The Palin/McCain team has suspended their campaign - and I'm just guessing here, but it was probably because Senator McCain's pants caught on fire. But, for whatever reason, (cough, grandstanding, cough), the announcement of the suspension made me wonder... given the chance, what would I suspend...

Other than the obvious - suspending my own pants with suspenders - i would like to suspend getting up at 5:30 am to go to a job to earn money with which i will pay taxes in order to ensure that the CEO of AIG can maintain his fleet of million dollar yachts..

anyone? play the suspend game - it's Fun!

Or, and this is a good one, how bout we suspend the normal lives of the folk who got us into this mess, and lock them all in the damn capitol building till they come up with a plan that us taxpayers approve of.

And just for kicks throw Michael Moore, Morton Downey Jr, Howard Stern, Don Imus, Keith Olbermann and Rush Limbaugh in there with em to berate them the whole while, I'd say get Hunter S Thompson to cover it, but alas he's capped it.
(although, Gonzo being Gonzo, he might dig himself out and cover it anyway.)

Several years ago, state attorneys general and others involved in consumer protection began to notice a marked increase in a range of predatory lending practices by mortgage lenders. Some were misrepresenting the terms of loans, making loans without regard to consumers' ability to repay, making loans with deceptive "teaser" rates that later ballooned astronomically, packing loans with undisclosed charges and fees, or even paying illegal kickbacks. These and other practices, we noticed, were having a devastating effect on home buyers. In addition, the widespread nature of these practices, if left unchecked, threatened our financial markets.

Even though predatory lending was becoming a national problem, the Bush administration looked the other way and did nothing to protect American homeowners. In fact, the government chose instead to align itself with the banks that were victimizing consumers.

Predatory lending was widely understood to present a looming national crisis. This threat was so clear that as New York attorney general, I joined with colleagues in the other 49 states in attempting to fill the void left by the federal government. Individually, and together, state attorneys general of both parties brought litigation or entered into settlements with many subprime lenders that were engaged in predatory lending practices. Several state legislatures, including New York's, enacted laws aimed at curbing such practices.

What did the Bush administration do in response? Did it reverse course and decide to take action to halt this burgeoning scourge? As Americans are now painfully aware, with hundreds of thousands of homeowners facing foreclosure and our markets reeling, the answer is a resounding no.

Not only did the Bush administration do nothing to protect consumers, it embarked on an aggressive and unprecedented campaign to prevent states from protecting their residents from the very problems to which the federal government was turning a blind eye.

Let me explain: The administration accomplished this feat through an obscure federal agency called the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC). The OCC has been in existence since the Civil War. Its mission is to ensure the fiscal soundness of national banks. For 140 years, the OCC examined the books of national banks to make sure they were balanced, an important but uncontroversial function. But a few years ago, for the first time in its history, the OCC was used as a tool against consumers.

In 2003, during the height of the predatory lending crisis, the OCC invoked a clause from the 1863 National Bank Act to issue formal opinions preempting all state predatory lending laws, thereby rendering them inoperative. The OCC also promulgated new rules that prevented states from enforcing any of their own consumer protection laws against national banks. The federal government's actions were so egregious and so unprecedented that all 50 state attorneys general, and all 50 state banking superintendents, actively fought the new rules.

But the unanimous opposition of the 50 states did not deter, or even slow, the Bush administration in its goal of protecting the banks. In fact, when my office opened an investigation of possible discrimination in mortgage lending by a number of banks, the OCC filed a federal lawsuit to stop the investigation.

Throughout our battles with the OCC and the banks, the mantra of the banks and their defenders was that efforts to curb predatory lending would deny access to credit to the very consumers the states were trying to protect. But the curbs we sought on predatory and unfair lending would have in no way jeopardized access to the legitimate credit market for appropriately priced loans. Instead, they would have stopped the scourge of predatory lending practices that have resulted in countless thousands of consumers losing their homes and put our economy in a precarious position.

When history tells the story of the subprime lending crisis and recounts its devastating effects on the lives of so many innocent homeowners, the Bush administration will not be judged favorably. The tale is still unfolding, but when the dust settles, it will be judged as a willing accomplice to the lenders who went to any lengths in their quest for profits. So willing, in fact, that it used the power of the federal government in an unprecedented assault on state legislatures, as well as on state attorneys general and anyone else on the side of consumers.

I suspect he's had this in mind for a few days and finally just told his advisors that he was going back to work. After all, the most serious financial crisis in at least thirty years and he, Barrack, and Joe are all off doing other things. That would not sit right with McCain.

Obama, on the other hand, is not suspending his campaign. If an international crisis isn't enough to get him off the beach, then a domestic crisis certainly isn't going to get him off the campaign trail. And if he insists on having the debate on Friday, either move the venue to Washington or else McCain should send Palin (which would answer the questions about her...one way or the other).

So I think you folks on the left should suspend your irrational false assumptions.

Obama has a point there, and while my facetious concept of locking them in the capitol building was pure humor - fact is, if you can't handle more than one serious problem at a time, you got no damn business bein president.

You do know McCain isn't even on any of the committees involved in this, at least as far as I know he ain't so feel free to correct that if I am mistaken - so that gives him one vote, and that's it, and as far as I understand he does not in fact have the economic background to argue from a position of strength on the topic.

And given how many other votes he's missed, it boggles the mind that suddenly he would consider this one important enough to drop everything and run home like a scared little kid afraid of a whuppin - cause in all truth that's exactly what it looks like to anyone with half a brain left.

This is a rout, pure and simple.

I hate to be all nuanced with facts, but I didn't see any promises or scheduling for those debates. Just an agreement in principle which never got off the ground due to issues from both sides. McCain OTOH is ducking out of an agreed-to, finalized and scheduled debate for dubious reasons. Because his help is just sooooooo needed on the committee ... oh, that's right, he's not a member.

"Oh, we're definitely going to be doing some town hall debates," the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee told ABC "World News" anchor Charlie Gibson.

Indicating he's not prepared to start debating McCain next week, as McCain's campaign had formally requested, Obama expressed interest in going head to head with the presumptive Republican presidential nominee as soon as his campaign fully pivots toward the general election.

"I look forward to, you know, having more than just the three traditional debates that we've seen in recent presidential contests," he said.

Obama did, however, caution that both campaigns would have to figure out the timing.

The Town Hall meetings were organized by the McCain campaign, and also by the same advisors who organized the Bush Town Hall meetings. The questions asked were all softballs for Bush and McCain. One reporter went through all the Town Hall footage, and who that was escapes me, sorry Hero, and found that only three tough questions out of hundreds of questions. That's why they're chickening out. If McCain looses the Foreign Policy debate just stick a fork in him. It's all downhill from there.

The European polls show Obama's numbers to be higher than thier own leaders. Obama having more credibility with Europeans will give him leverage with European Foreign Policy that McCain could never dream of having. The German fanaticism for Obama is religious! Europe was a great trip for him and that's when the McCain campaign pinged the brains of Republicans then downloaded new Schmidt/Rove instructions that thinking people have endured since.

The McCain campaign is also hiding Palin away too hoping that little Eliza Doolittle doesn't yell "move your bloomin' arse" during her next chance to embarress herself. Poor poor little girl.

Our huge crisis is being handled by the committee and the Fed, and the SEC, and others. NOT by McCain, Bush, and Obama. The three represent two Senate votes. The election won't go on without Obama and McCain. The crisis will and can be solved without them completely and in the same exact amount of time. McCain's presence is absolutely uneccessary in the crisis. In fact it's counterproductive, because Bush is sounding the whistle early this afternoon in Washington so all involved can take a field trip to the white house for a McCain serving photo op!...Jesus, Mary, and Joseph!

CNN just reported that McCain was "LAUGHING" after that photo op with Obama, because The Dictator ignored all questions by reporters, then kicked all reporters out of the White House.

The CNN reporter assumed McCain was laughing because "in 12 months he might get to ignore reporters in the White House".

Might wanna compare Obama's voting record over the last 6 months to McCain's, if you REALLY want to see whose job was "suspended". Look for the votes where McCain was actually THERE, and it'll narrow things down a bit for ya - cause he hasn't been there at all.

And what is it, exactly, that McCain is going to do by hustling off to DC right now? Which committee is he on that so desperately needs his guidance in this hour of crisis? What is he doing other than grandstanding and showing up for the photo op?

It's obvious that he's afraid to debate Obama, because he knows if the actual ISSUES come up - things like the economy, health care, bailouts for corporate fat-cats, golden parachutes for friends of the GOP... he knows he's going to get his ass kicked by Obama on those things.

And if he did it to delay or forestall the VP debate to help keep Palin from looking like the unqualified ditz that she is, he's even more of a chickenshit than I thought.

Too late - McCain's already won the foreign policy debate, by dint of the fact that Bush - and even Palin - are now following Obama's lead in foreign policy. Obama wanted more troops in Afghanistan, so Bush made it so; Obama wanted cross-border strikes into Pakistan on actionable intel, so Bush made it so; now even Palin has said that Obama's plans regarding Afghanistan are better than McCain's, when in her interview with Katie Couric, Palin stressed that we need more troops in Afghanistan, and we need them sooner rather than later - just as Obama has repeatedly said!

I think McCain should announce that he's to busy saving our financial system to debate Obama, but he will be happy to send Palin to debate Obama instead. Isn't that what a VP is for, doing the light duty work the President doesn't have time for. Once Palin soundly defeats Obama, maybe the Dems will get serious about this election and flip their ticket so McCain can debate someone in his own league.

I mean, the $15,000 per week that his campaign chief was being paid up until last week by the Freddie/Fannie lobbyists will certainly be a help, but I don't think that it's going to pay off the entire $700 billion.

Maybe he could let some of his formerly-rich friends bunk in some of his seven or so houses...

Still, I don't think it'll be quite enough to "save" our system.

This is all part of the diabolical McCain/Rove/Palin campaign strategy to reaquaint McCain with what he used to be, without loosing elements of what he became, that are important to evangelicals and hard righties, while transforming him into something completely unlike himself. So he can reform all Republicans in Washington to be unlike themselves, only still attractive to evangelicals, hard righties, and Republicans who are completely unlike themselves and reformed...While George Bush hijacks Obama's ideas, so if they work, people unlike Republicans can say they thought of it first. If they don't work, they can blame George Bush and Obama for having the same bad ideas...simple!

Poor poor Palin is undergoing a power seeking educational transformation so unlike the small town "honesty is the best policy" approach she is used to, that she risks turning into spindly hissing hobbit like power addict, and after an unfortunate demise, will eventualy live in caves as a pariah, running from villiage to villiage by night.
