The Republican National Committee spent about $150,000 on clothing, hair styling, makeup and other "campaign accessories" in September for the McCain campaign after Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin joined the ticket as his running mate.

How unusual is this, really? Don't they all wear ridiculously expensive clothes and hair styles? And make-up, come to think of it?

I'm no fan of hers, but somehow this doesn't strike me as terribly reproachable, unless it really is out of proportion compared to her peers.

It really is out of proportion. I mean...only $150,000? That seems low. Can't imagine Hillary or Obama being seen in public for less then a quarter million...and John Edwards...

I'm kind of glad we learned our lesson after Katherine Harris. If you find yourself under the national spotlight...for whatever reason...leave the makeup to the professionals.

Sure makes John Edwards' $400 haircut look downright cheap by comparison. Sarah Palin's hair and makeup bill alone was over $4500. That's a whole lotta makeup for one pig!

Who knows? Maybe Palin can get the oil industry to reimburse the RNC for all that money. After all, she DID get all her fellow Alaskans a big ol' socialist check from them, in a real effort to "spread the wealth"!

Well, that's a good point. So I looked it up
Quote:

Republican National Committee spent $150,000 to clothe and accessorize Palin since she was picked by McCain in late August. According to financial disclosure records, the bills include $75,063 at Neiman Marcus in Minneapolis and $49,426 at Saks Fifth Avenue in St. Louis and New York. The RNC also spent $4,716.49 on hair and makeup through September after reporting no such costs in August.

Politico also reported that its review of similar records for the campaign of Democrat Barack Obama and the Democratic National Committee turned up no similar spending.

My guess is that the Dem candidates buy their own?

Palin has received the equivalent of $2,500 in clothes per day from places such as Saks Fifth Avenue (where RNC expenditures totaled nearly $50,000) and Neiman Marcus (where the governor had a $75,000 spree).

Just 'cause you dress from K-Mart doesn't mean you have to wear pants with a dress.

On a side note - has anyone noticed how limp the poor baby is ? He's like a rag doll. I know poor muscle tone in one of the symptoms of Down's syndrome (though technically, it's not a syndrome anymore), and some children are more affected than others - and the kid looks not long for this world.

Making fun??? Heavens no!

How did it come across THAT way???

I have a DD who was brain-damaged at birth.

I know some peeps with Downs who were in my DD's classes. Some are more affected than others. I heard that it has to do with how much genetic material is copied (whole chromosome or only portions). But the kid looks really really limp, so I'm guessing he's one of the more affected ones. Poor kid, I just feel sorry for him.

Trig Palin was born April 18 - that makes him roughly 6 months old. After being born (roughly 87% die in utero) the first year of life is the most dangerous for a Down's syndrome baby. The chances of dying in the first year depend on how many cardiac or GI tract abnormalities the child had, with heart problems the biggest concern. After the first year, lifespan is determined by 'coping skills' - ability to feed themselves and walk. Sadly, Trig appears to be in the 'severely affected' group.

Sorry to take the thread off-topic. It's just that his severe limpness was something I noticed after the VP debate, and it shows up quite clearly in the photo. Some were looking at Palin's dress and pants - I first looked at Trig.

Strozzi was paid $13,200 by the McCain-Palin campaign last month alone, according to the campaign's latest financial disclosure report filed this week.

Well said.

I note for the record that Trig is likely being extremely well cared for. Probably has constant monitoring by Secret Service and a Doctor on-call.

I further note that its fracking cold in Alaska...so wearing pants with a dress is probably good sense.

This is the party that wants to portray Obama as "elitist" and "a snob"? Seriously? $150K in ONE FREAKING MONTH on nothing but clothes, shoes, hair, and makeup.

It's a good thing we're not in any kind of financial crisis right now, or this could come across very badly...

Couldn't she have just said "Thanks, but no thanks..." on that shopping spree to nowhere? Oh, yah, sure, you betcha!

I hope she really loves those clothes, because she's going to be wearing them for a LONG, LONG TIME once she gets her ass sent back to Alaska.

And for the $150K, couldn't they have bought a few more votes, or at least hired one or two campaign workers? Or paid a lobbyist for a day or two?

You don't seem to have a problem with double-standards when it's your guys doing it. How much bitching did the right do about Edwards' haircut? At least he actually paid the campaign back for that expense.

But really, I could care less about this. If that's how the RNC wants to spend their money, that's between them, and their contributors.

I'm much more interested in the news that Palin was useing taxpayer money to pay for her children's trips.

Where's the double standard? I thought the issue w/ MyLittlePony Edwards was his " 2 America's " b.s. that he was spouting. Clearly, he was living in 1, and pretending to care about the other one. Only later on, did we come to find out that MyLittlePony really WAS living in 2 America's . His and the one of his mistress!

Back on point, I'm also more concerned about the whole Palin brood traveling w/ Mama when there only seems to have been a legitimate case to be made for just her traveling. If she WANTS to bring the kiddies, fine, but she should do it on HER wallet. Folks out there sending $$ in to the GOP cause aren't doing so to have the PALIN FAMILY VACATION stay at 5 star suites while $$ for advertising dries up. That deserves an explanation, imo.

It might be worse than you think, too - apparently, several of those trips were paid for by the state of Alaska's taxpayers, not by the GOP - seems some of them were trips taken before she was picked for McCain's VP choice. One of the trips they mentioned in detail involved Palin going to New York City to attend a 5-hour conference. According to sources, she took her daughter Bristol with her on the taxpayers' dime, and stayed 5 days and 4 nights in a luxury hotel with Bristol, all for a 5-hour conference!

I heard a reasonable explanation about that house thing. You see, Cindy made John sign a pre-nup. Maybe John has one house (or maybe none), but Cindy has all the rest, and in her name only. Now which is more embarrassing to say:
1) I don't remember how many houses I have, or
2) I don't know how many my wife has, she didn't tell me.

Hmm, you don't see the double-standard where one politician is critisized over and over for an expensive haircut, and then the same people say it's no biggie when another politician spends more than most people make in a year on clothes?

Not terribly surprising.

But nice way to talk around the issue. You are very good at that.

The thing about Palin is, she's saved the state of Alaska far more than the 150,000 that the GOP paid for her clothes, so there's really no dobule standard here , what so ever.

MyLittlePony Edwards spoke of one world , yet lived in another. He never saved any tax payer's any $$. Sarah Palin did.

Not talking around the issue in the least. I just find it funny that the tiniest infraction, the smallest of nonsensical issues for Palin and it's blown up all over creation. Speaking of "socialism", tell me again what Sarah Palin did as Governor of Alaska when she extorted money from oil companies so that she could "spread the wealth" to her less-fortunate fellow Alaskans. How is that NOT "socialism" - she took profits from the rich and gave them away to the poor, who had done nothing to earn them! It's not only socialism, it's also [GASP!] WELFARE!!

Keep the Shiny side up

Sadly, this is in response to the double standard as applied to men and women candidates. A man can show up in his everyday business attire, even if it's off the rack at Men's Wearhouse, and no one says a thing. If a woman candidate shows up the least bit out of style, her clothing choice somehow takes on political overtones.

Sen. Clinton didn't have a problem with this, since she's got plenty of money to spend on couture, and is located close to the right stores and fashion houses. Gov. Palin isn't rich, and probably hasn't had much time to shop the sales at Saks, being in Alaska and all, so the RNC decided to spend less money than it takes to show one political ad on national TV to get her up to speed, wardrobe-wise.

Big deal.

You're barely scraping the surface of Obama's negatives.

Tony Rezko, conviced felon slum lord, gave Obama his first job, gave him money for a house. From Rezko, Obama moved on to Bill Ayers, where together they spent $ 60 million dollars NOT on education, but radical "education" ala Ayers type education.

So Obama's first 2 jobs were with the sleaziest, slimiest, and most vile contemptable figures around. Obama, a Harvard brain, was either TOO FUCKING STUPID to know about these men, or he was TOO FUCKING AMBITIOUS to give a shit about their nefarious backgrounds. Either way, it tells everyone with a clear mind that Obama has NO character, and is just an opportunist of the most despicable kind.

Then there's ACORN. Obama trained their field people in the community, he provided legal services for them, and to this day he and his campaign gave them $800,000 to continue their voter fraud activities.

Rev Wright, Rev Flaeger, and the big Kahuna of racist hatred himself Farrakhan have all been friends and mentors of little Barack, call me Barry, Obama. He walked in the milliion man march with Farrakhan. Isn't that special.

Boy that Obama is quite a guy! Team him up with San Francisco Values lady Nancy Pelosi, and one can clearly see the end of America in sight. I pity you young people who really don't know any better. You've been swept up in a frenzy of Bush/Cheney hatred, but you know not what you are about to do to your own futures. " I came into Egypt a Pharoah who did not know." Very sad indeed.

So, if they all spend that kind of money on clothes & stuff, it's okay? That's sick. What was spent on one person's clothes would feed & house 3 families for a year.
Anyone that throws money around like that while pretending to feel our pain is reprehensible IMHO.

Oh the horror!....It's reprehensible!... They actually paid for some of her meals too! You people are hopelessly pathetic, and I'm LAUGHING MY ASS off over your endlessly entertaining hysterics. By the way, what about the $ 150 MILLION DOLLARS Obama is spending just this month on his deceitful ads against McCain? No problem there I'm sure, right? $ 150 million could have bought some of those drunks and drug addicts that ACORN registers a few Big Macs dontcha think?

First, the ads are no more deceitful than McCains, second, it's money he raised specifically FOR that purpose, third, it's not for a gorram weekend wardrobe....

When peeps like you fail to be impressed one way or the other by ads from candidates, maybe stupid money will cease to be thrown at them...y'think?

The RNC has stated the clothes will be auctioned off for charity after the election; a little detail the dirty lying Dems conspicuously omit.

On the defensive over the extent of multiple McCain homes, the GOP candidate strikes back. But his TV spot gives an oversimplified and misleading account of how Obama bought his own $1.6 million house in Chicago.

The ad says Chicago power broker Tony Rezko got "political favors" including "$14 million from taxpayers." But there's no evidence of any connection to the Obama home purchase. The $14 million was to build apartments for low-income seniors. Obama wrote a letter supporting the "worthy" project, but both men say Rezko didn't ask for the letter.

It says Rezko "purchased part of the property [Obama] couldn't afford." Rezko's wife did buy an adjoining tract but later sold the land at a profit. Obama paid market price for his home.

McCain launched the attack after Obama ran one capitalizing on McCain's inability to recall for an interviewer how many homes the McCains own. Obama's ad says it's seven. The best tally we've seen puts the figure at eight, counting all the apartments and homes owned by McCain's wife, Cindy, and various family trusts, for themselves and their children.
