Yes, they were so terrible they threw out a corrupt dictator (Somoza), increased literacy from 50% to 87%, set up rural medical clinics, lowered the infant mortality rate, eliminated polio, and distributed land to small farmers. (Those dastardly socialists increased private ownership!) Sheesh! How dare they do all that bad stuff???? ---------------------------------

Everytime the woman opens her mouth, some new idiocy seems to spew forth, while at the same time, interesting little tidbits like her clothes budget crop up. I'm about this close (*holds fingers slightly apart*) to just saying "fuck it" and giving up on democracy altogether. Every single election we choose between some douchebag and a moron to lead the country. I don't think I've seen a single election where one of the candidates seemed capable of handling the job effectively and responsibly. *sigh* [/rant]

That's sick. What was spent on one person's clothes would feed & house 3 families for a year. Anyone that throws money around like that while pretending to feel our pain is reprehensible IMHO. Quote:Originally posted by Odessa762: Here's the thing I don't get about raising taxes on folks that earn over 250K...how does raising taxes on my boss (Big Bucks!) make things better for the nation? If the gov takes more of his money, he is going to look for way to get that money back somehow - he is used to getting $XXXXXX every month from his business. If his taxes go up, he will just give himself a raise to compensate for the increased taxes. That money has to come from someplace. If his business earnings stay the same, he has to cut business cost's someplace, right? I know he would resist cutting staff, but he would cut other expenses around the shop. He might alter our 401k plan, or our health benefits. Hell, today I asked for cash to replace some flourescent light bulbs that are out. I got turned down! ("Let's see how business is on Friday"). If cutting back on little things like that don't get him back to where he was pre-tax increase, he will - reluctantly - start to cut staff. Seems to me that that scenario would put a strain on the gov ... if more folks lose their jobs or even if they just have their benefits cut. I am no economist, so I don't know if I am missing something here, but raising taxes on the nation's job creators isn't really making sense to me. I don't have much faith in a government run health care system, either. I have first hand experience with gov-run medical programs (Carter & Reagan VA) ... not attractive.
