LA NOW Prez on Palin: 'America, This is What a Feminist Looks Like'
October 06, 2008 11:45 AM

Shelly Mandell, the president of the Los Angeles chapter of the National Organization for Women introduced Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin over the weekend in California, speaking not on behalf of NOW but "as an individual, as a woman's rights activist for 30 years who has worked for all those years to see this day."

Going through her feminist bona fides -- the International Women's Year, the Equal Rights Amendment, Geraldine Ferraro -- Mandell said she is "proud to support Sarah Palin, a woman who will fight for women's rights ... a woman who will, Lord knows, shake things up."

"Make no mistake," Mandell said. "I'm a life-long Democrat ... I don't agree with Gov. Palin on several issues." And yet, she said, "I know Sarah Palin cares about women’s rights, she cares about equality, she cares about equal pay, and as Vice President she will fight for it. She cares about our children and she cares about women's lives. She's an athlete and she knows what Title Nine did for girls like her."

"It is an honor to call her sister," Mandell said as she handed the microphone over to Palin, who would accuse Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., of "palling around with terrorists."

“America," Mandell said, "this is what a feminist looks like."

I saw that on Greta last night. It didn't turn out to be what it was touted to be unfortunately.

First it was "NOW (LA) is supporting McCain"

Then it was "She is supporting McCain."

Then finally it was "she is introducing McCain."

I did like the great words she had for Sarah Palin though. Calling her a true feminist was very bold and gutsy.

She will pay a high price for her treachery against her fellow liberals. I cannot imagine why she set herself up for that type of future abuse.

If you saw the video , she was standing behind a podium which had a sign on it.... " Country First ". Very apt, as she's putting country first above party, above partisanship, above political ideology. This truly is a COUNTRY FIRST moment.

Well, as a long-time feminist I do NOT support Palin. Neither do most feminists, and for the life of me I can't imagine why this woman would. She certainly didn't explain herself. Maybe she's a corporo-feminist. Maybe she's like blacks who supported Clarence Thomas simply because he was black.

BTW- There's that one red spot on a canvas of blue that I was talking about in the other thread. You're clinging to it like it was a life jacket. One person's opinion doesn't mean much, no matter what her bona fides.

No, I think the sign on the front says it all. Country First. Or, in possibly in her case, she's seeing exactly what the NOW gang have 'claimed' they've always wanted, and that's to empower women to strive ever forward and upward in the American political system, and Sarah Palin is exactly that. Not like the hypocritical Feminist who were all for Bill Clinton, until he started doinking one of his young female interns, there by bringing to life ever disgusting stereo typpical male boss who ever hit on one of the gals in the office. Yeah, the Femanist sure stood by their principles on that one, huh?

Or blacks who are voting for Obama now, JUST BECAUSE HE'S BLACK ?

One of the things I never forgot from taking driving class in school, is that when you see one kid darting out into the road chasing a ball from behind a parked car, you can put money down that there's always another kid in the vicinity. And where there's 2 kids, there's a good chance there could be a 3rd.

Point being, there's never JUST one.

When an organisation reaches a certain size, it becomes a self-feeding organism regardless of it's original purpose, although it may still be guided by it.

I don't doubt that NOW has done a lot for women, any more than I would doubt the NRA has done a lot for second amendment rights - but the fanaticism and politics of such large organisations, often in the hands of fanatics who do not think things through, is the primary reason I generally do not support them.

A good case example of when an organisations size and self-interest overcoming their original purpose would be the AARP's support of a medicare drug plan that was ultimately detrimental to seniors.
http://www.yuricareport.com/Medicare/AARPsTreacheryExposedbyYurica.htm
l

When any national organisations self-interest overcomes it's own purpose, one should regard it with the proper level of skepticism.

That hearkens back to a lot of the economy of scale, paradigm, structure and monopoly discussions usually regarding corporations, but every bit as applicable here.

You mean LIBERAL people's interests I'm sure.

Just like NOW needs to be re-named " National Organization Of LIBERAL Women"

Or like The View needs to be changed to The LIBERAL View.

Or like the mainstream media needs to be called the mainstream LIBERAL media.

insofar as Palin is existentially forcing the culture issue to the forefront, even transcending regular politics. Don't know if she can win that many hearts & minds in the next 4 weeks, but I'm enjoying her efforts, no matter the result.

Well, what do you suppose is in the interests of "liberals" as opposed to "conservatives"?

It seems to me that most people want the same things: A secure job that pays enough for the necessities and just a few luxuries, a safe neighborhood to live in, good schools for the kids, freedom from intimidation, a sense of control over one's destiny, friends and family and the time to enjoy being with them, a chance to do something meaningful with whatever talents one has.

As far as I can tell, the only thing that liberals and conservative disagree on is not WHAT we want, but HOW best to get there.

Take just one issue out of the equation...abortion, and then tell my why NO women's group can support Palin?
If she isn't a Feminist, who is? A woman who has gone for the brass ring all her life....

State Champion BB player
Beauty Contestant
TV Weather girl
PTA President
Business Owner
Mayor
Governor
Mother

Are those NOT admirable things for women to strive for? Better for them to do what exactly?

Now put the abortion issue back in. It's all about abortion. One issue divides our entire society's view of a person's worth and value? And to draw any link to her position on abortion to anything that could potentially materialize on it is just absurd. PERHAPS SOMEDAY she could be President. PERHAPS SOMEDAY she could nominate a Supreme Court candidate IF a seat is available at the time, a candidate that would be scrutinized by the full Congress. MAYBE there MIGHT be a challenge to Roe v Wade SOMEDAY. So all these hysterics about her abortion position are all just hyped-up fear and bullshit too. She truly represents the model woman the Feminists have been holding up as a role model for generations, but now that the model is real in Sarah Palin, the so-called Feminists bury their heads deep inside their birth canals.

I would say her record on other women's issues would be a factor. In a state with one of the highest per-capita rates of domestic violence against women, and a Native population where 1 in 3 women are raped (generally by non-native men), Palin cut funding to women's shelters and charged the victims (or their insurance) for rape kits.

Not to mention, her running mate voted against equal pay for women.

I see those as being pretty big black marks on the women's issues scale, without even touching on roe v wade.

I don't know any of that to be totally factual, but I do appreciate your including them in the forum. It's easy to spin a person's vote on any bill that has multiple purposes. Saying McCain voted against equal pay for women somehow just doesn't ring true in a pure sense. When was there ever a vote in the Senate where the sole issue was equal pay for women?

When was their ever a vote where the sole issue was funding the troops, or sex ed? Yet the McCane-Plain campaign has insisted that Obama voted against funding the troops and for teaching 4-year-olds about sex.

As for Sarah Plain & Small's billing the rape victims for gathering evidence of their rape, that's 100% factual. It's been gone over repeatedly. She SAYS she didn't do it, but it's her signature on the budget that included it, and it's her appointee who instituted the practice.

Mikey, I have a longstanding issue with the ACLU over direct support of criminal conduct.

Part of that was that the victims in question, being by virtue of age subhuman and nonpersons, were not and are not, considered to have any rights in our law and society - however the idea of natural rights trumps that, and the ACLU doesn't exactly hold that viewpoint.

Big difference between protecting one's right to free speech, however awful, and throwing themselves in the path of the court when an outright crime has been committed is over the top.

If I told you how to build a bomb, posted instructions on how to wire it, and then advocated using it to blow up a police station and illustrated where to place it for maximum effect - and you went and did it, would I at that point not be somewhat responsible ?

The approach and grooming instructions used by Jaynes and Sicari were cribbed directly from the site, and one of em had a damn cliffs notes of it on his person when arrested.

One of those most vigorous in advocating that defense was one Charles Rust-Tierney, who got his own comeuppance later, thus exposing certain ulterior motives for that defense.

One should never give a free pass to any organisation, because in the end they are made up of people, all of whom are every bit as fallible and prone to corruption as anyone else.

I don't much care for the ACLU, useful that they may be... there's too much bloody history between me and them, and it's all bad blood, every drop of it.

And women who are voting for Palin are doing it JUST BECAUSE SHE'S A WOMAN.

Oddly, I don't think you'd have a problem with that. You seem very quick to denigrate the reasons blacks may have for voting for Obama, but utterly refuse to accept that there are those who will vote for McCain and Palin for their very own versions of those exact same reasons.

You also seem completely unable to accept the idea that maybe, just maybe, those who vote for Obama are indeed thinking of their country first, and see Obama as a better hope for the future than McCain, the glowering visage of Father Time himself, deeply stuck in the past and unable to come to grips with the present, much less deal with the challenges of the future.

Which is funny, because Obama claims he'll cut taxes for 95 % of the country, when most of them don't even PAY income taxes. How do you cut taxes on those who don't pay in the first place? Only in Dem world can you make such nonsense happen.

Ah, I see. So I'm clearly in the top five percent then, since I made less than $40,000 last year. Good to know I won't be impacted by this economic downturn. Man, I had no idea I was so rich!

Tell me, though - that $2164 I paid in taxes last year, for which I got a refund of a whopping $130... When can I expect the rest of my $2000 and change? I mean, since I don't actually pay taxes, I'd like to not loan the government that money.

AuRaptor, Fred Thompson would like to call you a liar:

Quote:

PolitiFact wrote:

Fred Thompson, in arguing that the tax cuts of the Bush administration should be renewed, said that 5 percent of Americans pay over half the income taxes in this country, and that 40 percent of Americans pay no income taxes at all.

Both figures are true.

The top 5 percent of all payers do pay more than half the income tax. They pay about 59.2 percent of all individual income tax, according to an analysis by the Tax Policy Center, a nonpartisan institute run jointly by the Urban Institute and the Brookings Institution.

Thompson also said that 40 percent of Americans pay no income tax. This claim is supported by the Tax Foundation, a nonpartisan tax research group that promotes transparency in the tax code and economic growth.

There's a small caveat to the 40 percent number — it includes nonfilers, typically taxpayers who don't have to file returns because their incomes are too low. It's logical to assume that most nonfilers don't pay income taxes, but it's possible that some did if they had income taxes withheld by an employer. This is probably a very small number, because people with low incomes have an economic incentive to file a return and get a refund.

The U.S. income tax system is progressive, which means that rates increase as income increases. Given that structure, it makes sense that people with higher incomes pay more taxes, and people with low incomes might pay no tax at all. Thompson's numbers are on the money, and we rate them True.

According to Thompson and the Tax Foundation, the bottom 95% of Americans pay over 40% of the income taxes collected.

Just because you'll claim you didn't know doesn't mean you're not a liar. And a fucking dumbass.

Who Pays Income Taxes?

For Tax Year 2006

Bottom 50%

<$31,987

2.99

Note: AGI is Adjusted Gross Income
Source: Internal Revenue Service

So..... the bottom 50% of taxpayers pay only 2.99% of all income taxes collected?

Huh.

http://www.house.gov/jec/news/2008/July/pr110-45.pdf

TOP ONE PERCENT OF TAX FILERS PAY HIGHEST SHARE IN DECADES
WASHINGTON, D.C.

– The share of total federal income taxes paid by the top 1 percent of tax filers increased to 39.89 percent in 2006, while the tax share of the top 5 percent climbed to 60.14 percent. The income tax share of the top half rose to 97.01 percent, according to recent Internal Revenue Service (IRS) data. The tax shares are the highest on record for these groups based on comparable IRS data going back to 1986.

Since 2002, the burden of tax payers has ever increasingly gone towards the top 1%. From 33.7% in '02, to 39.9% in '06..... the 'RICH ' have been paying more and more of their " fair share " .

In 2003, an estimated 29.5 % of tax filers, or almost 40 MILLION , paid no income taxes.

So, if Obama says he's going to lower taxes on 95% of Americans, when 30% of those who file don't even PAY taxes, that means he's going to be lowering taxes on negative Americans!!

He truly IS amazing!!

And no, kwicko, i'm no liar. For the 938th time of explaining to this to you, a liar knows the facts, and then intentionally tries to deceive. I knew there was a large # of Americans who didn't pay any income taxes, I just didn't know that exact number. Hyperbole aside, 40+ million not paying taxes and an ever increasing shift toward the top 1% paying more and more of the tax burden, it's clear Obama is full of shit when he claims he 'll CUT taxes to the degree he says.

Now OBAMA is the one lying.

No, I don't take anything you say as legitimate because you've been proven wrong time after time. If you say something "which doesn't ring true", it gets fact-checked. You're not "wrong by default" - you're wrong by the FACTS. That's what you claim to work with and cherish: Facts. Except when you don't have any, or you are caught outright lying because you're hard-wired to think that 95 percent of Americans pay absolutely no taxes.

If you're going to hold yourself up as the beacon of truth and all that is good and right about America, you really do need to have your facts straight before you start running your mouth. You got caught lying, and are trying to pass it off as "lack of sleep", but the plain and simple FACT of the matter is that you threw out a line of complete bullshit and got called on it and conclusively proven wrong. And even in light of all that, you still can't just nut up and say, "I fucked up. I blew it on that one. I was dead wrong." You pass it off as lack of sleep, or a typo, or being in a hurry. You try to pass the buck.

It's not "perceived ammo" that we "cling to" (and watch it there - you're treading dangerously close to insulting a group of people as "clinging to their perceived ammo", and you know that's not really an association you want any part of, right?). It's actual, demonstrable lies spewed by you and easily disproved.

Not entirely true. I don't believe anything you say, because you are full of shit, make up lies, and then hide when called out on them in most cases. Or, in this case, dance around it.

But I don't disregard everything someione on the other side of the idealogical line says. I disagree with a lot of what Hero says, but he often makes good points, as well. You, are just a shrill shill, so yes, I disregard anything YOU have to say.

And in this case - you were wrong. You made something up, and claimed it as a fact. And when it was pointed out that you were full of shit, you tried to sweep it away.
