i'd like to respond to what Kirkules said... and amend my previous statement.. by the laws of the land, yes, Palin meets the qualifications to run for offfice - just as many people meet those qualifications. What i believe is this, she's just not the best possible candidate for the job.

I believe that Barrack Obama represents the best chance this country has to right itself and is the person who will put an end to the blunders of the previous administration. It seems to me that McCain and Palin simply want to continue the same bad policies of Bush/Cheney, and I don't know anyone who wants that.

I consider the REAL role of the VP in the last 20 years to be a simple one: Make the President assassination-proof. Color me jaded...

As much as some people hated Bush I, they couldn't stomach the idea of Quayle stepping into the job. Ditto Clinton/Gore (those who hated Clinton the most hated Gore even more, as evidenced by our very own right-wingers here in RWED) and Bush/Cheney. As a candidate now, you HAVE to choose a running mate who's WAAAAAAYYYY worse than you, in every possible way, just to secure your safety.

In that respect, Palin is VERY qualified for the job. Even the hardest-core liberals would be flocking to provide security for McCain, just to be sure that he'd live through his term of office!

It's probably no small part of why Obama chose Biden over Hillary, too - can't have folk running around thinking VP Hillary would be the better choice to run things, can we?

Conservative columnist Kathleen Parker, admitting that until recently she was a vocal supporter of Sarah Palin, now says the vice presidential nominee should bow out:

Palin Problem
She’s out of her league.

By Kathleen Parker

Quote:

Palin’s recent interviews with Charles Gibson, Sean Hannity, and now Katie Couric have all revealed an attractive, earnest, confident candidate. Who Is Clearly Out Of Her League.

No one hates saying that more than I do. Like so many women, I’ve been pulling for Palin, wishing her the best, hoping she will perform brilliantly. I’ve also noticed that I watch her interviews with the held breath of an anxious parent, my finger poised over the mute button in case it gets too painful. Unfortunately, it often does. My cringe reflex is exhausted.

Palin filibusters. She repeats words, filling space with deadwood. Cut the verbiage and there’s not much content there. Here’s but one example of many from her interview with Hannity: “Well, there is a danger in allowing some obsessive partisanship to get into the issue that we’re talking about today. And that’s something that John McCain, too, his track record, proving that he can work both sides of the aisle, he can surpass the partisanship that must be surpassed to deal with an issue like this.”

oh yeah.. i think it was a 2007 Beauty Pageant.....

During the Final Question round, Aimee Teegarden asked Miss South Carolina, Lauren Caitlin Upton, why she thought a fifth of Americans are unable to locate the United States on a world map. Upton's response was:

Quote:

"I personally believe that, U.S. Americans are unable to do so, because some… people out there in our nation that don’t have maps, and I believe that our education, like such as in South Africa and the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and I believe that they should… our education over here in the U.S., should help the U.S., er, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future.., for our children... I'm not sure exactly how to categorize your efforts to equate Obama's and Palin's experience...

Have you listened to the both of them talk on serious issues?

You may disagree with Obama on everything he says, as a matter of policy, but it would be hard for you to make a case that he hasn't studied the issues and come to a reasonable understanding of them so that he can actually talk about them without a script.

.....

On the other hand there is nothing to disagree with Palin on...she can't even really make a point. You must know, if you don't know conciously, you know in the dark recesses of your mind that this woman has no idea what she's talking about.

She's only had 3 interviews, and tons of deer in the headlight moments. There isn't one hint of substance in anything she says.

Tell me you don't really see understanding in her answers...

tell me that you don't just see what you need to see, that you aren't really going to lift her up on faith alone, and ignore the facts that she is showing you, not telling you.

Unfortunately, I think you're viewing it from the wrong angle. The hardcore right-wingers, the true NeoCons, don't CARE if she's "qualified" - they view her inexperience as a plus, because if she hasn't done anything, then she also hasn't done anything egregiously WRONG. It's not a matter of what you've done that qualifies you, but more a matter (in their eyes, mind you, not mine) of what you've done or haven't done that would DISQUALIFY you.

So you or your spouse are a secessionist? That's no biggie - it just shows your independence, and how little you trust Big Government®, and how committed you are to the NeoCon ideal of making government "small enough to drown it in your bathtub".

So you don't have any foreign policy experience? Who cares? That just proves that you love your country above all others, and that you're not beholden to any group of "furriners" - especially the French!

THAT is the mindset you have to view Sarah Palin from - the mindset that says being able to see Russia from your house is the same as having a foreign policy background.

Just thought I'd clarify that for you.

Mmmm,

I don't know,

I"m not talking about her experience...

because even people with experiences can learn the wrong lessons,

I'm talking about her inability to tell us her philosophy, or to even ensure us that she has a rudimentary, bookish understanding of the things she has no practical understanding of,

and I do agree that they don't seem to care, but I think for a lot of them the reason is that they have a side, they're going to vote for that side, because they believe in the side's philosophy...

or else, it is how adament they are about voting against democrats that is at the heart of it,

and I think the truth is they are willing, not to look at Palin as an excellent option for the Presidency, but to overlook her glaring faults, and vote her in anyway, inspite of her unreadiness,

in spite of the grave damage that could do to our country.

But if you are correct, I suppose they could come on here and say THAT is their reason for supporting her,

but I have a feeling that as I've heard it put, Palin is, or should be a 'gut' check for these people.

If they are going to consistently defend their intention to vote for the ticket of a 72 year old man with a history of cancer into the White House, with Palin as a possible succesor at any time to the Presidency,

then I'd like to hear them defend her with something more solid than "more experience than Obama."

the question isn't even about experience at this point, its about understanding of the issues, and whether they think she has demonstrated any kind of competence at all in those interviews, let alone Presidential competence.

Righteous, I'm right there with ya, but you have to remember that you're dealing with people who view George W. Bush as a GOOD President, and can see absolutely no areas in which he's been less than perfect. THAT is the kind of person you're trying to convince, and I'm quite sure that it's a lost cause.

And remember, these are the people who absolutely DON'T want their President to be the smartest guy (or gal) in the room, or even to have a layman's grasp of the real issues we face, because then they can fill that empty head with all of their own particular brand on nonsense.

Let me interpret my post for you since you were obviously not able to understand it without help. I have been one of few in these threads that has been intellectually honest about the candidates qualifications. If you think Obama's education and academic experience are better then Palin's, then I would agree with you. But don't tell me that Obama has more foreign policy or executive experience than Palin because that's just bullshit. Palin has more executive experience than all of the three men in the race combined. I tend to think that none of the candidates are as qualified as they should be. The only candidate that was running this time around that I do believe would have been qualified is Mitt Romney, but I did'nt support him because I don't like religious people in politics. OK, you think being a Community Organizer is more valuable experience to the job of President than being Governor of Alaska, that's fine, but that just your opinion. If you prefer the policies of Obama/Bidden over McCain/Palin that's great, just don't mix your ideology up with the facts, McCain/Palin have every bit as much experience as Obama/Bidden, you just give more weight to academic learning and I give more value to practical experience.

no, no, and fucking no, dude

That was not my point. You have possibly intentionally avoided it again.

Palin Managed to get herself elected to Governorship of Alaska---that should have given her some executive experience ----

cool

so what has she said so far in her interviews that convinces you of that? That convinces you that she knows a fucking thing about the office she is about to hold? That she can even fool some of the people some of the time? that she knows a thing about it?

This isn't about ideological differences...

this is about even knowing what your ideology is...about understanding any of these issues enough to talk about them in a way that doesn't sound like you are just trying to fake your way to the end of the interview.

I said many times that my posts were not about the experience equivolencies that you want to make, so please adress the question.

What about Palin's performance in her interviews gives you confidence in her ability to lead this nation?

I found it somewhat humorous that in the press release from the Palin campaign, they didn't even manage to spell Kissinger's name right, stating that she had met with "Kissenger".

Like I said Dumb (Obama), Dumber (McCain), and Dumber-er (Palin)...

Notice I did not include Biden on that list ?

Cause that fucker IS smart, both personally and politically, and has a pretty hefty resume when it comes right down to it, seriously, do the homework.

I think dumb, dumber and dumber-er are a bit light on actual qualifications myself, but never forget that the pres is as much a political position as an executive one, and as such I have utterly no tolerance for POLITICAL stupidity on behalf of those seeking that office.

And Palin totally offends on me on that level - when a journalist gently lobs you a goddamn softball, and you fumble, then drop it...

You got NO business in the fucking white house.

Mind you some people get into powerful positions, who are very educated, skilled .... and have displayed very questionable morals

Like say Madeleine Albright

from a sixty minutes interview:

> Leslie Stahl: "We have heard that a half million children have died (as a
> result of sanctions against Iraq). I mean, that is more children than died
> in Hiroshima. And, you know, is the price worth it?"
>
> Madeleine Albright: "I think this is a very hard choice, but the price, we
> think the price is worth it."

long as she is not paying it I guess

That's why we make them campaign, and debate, so we can shake em down and find out what they're really made of...

In theory.

It's become prettymuch a circus now, all staged and pre-directed, sure, but they do slip up here and there, and through those tiny little windows you get a glimpse of the real product they want you to endorse.

And being that the POTUS, is as I stated a highly political position, actual political finesse is in my opinion a downright requirement for the job.

And an applicant for that office demonstrating outright incompetence in one of it's most basic requirements is therefore not in any way qualified for it.

If Palin drops a gently lobbed softball so very damn badly, how would she do if McCain capped it and she found herself nose to nose with the hardball negotiators of foreign nations ?

Dumb (Obama) on the other hand, has Biden, who I would give good odds on in that confrontation, and can send him in his stead if he thinks it wise.

Having a competent right hand man (or woman!) is always a good idea in any field.

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

So is Palin qualified to be VP, and to step in as President should the need arise? Let's ask John McCain, who had this to say about two of his Republican rivals for the nomination about their qualifications:

Quote:

John McCain said:

I need no on-the-job training. I wasn't a mayor for a short period of time. I wasn't a governor for a short period of time.

That's what he said about the Mayor of New York, a city of over 8 million (more than 1000 times more than Wasilla), and the Governor of Massachusetts, a state with a population of 6.4 million (10 times the population of Alaska).

It should also be noted that Giuliani was mayor for longer than Palin was, and Romney was Governor for longer than Palin was.

So according to John McCain, his running mate isn't qualified for the job.

Gorramn , Signy !

How do you know my ex-XX ?

Empathy of a shark ? Check !

Looks good ? Check !

Sweetest person ever ? Not so much...

It's even more ironic that said ex-XX looks more like Tina Fey than Tina looks like Sarah Palin...

First time I saw Tina Fey I was smitten , 'cause she looked so much like 'my girl'...

Tina has the snarkier sense of humour...My ex has the 'sharkier' one...

Sarah Palin look(ed) like a couple or three of my dates from high school...
