called Windows Vista. As much as I would love to be able to buy something loaded with XP, there seems to be nothing of the sort and if I do want XP on my new computer, I'll have to shell out 200 bucks to get it.

So until I can scrape up the cash for XP, I'm trying to find out what I'll be getting into with Vista. I've only used it at my parents' house, so I only have a general idea of how it runs (badly, from what I've gathered).

What I'm looking to know here is, how does it treat software (specifically older types, mostly pre-2000), and how does it handle certain files (I'm thinking of my fan videos here; I know it plays avi, but beyond that, I'm not sure). I don't use my computer for really specific things, just music, my videos, and school stuff.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Vista is alright. I have it on my home box, but I am running a Quad Core Intel with 4 Gigs of RAM (suck it Vista!)

I have a lot of my daughter's video game uploaded and some are pre 2000 along with some of my older stuff. Vista does still have a compatibility section. Just Right click the Icon (when you are done installing it) with your mouse and select "properties". Next go to compatibility and select "run this program in compatibility mode for" and select XP (Best Windos OS next to 98 SE). But only do that if Vista is wonky with it. Test it out first to make sure because a lot of the updates for Vista have been (yes security issues but that is for all Microsoft products) have been for compatibility of programs.

Also check the Software Maker's website. THey might already have a Vista "patch" out for their products.

we have recently had some Server problems after installing a pc running Vista - our server is XP based and evidently compatibility.. not so much - actually the problem was more printer related, but still the hoops you have to jump through with Vista can be a headache..

for what it's worth - buy a Mac - great operating system

I've got Vista one my main machine, but that has 8 cores and more memory than you can shake a dismembered bill gates at.

My laptop runs Linux. Until recently it was Ubuntu, but I'm changing distros. PCLinuxOS has gash networking, KUbuntu wouldn't load and I'm not in the mood to piss about, and I'm about to give Mint Linux a try.

Vista isn't quite as bad from an end user perspective as they say. It's tried to rip off the Unix Root account idea, and done it so badly that it's essentially just an annoying bastard, the Networking is flaky as hell, but that's windows for you.

I with the get a Mac crowd. Linux is good for those that want to spend good chunks of time researching what to install for compatibility for which commercial product, but not really for the typical end user. But, all that gets tossed out the window (pun intended) as soon as wanting to run old software comes into play.

The new Macs are Intel, so you could either install Wine and run those windows programs that way, or use bootcamp and duel boot with windows for those dark days when you need to. Then you'd be able to slide gently into your new home, OSX.

Also, if you already have the monitor and a usb keyboard/mouse, then you really only need a Mac Mini.

But, all this is just a recommendation. I'm just saying that you should weigh *all* your options and not just default to what everyone else is doing. Especially, when you know it'll be painful. Especially, when many of the programs that you use are likely available on OSX as well.

Well, as much as I would like to get a Mac, as many of you suggested, it's a wee bit out of my budget. But I really do appreciate the help, guys. I'm thinking for the time being I'll stick with Vista, then once I have enough, grab XP and install it then.

I was about to say, if XP is going to be a push, Mac's are grossly over priced.

Actually, if you can get a copy of XP Home I have a bunch of licences I neither want nor need. I might be able to get a licence of XP professional from work.

If you get Vista, get at least 3 mg Ram and it'll run OK. The only problem I've had with it is my printer compatibility-solved it by getting a new printer, cheap.

For $ 300 you should be able to get someone to preload a CPU tower with Windows XP, DVD software and Microsoft Office .. then hook this up to an existing monitor and other hardware (no need to get a new moitor, etc if the stuff works) ...

There is this guy I know of in a neighboring town (near me) who does that for a living

Are you even aware of how nonsensical what you said really is? I mean seriously, you try to pigeon-hole me as a "Mac fanboy" because I find value beyond mere hardware?!?!

Not to mention: what about you. We've been here twice now on this topic and all you've done is "hated on" Apple. Whereas, I'll acknowledge Apple's flaws and poor decisions (I've actually complained about them in the past), all you've done is been the anti-Apple-fanboy i.e. fanboy in the opposite direction. Where's the balance to your arguments if there lacks such in mine?

Or do my arguments lack balance because I acknowledge value beyond hardware including the whole package? Get your head out of your ass. The computer is more than hardware. There is the OS and stability to consider. There is the user experience as a whole including the set-up of the machine itself up to the day to day operations. Not to mention that there are those of use that appreciate (and want) something on there desktops that looks better than some ugly loud hunk of metal. I for one really *really* appreciate that I don't need ear plugs to protect my hearing while I use my machine. If you think that all that shouldn't be considered, nor will enter into the price, then you're sorely mistaken.

Go play with your leaf-blower of a computer and let those of us that appreciate a different experience be.

I'm an Apple lover, so take my PC recs with a grain of salt. Look for XP. Do your best to find a copy of XP and use it. Vista is annoying. It hates networking. It doesn't much like drivers either. I've spent most of the time trying to get Vista to play nice with itself, let alone other things, and I'd consider myself somewhat tech savvy. Vista isn't evil. It's just, well, thorough. The simplest request will require you to give the computer a blood sample. Which is all well and good...the design needs a little work.

I hope you find XP. Good luck.

We have two vista machines in the house so I can talk a bit of trash.

Yep, I'm 'hating on' Macs because I refuse to accept they're the best computer for everyone ever made. I don't have a problem with you using a mac, as evidence by the fact that I've not once told you to switch. The only problem anyone is actually having here is you grasping that the Mac isn't the best thing for every person no matter what they're usage or requirements. Or, in other words you telling everyone that Macs are better in all circumstances and don't have any faults whatsoever. Perhaps you have once moaned about something you didn't like, but not here and not to me, so all I have is your word for it, far from acknowledging that Mac's have faults, all I've seen from you is the insistence that any fault with the Mac is debatable. I only see them as faults because I'm an "anti-Mac Fanboy", where as you, the intelligent clear thinker, know they're not really faults at all, Mr Balance indeed. I wish you'd listen to yourself.

Macs are more expensive, they're grossly over priced, sure that's my opinion, but since I'm the one writing this fucking post, that should be pretty bloody obvious. At any rate there's absolutely no denying that a Mac will cost you significantly more for more or less the same machine, albeit with a different 'experience'. If you find value in that, more power to you, but that doesn't mean they're not much more expensive than something else that will do the same job. Mac's are exactly the same as PC's now, they use identical hardware, the only 'hard' edge they may have is software, and I'm not sure that's much of an edge any longer. It all comes down to personal taste, you can get silent PCs, you can get stylised PCs, you can get stable Operating Systems (for all it's faults the one thing Vista is now is pretty Stable, but MS isn't the only developer of PC OSs). With Apples move to the x86 platform, Apples and PCs are now pretty harmogenous, the major difference is business plan, the 'soft' edge, Mac is far more in the line of closed software and architecture producing a highly centrally prepared experience, PCs are steadily moving to the opposite.

As for you're accusations of lack of balance, that's pretty laughable. Last time we went over this you played the part of the fanatical mac lover pretty well, going on about how everyone should have a mac, that for every PC there's a better mac. You're the one who lacks balance mate, I'm not a fan of Apple or their business strategy, it's true, but I at least acknowledge they have a place. If you really believe anything you just typed, you've not only been neglecting to read my posts, but you haven't read your own either.

Beyond that I really don't care enough to go on. I quite like you Sigma at the most of times, and have no real wish to get dragged into yet another vitriolic argument about who's computer could get the most chicks.

Bwahahaha

Once PC I ran for a long time, cause of the expense of components, especially drives and ram, I had to make do with six smaller drives I looted from other machines that were being tossed - chopped an old CD Rom controller card, rigged it to 1E8 IRQ11 and convinced Win95A that it was a tetiary IDE bus, so I had six IDE Hard Drives and a Creative proprietary CD-Rom, which all needed a monster power supply and extra cooling fan to make work....

Heaven help you when you lit the power switch.
*POP*
RRRRRRRR!
WHIINNNNEZZZZZZZZ
FWISSSHHH
VRRROOOOO

The oversize power supply and it's clobbered together mounts did indeed make quite a bit of racket, backed up by the atonal windup-whine of six different hard drives spinning up to speed and a CD-Rom that sounded a bit like a spitting cobra, topped by the whoosh of a passthrough cooling system run primarily by a fan originally intended as a booster fan for household heating ducts.

Leaf-blower was about right, for that one.

I stopped reading your post after your first paragraph because you are telling me I'm telling people things that I did not. Don't put words in my mouth, especially when they are so very far from reality. Especially, when I've actually said the exact opposite in (at least) several cases (including this very thread). It makes you look like an idiot.

"""
but not here and not to me
"""

Yes here, and yes to you. It was the last time we were in this conversation.

As I recall it was Apple's DRM which I admitted was horrible and was one of the reasons why I won't buy from iTunes (still the case). In fact, the only thing that I pointed out was that Apple was making moves to make that DRM go away. I cited that as a good thing, but you even bitched about that. It's that whole "screw Apple no matter what they do, even when it's good" attitude coming from you that I'm taking about.

Yes, I admit flaws. But, I also acknowledge when bad moves are corrected i.e. good things. Why is that bad again?

Point of fact, the description from the OP in this thread, a Mac would suit the purposes fine and with a great user experience to boot (a drastic difference from the Vista experience she knows she'd get). But, lets not let that get in the way of your tirade. God forbid someone would make a valid recommendation to someone which is that machine that you so venomously hate. Can't let that go unpunished can we.

At any rate, I've wasted enough time with your ranting and raving against valid recommendations. Go ahead and keep stomping about. You'll be doing it alone. But, I'd recommend that you don't. All this fuming can't be good for your health.

The wife just got one of those for work. Don't much have a take on 10.5 or the laptop itself as I've yet to be allowed to touch it and I have a G4 Mini (probably won't run 10.5 well as I'm quite minimum on those minimum requirements).

I'm glad you like it though. Just a curious question: Have you installed MacPorts?

But, that... wow. I can only imagine.

Yep, and in an unfinished basement with a concrete floor, cinder block walls and bare ceiling that occasionally dropped bits of insulation.

Of course, there were consolations, like the fact that I had a 19" color TV with two VGA monitors on either side as primary video, and the sound system on the junked console TV they were sitting on wired to the audio port, and a beat up over stuffed chair in front of it, allowing easy access to the CH products flight yoke pro, with throttle and dual hat, plus the pedals.

Did I mention that I played Descent/Descent II on this monstrosity ALL DAY LONG, as I was recovering from that near fatal accident ?

Racket and all, it was as close to VR as one could get those days....

PS. I think you are both overreacting just a wee lil bit, but yeah pot/kettle, I know.

You did say I'd be doing it alone and that you were finished with me. You're still here replying, so you lied. It's pretty obvious even if you're too stupid to get it ...

Hello,

I suppose this thread proves that we will all rabidly argue about anything.

Even, apparently Mac vs. PC.

I like it better when the guys in the Mac commercial do it.

And with this last one, I do believe that Citizen has successfully hung himself.

Not so much on my part. As in, I'm not the one chomping at the bit, so stark raving mad that I'm not able to read posts (e.g. I never wished him ill. Actually, quite the opposite.) Hell, I haven't even been replying to him for the last many posts. I've just been preserving his hanging himself. Very, big, difference.

At any rate, as said in my last post, I'm done with him, at least on this topic as I even grew tired of preserving his stomping about, etc never mind replying to it.

And with this one, Sigma has successfully shown himself to be a compulsive liar.

"I'm not replying to his posts, I'm just quoting his posts with snide remarks in reply"

You actually are a compulsive liar.

Yeah saying it is different to actually doing it. Again I only reply to your post to preserve yet more of your lies.

Though it's pretty hypocritical to say someone isn't reading your post, the same post within which you outright stated you didn't read mine...

Both of them, eh. I say I'm done with him (EDIT: Even not preserving his BS), he continues and I get the smack as well. Sure...

No kidding.

Well, there is good news. My brother's friend is a bit of a computer whiz, and he's agreed to not only install XP on my computer, he's also transferring all of my old files on to the new one. The universe has decided to be kind for once.

Thanks (again) to the many of you who offered advice, especially FMF and Frem. I really appreciate you guys offering to help. Let it never be said that all we do is argue in the RWE (well, maybe not Sigma and Citizen...).

Ya, because it's not like my first post here exists or anything. And lets ignore my second as well. While we're at it, lets ignore the fact that I did talk to several others in this thread in a non-augmentative way even when Citizen decided to have an audible snap i.e. don't put me in the same category as Citizen. He threw the first stone *twice* before I pointed out the inanity of it and it went from there because of *him*. He's the one who freaked out and continued to, not me.

I remember a RWD forum where people got dumped on or patted on the back depending on what they did. Now it seems as though the behaviour of people can take others down no matter what the other one(s) does. When did that change?

I'm different! It's ok when I do it! It's all Citizen's fault! Wahhhh! Wahhh!

You do realise that the more you try and portray yourself as the injured party who did nothing wrong and it's all my fault, the more of a childish fool you look I trust?

Whenever there's a stupid immature argument, there's the slightly more immature child who starts screaming about how it's not their fault and the other one made them do it. Guess which one of us that is...

Hey, least I'm man enough to admit I acted like a bit of a dick. I'll see you when you grow up enough to do the same .
